  Bruce Arians steps down as head coach of Cardinals Glendale, Ariz. — Bruce Arians has informed the Arizona Cardinals of his decision to step down as head coach, General Manager Steve Keim announced on Monday. Hired as the 40th head coach in franchise history on Jan. 17, 2013, Arians became the first Cardinals coach since Norm Barry back in 1925 to record at least nine wins in his first season, with a record of 10-6 for 2013. During the 2014 season, Arians was named AP Head Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons, leading the Cardinals to an 11-5 record. One year later, Arians lead his team to a 13-3 record and to the NFC Championship game. Arians said: “I gave everything I had to this team the last two seasons, but this year, in particular, has been tough on me. As hard as it is to leave this position, I know that it’s the best thing for myself, my family and the Arizona Cardinals. “Although we fell short of our goals this year, I’m proud of our teams these past five seasons. “I’m not sure what my future holds, but I know that I’ll always consider myself a Cardinal. This team is in good hands with a lot of outstanding people, and I expect great things ahead for the Arizona Cardinals.” It remains to be seen what lies ahead for the Cardinals, with many people believing that the 2017 season is the end of an era with the current team now moving beyond their Championship window. With quarterback Carson Palmer and star wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald mulling over their futures and the 2018 season, rebuilding mode may very well be on in Arizona. |
