Re: MLB 14 The Show Franchise Progress

So I advanced to the ALDS against the Rangers. Tanaka beat Garza in game 1 in a pitching duel 2-1. Texas won game 2 with Darvish against Lee 5-2. We were able comeback and win game 3 in 12 innings in Texas with a score of 3-1. Game 4 is up next and it is Nova vs. Garza

Re: MLB 14 The Show Franchise Progress

Using my Tribe as always and made it to mid-May with the team on a tear.
Then we lost Lonnie Chisenhall for 6+ Months with a dislocated ankle.
That sent us scrambling for some sort of replacement at 3rd base... enter A-Rod.

The Yankees are in total rebuilding mode currently and put 8 players on the trading block (including C.C. Sabathia, Jeter and A-Rod). They are in desperate need of a lot of players. After trading David Robertson to the Tigers (who are also doing unbelievably sh*tty) they needed some sort of veteran closer potential - so here is the trade.

The trade went through as Cleveland received A-Rod, RP, Jose Ramirez and RP, Dellin Betances.

The Yanks get three RPs - Pestano, Athison and Axford. Axford was doing really well as my setup man, but I have a long-term plan for that position that doesn't really include him in the future. Pestano and Atchison have been a thorn in my side as I really don't like their game whatsoever.

We just finished our second sweep of the Tigers and are now 33-15 and 5.5 games ahead of the Royals (12.5 ahead of the Tigers). The Dodgers have a slightly better record to lead the majors (33-14).

Current leaders in key categories -
      AVG -
      AL - .344 - Mike Napoli (BOS)
      NL - .343 - Paul Goldschmidt (ARI)

      Home Runs -
      AL - 17 - Mike Napoli (BOS)
NL - 14 -Ryan Braun (MIL)

      RBI -
      AL - 40 - Mike Napoli (BOS)
      NL - 42 - Paul Goldschmidt (ARI)

      Stolen Bases -
      AL - 25 - Michael Bourn (CLE)
      NL - 16 - Ben Revere (PHI)

      Strike Outs -
      AL - 86 - Justin Masterson (CLE)
      NL - 82 - Stephen Strasburg (WAS)

Re: MLB 14 The Show Franchise Progress

The offseason for my Cards isn't going quite as planned. Our biggest goal was to improve our bullpen and to find a solution at the platoon position that was 2B in 2014. We lost out on about 5 players that I felt like we had a good shot at signing/re-signing:

          * Mike Adams, who we traded for during the season, opted to not re-sign our offer sheet, but rather sign with Seattle.

          * Yunel Escobar decided to take less money for additional years and sign with the Mets

          * Jon Jay decided to not re-sign and be our everyday CF to start the year and sign with the Dodgers and their crowded outfield.

          * We then made a huge push for Sergio Romo to shore up our bullpen woes but he opted for Washington

          * Charlie Blackmon, who would've been a good role player to fill in the outfield position decided to sign in Minnesota

          * Thinking we had Jon Jay locked up, I let Peter Bourjos go and he was scooped up by the Cubs.

Setting now at Christmas of the offseason and trying to determine which path to take. We have depth in the outfield so losing, Jay, Bourjos, Blackmon isn't the worst thing in the world, but we lost our depth per se.

Really needing to get the bullpen in order and still don't have an answer at 2B. Wong started there but wasn't effective(poor hitter) so I want to let him develop another year, I really don't want to pay Ellis what he's asking (2M a year) and don't have anyone else ready. Could move Carp back to 2B but then 3B has no everyday player.

          The joys of the offseason
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

Re: MLB 14 The Show Franchise Progress

              Well, that escalated quickly.

That might be what the NL East leading Mets thought in the first half of July. The Nationals decided to get on one of their 9- or 10-game runs where they are unstoppable. This such run put them in 1st place in the NL East, 3 games up on the Braves and Mets.

The Marlins, meanwhile, proceeded to follow up on what turned out to be a 6-game win streak with a 5-game losing streak, punctuated by a terrible turn through the rotation with no support from the bullpen. However, the Marlins took 2-of-3 from the Mets to end the traditional first half on a positive note. Still, the Marlins are now 12 out and firmly entrenched in 4th place.

With the trading deadline around the corner, the Marlins are expected to stand pat. If any other trades are made, most think they will be minor. More likely, the team will comb through the free agents still available and see who might be worth a flyer, especially in the offense department. The same is likely true in regards to the waiver wire.

              Transactions:

Pitchers Michael Feliz and Tyler Kolek were sent back to AA-Jacksonville as the organization didn't want to have the youngsters feel too overmatched and pick up bad habits.

