Re: MLB 14 The Show PS4: Road to the Show Thread

I created myself as an 18 yr old LF/1B two nights ago (I just bought a PS4 on Monday). I was drafted by PIT in the 2nd round after two years in JUCO. My first season in AA at Altoona was a brief one. I was hitting .400 with 2 HR and 9 RBI through 5 games, but I tore my Achilles' tendon while diving back into first base on a pickoff throw in game #6 and missed the rest of the season. I've never, ever had that happen before.

Had a good second game of the year. Went 3-5 with 2 doubles and 3 SB. One of the steals was at home. 2 outs and a full count. I started running on the pitch and it was a walk. I arrived at home just as the batter started walking toward first. Catcher just sat there. Wasn't sure I was safe.

Edit: just looked at the highlights and the catcher was ready for me by the time I was 2/3 down the base path but must have missed the tag and I was called safe. He put his glove down to tag and then lifted it back up and I slid under. Minor league ball?
      were the bases loaded?

Re: MLB 14 The Show PS4: Road to the Show Thread

Just started a new road to the show as a SP with the most updated rosters as of 1-1-15 . I never played as a pitcher usually make a 2nd baseman or LF so i can go play for my CUBs but seeing as all the Cubs really need is SP now i made one with the plan of being a SP that can consistently throw 97mph - 100mph Fastballs for 9innings. Picked 4seam fb and 2seam fastball and slider as my 3 pitches will eventually add a change-up as my 4th and last pitch.
Had a below average showcase filled with lots of strikes but also a lot of hits only gave up 3 earned runs tho. The only thing about being such a hard thrower is that when the hitters make contact the ball always travels. Ended picking my team got drated to the Cubs age 22 SP in the 5th round with C potential.
After 8 Games in double AA Tensseese Smokies i dominated going 5-2 as the 5h starter posting a 1.64era and leading in strikeouts, whip, era. Got moved up to AAA Iowa
Love playing as a SP only thing gets boring not hitting all the time but love getting close to having a no hitter i have 3 complete games and 3 shutouts playing on dynamic difficulty. Also have two 1- hit games which could of easily been perfect games. Im currently a 70overall trying to make it to Majors in my first year. Being such a hard thrower wasnt good for me in the showcase but as a pro its has been great because i get a lot of strikeouts and when baters do make good contact its usually a flyout or ground out but i also have games where i give up tons of hots but luckily good enough to get the clutch strikeouts and not give up an runs
Only thing in sports that matters is Chicago Bears, Bulls, Cubs, and Blackhawks .

Re: MLB 14 The Show PS4: Road to the Show Thread

Quick question that I couldn't find on this forum or anywhere else online.. Does anyone have second half collapses as a SP?

Doing a RTTS as a SP, 1st year in the minors the entire time... 2nd / 3rd year in the majors, and both years went identical. I started out playing GREAT until right around the all-star break (forget exactly). ERA around 2.2ish, lasting late in games, etc.

I had an insanely small amount of K's, but whatever. The first year in the pros, around the midway point I suddenly started to get ROCKED. Everything would be crushed, I'd have tons of 2 inning or close outings... But I'd throw a ton of K's. ERA went from 2.2 to finishing around 3.5 because of how I pitched at the end of the year.

I thought I subconsciously was doing something different, but then I started out my 2nd season great... and it repeated.

Any doubts that I somehow was doing something wrong is now curbed because I just started out the 3rd year and I am pitching great... Really don't want this to repeat every year.

          Any explanations?

Has anybody won a Gold Glove as a CF?

I just don't get enough assists, which seem to be a major factor. The most assists I've had from CF in a season is 6, meanwhile Adam Jones is somehow getting 25. I don't even think I've had 25 chances total, and when I do get a chance to throw someone out it's always just late. My arm is rated 99 so it's probably not gonna get any better.

Maybe I'll move to a corner spot, it seems like it's a little easier to get assists from the corners.

I started my RTTS recently, and notice that a most of minor league pitchers fastballs are only hitting in the high 80s and rarely does one have a fastball in the 90s, seems off to me.

I have, but I now just realized that I started the rtts with SCEA's updated roster and not the OSFM roster, I'm a idiot. Its a little too late, I'm still in the first year but I got off to a good start only spent 12 games in AA before getting promoted to AAA and lately have been on a terror, hoping to make it on the 40man roster to possibly get a September call up. the only thing that bothered me with the slow fastballs was that I recently switched from using analog hitting to "timing" because I keep ruining the rubber on my joystick using analog controls for hitting and I was being early on most of my swings not being use to the pitch speed.

I would still recommend doing so. In a few years its cool to play amongst prospects. I also am not the biggest fans of MLBs random player generator as most of the CAP look really odd.

