Bulls On Parade » Driveshaft's Texans Diary

Driveshaft's 2014 Houston Texans

From First to Worst

After going 12-4 in 2012, the Texans had a completely abysmal turn-around in 2013, going 2-14, the last in their division. That 2-14 record led to the firing of long-time quarterback, Matt Schaub, along with long-time head coach, Gary Kubiak.

For the first time 7-8 years, the Texans have a QB competition to deal with. The Texans picked up Ryan Fitzpatrick from free agency during the off-season, acquired Ryan Mallet from the Patriots, and spent their fourth round draft pick on rookie Tom Savage.

The Face of the Franchise

With their two stars on offense -- Andre Johnson and Arian Foster, creeping up in age, the Texans have a lot of re-building to do. Johnson and Foster have had to deal with their fair share of injuries over the past couple of years. Both players missed a fair amount of time in 2013, but hope to return to form in 2014.

With their 14 first round picks since entering the league in 2002, the Houston Texans have spent half of those on defensive lineman. From Jason Babin to Jadeveon Clowney, the Texans have always been a very defensive team. Watt and Clowney give the Texans one of the best, and most exciting pass-rushing duos in the entire NFL.

The Texans got as close to a perfect draft as you can possibly get. They drafted for positions they needed, and excelled at it. They picked up the top prospect in the draft, Jadeveon Clowney, to pair up on the outside with J.J. Watt, giving the Texans an amazing pass-rush.

Xavier Su'a-Filo is one of the top guards in the draft, and Texans immediately picked him up after he fell to the second round. He was definitely first round quality, and surprisingly didn't get picked up sooner.

Texans got a quality pick out of tight end C.J. Fiedorowicz... he may not have been a top prospect, but he can certainly evolve into a top tight end. He has tremendous route running ability, and he's an above-average blocker. He doesn't have the best hands, and he's been known to drop wide-open passes, but that's something the Texans will be able to work on with him.

Louis Nix III was amazing value in the fourth round. The guy is a powerful and speedy nose tackle. The only reason he fell so low in the draft is stamina issues. Nix put on some unwanted weight, and it affects his play. Injuries are another concern with Nix, but that's something he hopes to avoid heading into his rookie season.

O'Brien names Mallett as starter for week one
It was a tough decision, but we liked what we saw out of Mallett this preseason. Mallett led the league in passing yards, and had a nice fourth quarter comeback against the 49ers in the final week of preseason. We'll be looking forward to see what Mallett can produce against the Redskins in week one.
