Re: Hail State! A Mississippi State Story (CFB 25)

Tennessee defeats Mississippi State 38-24
Saturday, November 9 3:30
SEC Network

Mississippi State headed to Neyland stadium to take on the struggling 2-6 Tennessee Volunteers. On the first drive, Nico Iamaleava would lead the Vols down the field and Dylan Sampson would score on a 10 yard rush. Mississippi State would respond with a solid drive highlighted by a 38 yard catch and run by Coby McCollum. But they would have to settle for 3 as Nick Barr-Mira would drill a 42 yarder. Both offenses would stall out the next few drives. Tennessee’s Josh Turbyville would nail a 35 yarder at the beginning of the 2nd to make it 10-3. Mississippi State would be in plus territory when Blake Shapen would throw an ill advised pick. The very next play, Nico would connect with Tulane transfer Chris Brazzell II on a 77 yard catch and run over the middle. Tennessee’s DL would bully Shapen and would block a punt recovered by Kaleb Perry to make it 24-3. Shapen would lead the Bulldogs down the field and he would hit TE Seydou Traore on a 12 yard pass to cut the lead to 24-10 with 1:05. Shapen would be injured on the play and not return to the game. Meanwhile, Nico only needed 42 seconds to lead Tennessee down the field and give them a 31-10 lead at half.

The second half would start off sleepy. But Nico would throw a pass over the middle intended for Bru McCoy. It would be broken up but fall into the hands of a diving Donte Thornton for 27 yards. This seemed to be a symbol for how the game was going. Dylan Sampson would cap off the impressive drive with a 1 yard TD. On the ensuing drive, Chris Parson would launch a bomb to Jordan Mosley who split the safeties on a deep post for a 73 yard score. Mississippi State would get a stop and Chris Parson would leave a 14 play drive which included 2 4 down conversions. One of which was a Keyvone Lee 2 yard run to cut the lead to 38-24. Tennessee would run the clock out on their next drive to secure their first SEC win of the year.

Although it’s disappointing to lose, it was clear Mississippi State had no answer for Tennessee’s DL and offensive playmakers. They fought hard in the second half, and turned in a respectable performance. Freshman QB Chris Parson impressed and Bulldog fans got a early look at next year's potential starter. Coach Holden didn’t have an update on Blake Shapen’s status after the game. Mississippi State drops to 5-5 and has 2 chances against Mizzou and Ole Miss to get bowl eligibility.

tough loss to the Vols, but we knew you'd be taking some lumps year one. The recruiting class is shaping up nicely though, the future looks bright!

To be honest with you I thought there'd be more games when we would just get torched by a team with a superior passing attack. I really like this class too, need to finish strong but the core of this class is very impressive

Re: Hail State! A Mississippi State Story (CFB 25)

Bulldogs muck past #15 Mizzou 15-13 on Senior Day
Saturday, November 23 3:30
SEC Network

It’s a rainy day in Starkvegas for the Bulldogs Senior Day. Mississippi State would get the ball first and put together a 14 play drive milking half of the first quarter clock. Davon Booth would fumble but luckily the Bulldog would pounce on it. They would face 4th and goal from 3 and Coach Holden would decide to be conservative and send out Nick Barr-Mira for a 20 yard FG. There wasn’t much action until early in the 2nd, Mizzou would put together a decent drive and Blake Craig would tie the game on a 36 yard field goal. Mississippi State would go 12 plays including a nice 19 yard catch and run on a 2nd and 18 by Kelly Akhayari. Shapen would hit Creed Whittemore from 12 yards out to give Mississippi State a 10-3 lead. Mizzou would go 3 and out and Whittemore would have a nice return to the Mizzou 40. Mississippi State would once again stall from inside the 5 but Barr-Mira would hit a 21 yarder to give the Bulldogs a 13-3 lead with 21 seconds remaining.

