From the Ashes: The University of Chicago (NCAA14)

Chicago – The Board of Trustees at the University of Chicago announced today that they intend to bring their athletic programs back to the Division 1 level, including the Football program. The goal is to have to program ready to play its first game in the 2013 season.

Chicago had a rich history of football. A charter member of the Big 10 conference, the Maroons won a National Championship in 1905 and claims another in 1914, though it is disputed.

They also fielded the first Heisman Trophy winner, Jay Berwanger in 1935.

Chicago President Robert Hutchins eliminated football in 1939.

The Board described that many donors and benefactors to the University were frustrated at the lack of visibility that the University was receiving on a national level. They also described how universities like Northwestern, Tulane, and Stanford have been able to maintain their academic prowess while fielding competitive athletic teams.

Re: From the Ashes: The University of Chicago (NCAA14)

Indianapolis - NCAA President Mark Emmert announces radical changes to the structure of the FBS system for college football. The previously approved playoff structure scheduled to start in 2014-2015 has now been dissolved and the current BCS system will be maintained for the foreseeable future.

"We felt that the playoff system would favor the top schools too much and behind the scenes, the folks here at the NCAA have devised a system that we believe will truly field a champion each season." While details were not immediately available, it will involve movement of teams from particular conferences to others and revenue sharing.
