Dahntahn Dynasty (Steelers Franchise, Madden 12)

Last year was a rollercoaster ride for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

They lost their QB for four weeks due to sexual assault accusations, followed by two backup QBs going down with injuries...only to win 3-1 during Ben Roethlisberger's absence. They gave away Superbowl MVP Santonio Holmes for records and soda pop...only to use those trifles to draft promising new wide receivers. They drafted a much-needed top-quality center in Maurkice Pouncey...then lost him to an injury just before the playoffs.

And, of course, they made it to the Superbowl...only to have the Green Bay Packers make a mockery of the Steelers' pass protection.

Will this year be as...rollercoastery?

THINGS TO WATCH:

1) The Secondary. The Superbowl loss can be summed up in one word: Secondary. Although Troy Polamalu is usually a superstar, he was fighting an injury...while the cornerbacks continued to be average, at best. Is Polamalu back at 100%? And what of the cornerbacks? With Ike Taylor re-signed and Curtis Brown and Cortez Allen drafted in the third and fourth rounds respectively, it's time for CBs Crezdon Butler and Keenan Lewis to put up or go home.

2) The O-Line. Only one starter at the beginning of the season last year played in the Superbowl. Last year was a constant carousel of injuries. Will the O-Line receive a significant upgrade?

3) Contracts. After locking in Lamarr Woodley, Lawrence Timmons, and Ike Taylor, the Steelers announced there will be no more deals done until the offseason. Notably, this leaves superstars Troy Polamalu and Mike Wallace heading into the final years of their contracts with no negotiations occuring. Will the Steelers really let these two key figures go? Or can they somehow be brought back in under the Salary Cap?

4) Behavioral Issues. Last year, QB Ben Roethlisberger faced a second charge of sexual assault in as many years. He has since married and seems to have turned his life around...but he has become the exception rather than the rule. During the off season, HB Rashard Mendenhall suggested the 9/11 terrorist attacks were an inside job, and said that playing in the NFL is comparable to being a slave. Meanwhile, OLB James Harrison had an interview with GQ Magazine in which he posed with firearms, called out Roethlisberger for underperforming in the Superbowl, called Mendenhall a "Fumble Machine", and referred to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell with a homophobic slur. Even the much beloved WR Hines Ward was accused of drunk driving. Will the Steelers off-field behavior affect their on-field play? Will it affect the fans support?

Steelers Announce Final Cuts, Prepare for Season Opener In Baltimore

The Steelers announced the final cuts of the preseason this morning, stating that defensive tackles Steve McClendon and Tyri Watson, along with offensive lineman Tony Hills, were released from the team effective immediately.

The Steelers also announced that Offensive Lineman Ramon Foster was placed on injured reserve due to a torn tricep.

These two announcements bring the Steelers to a full roster in time for the season opener on September 11, 2011 at rival Baltimore Ravens.

The Steelers previously announced the following cuts during the preseason:

Week 1: K Swayze Waters, P Jeremy Kapinos, FB Jamie McCoy, ILB Morty Ivy.

Week 2: MLB Stevenson Sylvester, HB James Johnson, OLB Baraka Atkins, and CB Crezdon Butler.

Week 3: CB Keenan Lewis, HB Jonathan Dwyer, OL Chris Scott, DL Jack Ruth, FS Mykkele Everett, OL Ethan Saunders, WR Clinton Barnes, and FS Da'mon Cromartie.

Steelers Sign Two Offensive Linemen

The Steelers announced today that they have cut TE John Gilmore and OLB Chris Ellis to make room on the roster for depth on the O-Line. The Steelers have signed Jon Stinchcomb and Leonard Davis to one year contracts.

Stinchcomb, 31, was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in 2003. He served as a backup for two years before sitting out all of 2005 with a knee injury. In 2006, he won the starting job as right tackle. He started 80 consecutive games, was named the Saints Man of the Year in 2008, and was in the Pro-Bowl AND the Superbowl in 2009. He was less effective last year due to playing through an injury, and became a free agent on August 15th of this year.

Davis, 32, was drafted second overall by the Arizona Cardinals in 2001. He joined the Dallas Cowboys in 2004, and played in the 2007 pro-bowl. He has started as both a tackle and a guard. He plays bass, has 21 half-brothers and half-sisters, and is the fifth-most penalized player in the NFL

Both Davis and Stinchcomb are believed to be competing for starting positions.

Pouncey and Farrior Ruled Out For Season Opener

Starting center Maurkice Pouncey and starting ILB James Farrior have been ruled out for the season opener on September 11th against the Baltimore Ravens.

Both players were injured during the final pre-season game against the North Carolina Panthers.

Pouncey, 22, dislocated his elbow. He is expected to be out for 3-4 weeks.

Farrior, 36, was listed as questionable before this most recent announcement. He is recovering from a torn shoulder labrum.

In addition to Pouncey and Farrior, OL Ramon Foster was also injured during the final preseason game. Foster was placed on injured reserve due to a torn tricep.