The Mississippi State pass rush would take over in the 2nd half. John Lewis would deck Brady Cook to force a 3rd and long from Mizzou’s own 8. Then Kedrick Bingley-Jones would get through and drop Cook for a safety. Mississippi State would start to drive, Shapen would see Kevin Coleman beat CB Toriano Pride on the release but a miscommunication on a choice route would result in an easy interception. Mississippi State would hold strong on defense and force Blake Craig to boot a 52 yard field goal. Neither team would do much, it was a slugfest. Kelly Akharaiyi would catch a 41 yard bomb but that was nullified by a Blake Shapen interception in the red zone early in the 4th with Mississippi State up 15-6 with a chance to seal the game. Mizzou would have one last chance to get back into the game. On 4th and 15 from the 44, Cook would hit Brett Norfleet on a 25 yard desperation pass to keep the drive going. Facing 4th and 6 from the 9, Coach Drinkwitz would decide to send Craig out. He would bank it off the post. Mississippi State didn’t move the ball much but by then it was too late. Cook would hit Burden on a 40 yard TD pass with 1:07 left but with 1 timeout left, they’d fail to recover the onside ending the game.

It was an ugly win for Mississippi State but they have become bowl eligible in Ty Holden’s first year. “I’m thrilled for these guys. The Seniors that have fought through some tough years, glad we got it done.”

Nick Barr-Mira Walk Off FG Sinks Rebels 24-21
Saturday November 30, 7:30 PM
ESPN2

Mississippi State would head to Oxford, Mississippi to play their heated rival in the Egg Bowl. #14 Ole Miss is teetering on the edge of a playoff berth and this game would provide an opportunity for the Bulldogs to play spoiler. Ole Miss would start with the ball, get a few first downs but Senior Safety Corey Ellington would pick off a pass and take it back 57 yards to the end zone. The Defense would be strong in the first quarter with John Lewis making some plays against the run and recording a sack. Mississippi State would have a 45 yard drive early in the second. Blake Shapen would get hit on 2nd and 2 from the 29 and lose the ball but Mississippi State would retain possession. They would trot out Nick Barr-Mira to attempt a 54 yard field goal. It came up just short. Ole Miss would respond, Jaxson Dart would connect with star slot WR Jordan Watkins from 17 to tie the game with 2:26 left. Mississippi State would most of the 2nd quarter on an 11 play 81 yard drive highlighted by some nice throws by Blake Shapen. Jeffrey Pittman would punch it in from 3 with 17 seconds remaining.

Mississippi State would start with the ball, Blake Shapen would be under siege and the Bulldogs would have to punt. Zachary Haynes would kick it somewhat short to Jordan Watkins who would house it from 53 yards to tie the game. The rest of the 3rd quarter was slow. The rain started to come down and both pass rushes were fierce. Early in the 4th Mississippi State would punt the ball to Ole Miss again facing a 4th and 3 from the 50. Ulysses Watkins IV would get a nice run picking up a first down, he would be wrapped up by Hunter Washington and Brice Pollock would punch the ball out. Washington would recover and Mississippi State would take over at the 36. They would trot out Nick Barr-Mira out for a 31 yard try to take the lead. He would miss the kick but Ole Miss would run into him giving the Bulldogs a first down. Davon Booth would score from 6 yards on the next play to give them the lead. Ole Miss would face a 4th and 2 from their own 40 and decide to punt with 3 timeouts and the 2 minute warning on their side. They would get a quick stop and get the ball back. Dart would launch a deep ball to the speedy Tre Harris to tie the game. Shapen would throw 2 incomplete passes to start the ensuing drive. On 3rd and 10, Shapen would throw a deep pass to Kelly Akharaiyi who had a few steps on the CB. Akharaiyi would make a tremendous leaping catch with the safety Saunders right in his face. Ole Miss had no timeouts so Mississippi State wanted to set up Barr-Mira for the game winning field goal. Akharaiyi would take a jet sweep for 4, Keyvone Lee would have runs of 12 and 6 to set up Barr-Mira for a 20 yard try. He would put it through the uprights stunning the Rebels at home!

“I’m gonna give 5 guys the game balls this week. Corey you set the tone with the pick 6. You took the energy out of the crowd early. Bryce and Hunter, hell of a play on the ballcarrier giving us a short field. Kelly, that was one of the best catches I’ve ever seen. And Nick, way to shake off the pressure and deliver us the W. Those guys were way too cocky. We played with composure and poise, HELL OF A GAME BOYS, Let’s go bowling!”