This was a weird season. Probably won't do a narrative for this one, just an overview/stats.

                        YEAR 4

After my breakout 3rd season where I just missed out on the MVP, I was hoping to put up a dominant year 4 and take home the hardware. At the All-star break I was hitting .313 with my OBP in the .380's and my SLG I want to say was over .650. Had 26 homers and 80+ RBI's already. Just crushing the ball. Playing better defense, career low in errors/career high in OF assists.

Then... I took a long break. I was getting a little burnt out on The Show after playing it so hard for like 5 months, and I went and traded it in for credit towards NBA2K15. I thought by the time 15 came around I could borrow my friends copy to finish out my season before importing it into 15. But then a few weeks ago I started getting a serious urge to play some RTTS, so I went and bought a used copy, and picked up right where I left off.

After not playing for months I was expecting to be very rusty, but for the first 15-20 games after the break I was on fire. I raised my average by 20 points. I had elevated myself ahead of Giancarlo Stanton in the AL MVP race (now on the Yankees, of course), despite him being on a ridiculous HR pace.

But then... My lord, I have never been so ice cold in this game. Multiple stretches of 3-5 hitless games. Couldn't get solid contact on anything. Doubting my swing and my timing, experimenting with different swings, etc. All in all, my average dropped about 35 points from mid-August to the end of Sept. And after 35 walks in the first half of the season, I had 12 in the 2nd half. That was a big disappointment, because I was really starting to get the hang of taking walks prior to my sabbatical.

I was still able to find power through home runs (26 first half, 14 2nd half), but my doubles and triples were scarce and my SLG dipped to .582, still solid, but not near the heights I was at previously.

All told, I finished with a .298/.348/.582 line with 40 HR's and 115 RBI's. Still looks like a solid line on paper, but it could have been so much better.

The one cool thing from the 2nd half of the season was that I hit the 100 Homer milestone at age 21. A moment you can enjoy below (the announcers talk about it, and there's a mini cut-scene in the dugout afterwards:

                        <embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://v8.tinypic.com/player.swf?file=dm7foi&s=8" height="420" width="440">

Along with my individual performance, the Royals also took a step back this season, going from 110 wins to 92, still a very good total and enough to win the division.

                        PLAYOFFS

However, these playoffs would unfold pretty much the opposite of the 2016 playoffs.

In the prior year, the Royals rolled through the AL on the way to the World Series, despite my player having a huge dip in performance. The pitching staff and a few other hot bats carried the team. We eventually lost to the Dodgers, but we were dominant against the AL.

This year, we faced the Yankees in the ALDS, and my bat was on fire. I hit .412 and slugged .824 with 2 homers as we fell in 4 games, due to huge innings given up by our relievers and 2 bad starts from Mat Latos.

                        Another year, another playoff loss.

                        OFFSEASON

Alex Gordon (34) and James Shields (36, only started 3 games this year due to heavy declining) both retired.

Again I declined arbitration and signed a team friendly 1 year/$3m deal. The team rewarded me by bringing in 2 relievers (Jake McGee, Pedro Strop) to help out the bullpen, as well as Todd Frazier to man the hot corner, as we let Mike Moustakas go and Miguel Sano (acquired in a trade a few years ago) still isn't ready.

                        NEXT YEAR'S ROSTER

                        Opening Day lineup:

                        C - Salvador Perez (27, 86 ovr, B potential)
                        1B - Eric Hosmer (28, 90 ovr, A potential)
                        2B - Tyler Bortnick (30, 73 ovr, B potential)
                        3B - Todd Frazier (32, 84 ovr, B potential)
                        SS - Tim Beckham (28, 70 ovr, B potential)
                        LF - Brandon Guyer (32, 73 ovr, C potential)
                        CF - Julian Moses (22, 99 ovr, A potential)
                        RF - Shane Fuller (23, 74 ovr, B potential)

                        Opening Day rotation:

                        1. Gio Gonzalez (32, 94 OVR, A Potential)
                        2. Mat Latos (30, 91 OVR, A Potential)
                        3. Chris Archer (29, 81 OVR, B Potential)
                        4. Danny Duffy (29, 79, B Potential)
                        5. Jason Vargas (35, 79, B Potential)

                        Current bullpen:

                        LRP - John Danks (32, 77 ovr, C potential)
                        MRP - Jake McGee (31, 84 ovr, B potential)
                        MRP - Pedro Strop (32, 92 ovr, B potential)
                        MRP - Michael Mariot (29, 79 ovr, C potential)
                        SU - Kelvin Herrera (28, 88 ovr, B potential)
                        SU - Greg Holland (32, 95 ovr, B potential)
                        CP - Lester Grantham (23, 77 ovr, A potential)

