Michigan State's 2017 Recruting Class In Review

By: Wally Hatchard, ESPN Recruting Lead Writer

So after losing in the National Title game to Ohio State and the resignation of head coach Mark Dantonio, Michigan State still pulled in the 20th best class in the nation. Here were the headlining recruits:

5 star WR Kaelin Day | Belltown, Michigan
After pulling in the top WR in last year's class, the Spartans have done it again. Day isn't the No. 1 receiver in our ESPN150, but he is the #58 player overall. Day has the talent to be a great receiver, but multiple arrests before his junior year kept him off Belltown's varsity until then and have turned teams like Alabama and Ohio State away. If Day can stay clean, expect him to make an impact Day 1.

5 star CB DeMaryius Sherman | Detroit, Michigan
Coming from Detroit Country Day, Sherman was the best corner in the state of Michigan. His 6'3", 213 pound frame has him being compared to Richard Sherman. This Sherman did not allow a single catch to a receiver he was covering. Named Michigan's Mr. Football for 2017, Sherman could start in just his freshman year.

4 star HB De'Ray Ray | Gainseville, Florida
Known for the YouTube video where he ran a 4.31 40 yard dash, Ray is a physical specimen at 5'11", 187. Ray isn't necesarily an every down back, but with a few trips to the weightroom he can become one. Expect Ray to either redshirt or be more of a role player in his freshman year.

Wally Hatchard is the lead ESPN recruting writer. To contact him, email him at [email protected].

Michigan State Hires Virginia Tech OC Scot Loeffler to Become Next Head Coach

By: Andy Ryan, ESPN CFB Writer
Loeffler

The news is official. Scot Loeffler will be the next Spartans coach. While some may call him a "no-name" and a "terrible choice", those people need to think twice before saying anything. Loeffler, a Michigan Graduate, has served as offensive coordinator at Virginia Tech for the past 5 seasons and has been a quarterbacks coach at numerous other places in the CFB world. At Virginia Tech, Loeffler coached 2 NFL Starting QB's (Logan Thomas and Mark Leal) and has another one as a backup in the NFL (Brendan Motley). Heck, while he was at Florida, Tim Tebow was #1 in passing efficency.

With a brand new QB in Redshirt Freshman Nick Hall taking over, this is a logical move for the Spartans. Almost every QB Loeffler has coached for at least a year has gotten to the NFL in some capacity. I expect no different with the Hall and Loeffler pairing.

Andy Ryan is an ESPN CFB writer. To contact him, email him at [email protected].
