The base plays I like to stick with out of the 4-3, nickel, and dime are cover 2 man or cover 2 hard. The players that are going to contain the run if it is broken to the outside are your outside linebackers and the safeties. On the long gainers that i've given up, most of the time it happens when I gamble and blitz the linebackers or the safeties. If they don't hit the back as he cuts it outside at the line of scrimmage, there's usually nobody left out there to run him down.