                        Best prospects/rookies:

3B Miguel Sano (24, 69 ovr A potential). Might turn out to be a bust :-/
CP Lester Grantham (23, 77 A potential) brought up last September and now taking over for Holland as the closer
RHP Kyle Zimmer (26, 79 A potential, still in AAA for now)
LHP Sean Manaea (26, 73 A potential, also in AAA)

It sucks losing Alex Gordon, especially when he was still rated well, but I think this team might be built better to win that elusive WS ring. We will get enough offense, between myself, Hosmer, Frazier and Perez. And the other guys will chip in. But the pitching looks a lot better with an improved bullpen and a strong enough 3-man rotation to get through the playoffs. I will try to finish one more season before MLBTS 15 comes out, so next time I'll try to spruce this up a little bit.

I want to stop playing for now so that when 15 comes out it will be fresh and I won't be burnt out, but I'm getting the itch to start another season...

All I can say about this season is, UUUGGHHH.

That's how I felt at the plate for much of the year. I felt like everything was just a hair off. Slightly late, slightly early. Swinging over, swinging under. I spent a lot of time yelling at my TV.

I'll give you an example of how this season began for me.

These were my numbers from April:

Awesome right? It only got a little bit better in May:

These 2 months were terrible and put me way behind in my quest to continue improving and putting up MVP caliber numbers. Fortunately I made some improvements in June and July.

                            June:

                            July:

As you can see, I was scorching hot in July, and if it wasn't for this month my year end production would have been even more disappointing.

In July the Royals made a win-now trade and swung a deal for Ian Desmond, who's 32 years old in this reality, still an 84 and a nice improvement over our previous shortstop.

I made the All-Star game as a starter, largely, I'm sure, because my power numbers.

Let's take a minute to step back from my personal disappointments and admire how good my Royals were in this season. They finished the season at 112-50! Needless to say, we won the division and had the best record in baseball. The Yankees won 101 and were our closest competition.

Alright so back to Julian Moses. He finished the year with these numbers.

I wouldn't even care about my average dropping 28 points if I would have been able to continue improving my walk rate and get my on base percentage higher. Chalk this up as a disappointing season, although I still somehow finished 2nd in the MVP race to Giancarlo Stanton (currently on the Yankees) due to the MVP logic being weighted towards homers and RBI's I'm sure. Giancarlo clobbered 54 homers though and had 145 RBI's to go along with a better average, OBP and everything else.

Other than starting in the All-Star game, I won no other awards or accolades this season. No Silver Slugger despite 43 homers. No Golden Glove (I'd really like to know how they determine this. Is it just fielding percentage, putouts and assists?)

I calculated my BABIP because I felt like I just had some really crappy luck this year with fly balls and
grounders always seeming to find a glove. Here's the career trend on my BABIP:

                            2014
                            Average: .297
                            BABIP: .262

                            2015
                            Average: .284
                            BABIP: .325

                            2016
                            Average: .313
                            BABIP: .357

                            2017
                            Average: .298
                            BABIP: .321

                            2018

                            Average: .270
                            BABIP: .260 (?????)

Lowest BABIP of my career, and lower than my career BABIP of .316 by 46 points.

So hopefully I can rebound back to normal next year, with my improving K rate I should start to see my average and OBP climb much higher.

                            PLAYOFFS

I want to skip to the good part, so I'll gloss over some stuff.

First, we took care of the Blue Jays in the ALDS 3 games to 1.

Then, we got our much-anticipated rematch against the Yankees, who knocked us out last year. Despite their insane pitching trio of Bumgardner, Tanaka and Yu Darvish, we finished them off 4-1. I had a clutch homer off Bumgarner in game 4 that ended up being the only run of the game:

Then it was time for another rematch. The KC Royals were going to face the LA Dodgers in the World Series for the 2nd time in 3 years.

                            World Series

The Dodgers' pitching is nearly as good as the Yankees, however they don't have that 3rd guy that makes the Yankees playoff rotation unstoppable on paper. They've got Kershaw who's still a 99, and they've picked up Chris Sale who's a 93. But their 3rd guy is Chris Tillman, who's only a 79, and we get to face him every 3 games. And our pitching is extremely good as well. So I'm thinking "if we can beat Tillman and sneak a win away from Kershaw or Sale, we'll be able to stretch this thing out and hope for the best. The NL had won the All-star game this season, so we start out in LA.

Game 1, Kershaw predictably protects home field and beats us 2-0.

Game 2, I'm worried that with Sale coming up we're going to go down 0-2 and hope will start to fade. We actually get 4 runs off him though in 5.2 innings, and when Chris Perez comes in we go ballistic, scoring 6 runs on him in 1 inning, ultimately winning 10-4, We steal a game away on the road, and now get to go back home for 3 straight.

