It's been a while since the University of Akron have had a winning football team. After the Akron Soccer team won the National Championship in 2010, the Akron Zips have thought that they may have other winning teams in the future. After Head Coach Rob Ianello was fired Coach Terry Bowden was hired for the 2012 football season.

The Akron Zips opened the new Infocision Stadium - Summa Field for the 2009 football season. The stadium was built to replace the Rubber Bowl. The name of the team is the "Zips," which comes from "zippers" which was a rubber shoe made by the BF Goodrich Company. The name was later shortened to "Zips." The schools mascot is a Kangaroo.
