I agree with others that hopefully after this year the PS4 version gets 99.9% of the attention where the PS3 version just becomes a roster update essentially. IMO I don't see how they can pump anymore into the PS3 version without sacrificing other stuff. Anyways, looking back at MLB The Show on PS3 it only got better each year. Expecting the same with the PS4. This is only the beginning.

Re: PS4 Discussion (MLB The Show 14)
The PS3 is not the PS2, sales have dropped off a cliff since the PS4 came out. DEC/JAN NPD was dreadful and at this rate the PS3 won't make it to 100 million WW. One of the main reasons the PS2 was supported for so long is because people were still buying it. If I had to guess I'd say Dark Souls II will be the last hurrah, after that next-gen will officially become current-gen.
Also, can we drop the line of thought that Sony can't afford to abandon the PS3 install base because there is more money to be made there compared to the PS4? NBA 2K, Battlefield, Assassin's Creed, Madden, and FIFA sold more on PS4 in January and its not like that's going to change in months and years to come.
tldr; Dev time is precious, don't spend too much time on the dying console!
And the reason they continued to develop for the ps2 for a long time wasn't necessarily that they kept selling ps2 systems, but rather that they had already sold a lot of them.
And for that very same reason...they should continue to develop for the ps3...because there are more ps3 systems in households than ps4 systems and that will remain true for a few years.
Also...take into context that January sales for games released in Oct/Nov for the ps3 doesn't mean that those games sold more on the ps4. The sale on those games peaked in the months they were released.Comment

Before I respond in full, let me just get this out of the way first: I am not saying abandon in the sense of killing off the PS3 version, I'm saying it should become a roster update as soon as possible. Check my posts in the very beginning of this thread, they should provide more context for my stance.

I'm going to ask you the same question that I posted earlier in this thread (or some other one, can't remember) - If MLB The Show 14 sells under 100,000 copies on PS3 at release (1/3rd the amount of the previous version, like GT 6) will your stance change? Remember, despite its critical acclaim the series is very niche and doesn't rake in the cash like some of Sony's other franchises.
Like I said, I believe Dark Souls II will be PS360's swan song and anything released after that will bomb hard. The PS4 thirst is real, there's a reason why it is still mostly sold out three months after launch. Many people (including myself) initially thought that it would take a few years before next-gen started cannibalizing current-gen, but it is happening much quicker than anyone could have anticipated.Bakin' soda, I got bakin' sodaComment

I'm sorry but there really isn't, all you need to do is look at Sony's #1 franchise Gran Turismo. Everyone and their mother justified a PS3 release with "They could've done it on the PS4, but the money/install base on current-gen is just too good to pass up". The game bombed hard and it didn't even chart in the US.
Nah, games are made for systems that sell. PS2 sold almost 42 million units after the PS3 came out, but you can count the number of games released in the US the last two years of its life on both hands. Current sales will determine if games are made, not past ones.
I failed to preface my stance in my last post because I outlined it earlier in this thread (way earlier) and I certainly don't expect anyone to read through almost 200 pages to find it, so I'll re-iterate that I'm not saying the PS3 version shouldn't be made at all - just that the minimum amount of time should be spent on it (aka turn it into a roster update)
Speaking of context, I never said they sold more on PS4 overall... I mentioned January for a reason, and that's because from here on out its only going to get worse as the PS4 becomes more readily available. Current trends are more indicative than past ones, unless you honestly think that PS3 sales will start to pick up for some reason...

Re: PS4 Discussion (MLB The Show 14)
Highly doubt they are going to make the PS3 version a "roster update" anytime soon. Like I said man it's not going to happen for a few years. I know that's not what you want to hear. I can guarantee you MLB 15 is going to get the same amount of work as 14 on ALL platforms. I get what you're saying, but because you see the PS3 as dying console doesn't mean a development team at SCEA does.
Why do you think the PS3 and PS4 versions are coming more then a month apart?
It has zero to do with final touches or blah blah. It has to do with SCEA hoping you spend $120 if you have both consoles
They are not going to give you the PS4 copy for $10
This is the only year they can get away with getting people that still have both consoles to spend $120
perhaps $160 if they get the Vita version as well
Next year the PS4 will be even more in Sony fans homes which they will start to transition the major production into that console and they are not going to spend resources $$$ on putting efforts into PS3 and PS4 versions when the PS3 will not sell nearly as much as it will this year
They will throw new rosters and a couple of things here and there like a new batting gloves or new cleats into a PS3 version but you are not going to get anything close to the PS4 version next year.
So they will tag the game at $60 for PS3 next year and not sell much and they will start to scale back more and more until you will not either game a version on ps3 or it will be a new version with a spray paint job
It is called a business. SCEA is in this business to make money and that is the bottom line.
Best thing SCEA can do after the game releases on both consoles is to announce that next years version will be strictly focused on PS4 like COD is doing. That will lead to more PS4 console sales knowing they are going to get full go attention on PS4 and in no time their sales for the PS4 version will be hitting PS3 sales pre PS4 launch
Me as an owner of the PS4 do not want to hear both versions are getting 50/50 treatment. I spent $420 on my ps4 and $49 on PS plus...I expect devs to give me the full glory on the new console
This years PS4 version is going to look nicer and have a few bells and whistles over the PS3 version but the real diff will be next yearComment

