don't you have to go through the draft before you're considered an nfl free agent? most people in the arena leagues go undrafted in the nfl, that's why they sign as free agents. in mcpherson's case, he hasn't been in the draft, so he's not a free agent. then again, i guess i could be wrong.

McPherson couldn't play Ncaa football because when you play any professional level( if you even try out) you are forced to sign a waiver that shows you participated in workouts at the pro level. I know this because I had to fill out a couple....
