Custom Formations

Has anyone used a custom formation and does it work in gameplay?

I designed my own formation that I think looks great on paper and my team has lost two games in two years, but when I play, it seems like it's much harder to get any attacks going with it than I can with the defaults.

Maybe you're just not used to it yet? Or perhaps there are small details you still need to fill in like work rates, how much ground you want the players to cover, the tactics, etc
