Defend pass goes for the ball if he is in position to try and take a snab at it. Swat just swats the ball away, no chance at an INT. It is a risk/reward move. If you defend, your player might go for an INT and get burned for the big play, while if you just swat, the big play happens very rarely.

And by pressing the "Y" the computer decides whether to swat or try for the pick.

I find that whenever I use the Y button, it usually takes me out of the play and I give up big yards. However its really hard to switch to a receiver using the B button and then immediately hit the white button to deflect the pass. It's a double-edged sword.

Yep..but it is sweet because it forces you to decide what to do? Swat or go for pick....Lots of fun

It's best to see where the QB is throwing, then press the "B" button, immediately after he throws it. The "B" is supposed to give you control of the best player to make a play and chances are it will be the guy defending the ball (although not always). By immediately pressing the "B" after the QB's release you will have more time to react with a knockdown or try for the pick press and by seeing where the QB is throwing the ball you can focus in that direction.
