I wouldn't mind it (Madden = bullet/lob comes to mind) so long as it's super responsive.

Ughhh... I knew the madden thing would come up. In a laggy game during really competitive gameplay this is one of the most frustrating things.

Not only is the online delay going to play a huge part but input lag from old tv/new tv's and how responsive the mechanic really is will be such a determing factor for success.

Fighting games are fast twitch reflexes and football is slow and methodical.

NO THANKS!

I don't see how lag would effect a 500ms button press differently than a less than 100ms button press.

As someone who plays every sports title competitively I've seen enough of this scenario to not like it. I want certainty when I push a button that I'm doing the input I want and not me trying to judge how hard or soft I push something and having the wrong outcome.

This type of mechanic would have me thinking if I pushed the punch button hard enough or how soft do I have to be. Then add lag from people around the world and it could be a big headache.

I would also bet money that more ppl play this game all around the world then they do madden. So take that how you may. UFC 2 at times can be really laggy playing ppl from Brazil, Russia etc...

Good point, Cee. I'm pretty much an offline gamer so I honestly never think of online with some of this stuff.

Re: would having strikes mapped to long presses on buttons help?

Length of a button press is less than ideal.

It introduces latency on both the long and short hold buttons because you have to wait until the button is released, or a timer is hit.

Without the long hold input, you can start the animation as soon as the button is pressed down.

Makes a big difference in terms of responsiveness.

The only exception is if the animation can branch from one option to the other.

Then you can start the generic animation, and branch once you've had time to determine which input was made. But that's obviously very limiting.