Re: PS4 Discussion (MLB The Show 14)
We'll see how the market reacts, but in the end even if the fervor for PS4 is as high as it seems the market is still limited by supply.
Looking back the PS3 sold about 9 mil in its second year (2007), the PS4 is projected to sell around 12 mil (2014) in its second year. That is not a gigantic increase in the market. Unless every The Show fan moves over to PS4 very quickly (which may happen given how small the The Show fan base is compared to other franchises), there will be plenty of fans on PS3-only to buy the game. Sony would be foolish to not support the PS3 version (beyond a roster update) for a while.
Because the PS3 and PS4 are fairly close there isn't much reason to not think development resources spend on the PS4 version will also benefit the PS3 version. Even if say next year San Diego develops a new mode, from the ground up and started development on PS4. It is likely that that mode could be implemented into the PS3 version, expecially if its not reliant on the extra visual horse power of the PS4.
I will admit though that I would rather Sony drop support for the PS3 as a PS4 owner and focus solely on that version. But that is only because I have no use for the PS3 version of The Show anymore. But I also realize that the resources spent on the PS3 version of the game might be outweighed by the resources brought in by its sales. that means more revenue overall and theoretically more resources spent on the PS4 version as a result.Comment

NFL: Dallas Cowboys
NHL: Dallas Stars
NBA: Dallas Mavericks

Let me just add this. I will bet that the PS3 absolutely dominates the sales on the Show in April and the PS4 will dominate the sales in May.
I don't think there's any doubt that they will focus on the ps4. But why wouldn't they make the ps3 "feature complete" for a few years while it still has a market?Last edited by juicer420; 02-15-2014, 03:46 AM.Comment

Re: PS4 Discussion (MLB The Show 14)
A few people here mentioned The Show as a 'system seller' before PS4 released. I still believe this is the case and the sooner they concentrate on ps4 the better for everyone involved.
PS3 owners would possibly still buy the game on that platform even if it just received a touch-up. EA Sports released FIFA up to 2005 on the PS1, so there must have been a market for it.
The key here is not to dilute their resources by continuing to try to squeeze more out of the previous console. Just look at 13, not much more can be done in that respect.

Re: PS4 Discussion (MLB The Show 14)
They offset the release date so we could buy both and to give them a bit more time develop PS4...remember they are doing it from scratch.
At best next year, when they don't have to build either from scratch they will release at the same time and be equal. Then when they see the sales trend the following year it will be a roster update for the PS3 with all the bells and whistles on the PS4.
In truth, what will probably happen if they are smart is that after this gen version comes out looking awesome it will inspire everyone to crossover the following year...especially if they announce next gen exclusive features.
The ability to save franchise from PS3 MLB 13 to PS4 MLB 14 sort of shows that they are pushing peeps to the new console. They are certainly removing any barriers to do so. Hell this will make people buy PS3 version then switch over THIS year when the reviews come in strong.
Also keep in mind the context....there are no other baseball games on the market. Unless you think RBI baseball is going to be anywhere near the Shows level.Comment

Any word on if there will be legends in the game ? I don't think there has been legends since the show 10Comment

Re: PS4 Discussion (MLB The Show 14)
Looks about like I expected. Very very pleasant to look at, that is. But I hope the real magic is in the animations and presentation.
It might seem a lil' benign, but if I see the same running animations for outfielders and baserunners as PS3, I'll be disappointed some...
Super speedy players should not just be a faster moving version of the same animation a slow player uses.Comment
