I have never understood the love for '06. That's the one version I ditched in the third year of dynasty mode and never returned. That was a Madden year for me. I quit playing after a dynasty mode game in which the CPU chucked a bomb for a TD on third-and-long in the final minute of a game it was winning by a large margin. It seemed like it was impossible to stop the deep ball. I believe that was the version in which, as a user, kick or punt returns were so laughably easy that I had to come up with a way to limit my returns.
After recently playing through a bunch of them with 2015 rosters, I think 06 and 07 are my two favs of the PS2 generation. I also don't mind 09 either.

06's biggest issue is definitely the easier long ball, but sliders can help a little bit.

It's too bad all of these games have flaws in one form or another.

One just needs to decide which flaws they can tolerate the most.

The momentum meter killed the PS2 versions for me. I went with 06, although it had deep ball issues (too easy to complete), it was probably the most balanced, fun game. If I recall, it took a pretty big graphical leap that year as well.

I like 05 too. The only issues I have with it is twofold:
  1. Too easy, but that is different for everybody I guess.
  2. There is a dynasty glitch where you see too many non-Power 5 teams haul in great recruiting classes. Several end up with top 25 classes
Other than that the game is good. I never saw the dropped pass glitch but I guess that was an XBOX issue.

The best thing about 05 is that you don't see crazy high scoring games all time. The game plays a lot slower than its future counterparts. If you like that slower play than 05 is the game for you. If you keep getting constant low scoring games then the best way to remedy that is too just increase the quarter length.

I need to play 05 more though. The dynasty glitch I mentioned is my biggest reason for not playing it more since I am a dynasty guy.

Nice site, Vol. I've recently jumped back into these older PS2 versions and your site is helpful.

Another thing that gets lost is the rating scale... I think it was better in the older games. Seems in the newer games there are so many 90+ ovrs on teams after a few years. Not the case in the old games.

A bad team was lucky to have one guy over 80+ ovr in NCAA 2004.