Game 3, I'm licking my chops to face Chris Tillman. Finally a righty, and an average righty at that. Only Chris Tillman decides he's going to pitch 7 and 1/3rd of 1-run baseball and steal the home field advantage back. My mind is boggled. Final score 3-1.

Game 4. Kershaw again. Uhh ohh. He pitches 6 good innings, allowing 2 runs. When he leaves the game, it's tied 2-2. In the top of the 9th inning though, Henry Rodriguez gives up a run and we escape 3-2. Series tied at 2-2.

Game 5. Sale again. This time he only is able to give them 5 innings, and we score 6 runs off him (5 earned). We take this game 6-3. I don't know why we like hitting Chris Sale, but apparently we do. We take a 3-2 lead and CHRIS TILLMAN is coming up, there's no way he beats us twice in a row, right?

Game 6. Seriously, Tillman. F*%#*ng seriously? He gives them 6 & 1/3rd of 4 hit, 2 run ball. Doesn't get the decision, but the Dodgers win 3-2.

Kershaw in game 7. Holy crap.

Game 7. Kershaw has the ball. We're in LA. But we play like we have nothing to lose. In 5 innings, Kershaw gives up 7 hits, 4 walks, and 4 earned runs. Chris Perez and Henry Rodriguez each give up a run in relief. I hit a solo homer off Rodriguez. Final score: 6-2.

                            World Series, bitches.

Salvador Perez won WS MVP. Todd Frazier won Postseason MVP (I was 2nd. We had almost identical stats.)

As for my personal performances, I played great against the Blue Jays, good against the Yankees, and just OK against the Dodgers, although I can always say I hit a homer in the 9th inning of a World Series Game 7. I managed to go 1-4 in 6 out of 7 games against LA, so it was pretty much as mediocre as I could get, although I hit 2 HR's in the series.

                            Overall my postseason stats were:

                            .262/.314/.600 with 6 HR, 11 RBI, 13 runs scored. I hit 2 doubles and a triple, 4 steals on 4 attempts, 4 walks/10 K's on 70 plate appearances.

                            Offseason

Uneventful. No retirements. Ian Desmond and Mat Latos both declined heavily. I had 2 years left of team control so I signed a 2 year/$7m team friendly deal hoping they'd spend some money to re-tool. Didn't happen. We'll see if we can have the same success next year. I'd expect 95 wins again, but who knows what will happen in the playoffs.

I want to stop playing until The Show 15 comes out so it's fresh and I'm not burnt out on baseball. But this season left a bad taste in my mouth. Who declines in their age 22 season? So I'm getting the itch to play another season before the new game comes out, play like I know I can, get that OBP up over .350 again, slug .600 again. We'll see.

Re: MLB 14 The Show PS4: Road to the Show Thread

I'm in 2018 of my RTTS career and after winning 3 straight Gold Gloves at 2B I decided to change positions to hopefully help out my team. I'm on the Braves and we have a pretty good team winning two World Series in the past four seasons:

                                C: Gattis
                                1B: Freeman
                                2B: RTTS Player
                                SS: Simmons
                                3B: Todd Frazier
                                LF: Justin Upton
                                CF: Jason Heyward
                                RF: BJ Upton

Still have Medlen, Wood, Minor, and Kimbrel on the pitching staff as well.

Anyway, I decided to change positions to RF because BJ Upton stinks as much in this game as he does in real life because there's a pretty good young guy on my team that can jump in at 2B for me (Cesar Hernandez). Well, I didn't realize that outfield defense is pretty tough. Over the first 10 days in the outfield I committed about 6 errors and cost my team two wins because of it. I think I'm getting the hang of it now, but I wanted to make sure.

The biggest issue I have is over the shoulder catches running towards the wall. The only thing I can go by is the red/yellow/green indicator. My question is when the indicator turns green, should I stop running and let the game's animations take over to make the catch? When it is green does that mean you are definitely in the correct spot? A few times I would run until it is green but then still move a little even though it is green and the ball bounces off my head.

The other issue I have is when I am going to the side and all the indicator says is to go to the side so I follow that, but then at the last second I see the ball marker on the field in a position that I can't get to due to the path I've taken because of the red/yellow/green indicator. The ball gets by me a lot and rolls to the wall.

So, you outfielders, are you looking at the red/yellow/green indicator most of the time on hits, or do you scan the field for ball markers, or do you try to look in the sky and pick up the ball?

I think I'll stick it out at RF a little longer since it is a nice change of pace and that new 2B is batting over .300 while BJ was sitting at .200. My team has a 15 game lead at the end of June so we've got a cushion for me to learn the position better. Safe to say though, I won't be getting my fourth straight Gold Glove.
