JAMES THE LEADER
Iowa fans know Vandenberg is their man for 2012
QB James Vandenberg...A product of Keokuk, Iowa, Vandenberg rewrote the state passing records in high school and is one of the most decorated quarterbacks to ever step foot onto the Hawkeyes' campus. With Ricky Stanzi entrenched as the starter at quarterback, Vandenberg redshirted in 2008. However when Stanzi went down with an injury in 2009, he was thrown into action as a redshirt freshman and almost led an upset of top-10 ranked Ohio State in Columbus (Iowa lost by a field goal in overtime). After spending the 2010 season as Stanzi's back-up once again, Vandenberg finally became the full-time starter last season as a junior with mixed results. He finished with 3,022 passing yards, and a 25-to-7 TD-to-INT ratio, but struggled to come through in some clutch situations and had only one 300+ passing yard performance. Vandenberg returns for his senior season in 2012 and while he's far from flashy, he might be the most consistent Big Ten signal-caller. But Iowa coaches (and scouts) are hoping for more of a killer instinct out of Vandenberg this season as too often he appeared to be thinking too much, leading to his middling 56.9% career completion percentage. Although he doesn't stand out as "elite" in any one category, he does have the size and arm talent to at least warrant consideration as a draft pick next April, but will need a productive senior year to boost his late round draft stock.

HIGH HOPES FOR FIEDOROWICZ
TE C.J. Fiedorowicz goes up for a grab. (EA Sports)
Iowa fans have to come to rely on consistently excellent play from the tight end position. The Hawkeyes have produced a strong line of All-Big Ten performers and NFL draft picks, including guys like Dallas Clark, Tony Moeaki, Brandon Myers, Erik Jensen and Scott Chandler. Last season was a down year for tight end production in Iowa City, at least until C.J. Fiedorowicz started getting revved up late in the fall. Perhaps it was merely a prelude to a breakout campaign for the former stud recruit who looks poised for a big junior year. "I've been working the last two years to be at this point," he told ESPN.com. "I've got a lot of confidence, but I guess I'll have to wait until the season comes around to really prove myself." Fiedorowicz stood out this spring for the Hawkeyes, as head coach Kirk Ferentz said he was "clearly at a different level." The combination of feeling comfortable with the staff's expectations for him and a new offense that should feature the tight end had Fiedorowicz excited about the possibilities. New offensive coordinator Greg Davis, who coached Green Bay Packers tight end Jermichael Finley at Texas, raved about Fiedorowicz's skills this spring while promising to use him in the passing game. "I love his new style of offense," Fiedorowicz said. "It's easy to listen to him, with where he came from and having all that success. Tight ends are in every play, and we caught hundreds of balls this spring. We have deeper routes, more detailed routes, and I love it. I think we'll definitely be throwing more than we have in the past.

Hawkeyes release depth chart for football season opener
Iowa released a football depth chart for its season-opening game against Northern Illinois which illustrates just how young the Hawkeyes will be this season.
Four true freshmen, 10 redshirt freshmen and 14 sophomores are among the 52 players listed on the depth chart released by Iowa this afternoon.
The group includes one true freshman who is listed as a starter for the Sept. 1 game at Chicago’s Soldier Field, punter Connor Kornbrath.
The other first-year Hawkeyes to earn spots on the chart are running backs Greg Garmon and Michael Malloy as back-ups to Damon Bullock at running back and Kevin Buford, who is listed on the depth chart at right corner.
The only redshirt freshman to earn a starting spot at this point is Austin Blythe, a 6-foot-3, 275-pound right guard from Williamsburg, Iowa.
There are a handful of sophomores listed as starters on what will be the youngest team Kirk Ferentz has fielded at Iowa in his 14 seasons.
Brandon Scherff at left tackle, Kevonte Martin-Manley at receiver, Bullock at running back and Mark Weisman at fullback are listed on offense while the sophomores listed as starters on defense include Carl Davis at left tackle and Louis Trinca-Pasat at right tackle.