Relievers Michael Dunn and A.J. Ramos ran out of rope and are heading to AAA-New Orleans. Replacing the lefty arm in the pen will be Matt Reynolds, who was previously acquired in the Garrett Jones trade, and hard-throwing Arquimedes Caminero. In addition, Carter Capps was promoted to set-up along with fellow workhorse Carlos Marmol.

Angel Sanchez will get his first big league start in the week following the All-Star break. Brian Flynn will head back to long relief, where he seems more comfortable. Nate Eovaldi might be the next to run out of rope as he has pitched poorly of late. Before, he looked like a hard-luck pitcher. Lately, he's looked like a guy who's going to lose 20 games.

Justin Nicolino is trying to be the arm called up to replace Eovaldi (should it happen). Organizational scouts are raving about the season Nicolino has posted to this point. The team will likely try to refine his pitches in preparation for a potential call up.

The same is true for Colby Suggs. His very heavy sinker needs to be complimented by one of his secondary pitches - either his overhand curve or his fledging change-up.

I will be starting an Orioles franchise as of yesterday's date (simmed through it.) The Orioles are pretty much right where they are in real life. I'll update this in a bit when I have the game in front of me.

Re: MLB 14 The Show Franchise Progress

The offseason came to a close last night with the Cardinals doing a few changes to a roster that won the NL Central last season but lost in 5 games to the Padres in the NLDS.

A lot of question marks as we head into Spring Training:

                    Q: Who will play 2B?

A: Ask us again after Spring Training. Kolten Wong was supposed to be the answer last year, but he ended up playing in Memphis after June. Mark Ellis has been re-signed as an insurance policy, much like last year, but could become the everyday 2B if other plans don't work out. Allen Craig is being moved from RF to be the everyday 2B, but he hasn't played this position in years and is more cut out to play 1B, which has been locked up by Matt Adams.

Q: Was trading for Brett Gardner the right move?

A: Gardner gives the Cardinals a legitimate base stealing threat if he can get on base. He is a career .259 hitter and he only hit .229 for the Yankees a year ago. However, its not a huge gamble the Cards are taking because they traded away prospects at positions they could afford to lose (SP and 1B). Also, Gardner's contract is light on the books, only making $1.6M per season. And if he doesn't work out, there are several suitors who would be more than happy to take him and the Cards could look to address another need (bullpen).

                    Q: Bullpen better this year?

A: Absolutely the biggest question mark for the club. The Cards made moves, signing Joel Perralta, picking up Dominick Leone in Rule 5 Draft, and re-signing Lance Lynn for additional depth. However the bullpen remains extremely young, loaded with talent that may not be ready for the big stage. Also, Choate is aging as is Perralta, so we'll see how they pan out.

Q: Could Allen Craig be on his way out?

A: Short answer, yes. The Cardinals have moved him to 2B to try to fill a void, while allowing them to sign Gardner and find an everyday spot for Taveras. The Cards also have Randal Grichuk and Steven Piscotty who are knocking on the door to be everyday players. One thing is most likely for sure, if Craig doesn't solve the issue at 2B, then either he or Gardner could be traded before the deadline, possibly even both.

Q: What does the club do about the crowded outfield?

A: Well, the signing of Gardner indicates that the club does believe that they needed to "replace" Craig who is moving to 2B. Cards have Holliday in left as the only sure bet. Gardner is penciled in at CF and Taveras in RF. Randal Grichuk played well as a role player last year and seems destined to be an everyday OF sooner rather than later, whether that be in St.Louis or elsewhere. Piscotty was a September call up last year and is on the 40-man to begin the year. He seems ready to play everyday or even be a role player, but the plan is for him to start the year in Memphis and see how things shake out. If he has an amazing Spring, the club could be forced to make a quicker decision on the Craig/Gardner situation sooner rather than later. Also don't forget that Rafael Ortega, James Ramsey, Mike O'Neill, and Thomas Pham are also ready to make the jump soon.

These 5 questions will get a few answers during the Spring, but it may not be until the All-Star break before this team has all the answers it needs to make roster decisions. A crowded outfield, a young 'pen, and a new hitting and pitching coach, will make this an exciting season to watch especially in the early part to see how things shake out. The Cardinals went into the offseason with a gameplan to answer questions, but are starting Spring Training with presumably more questions than they had going into the winter meetings.

Re: MLB 14 The Show Franchise Progress

After picking up A-Rod we quickly saw that any of his past power and overall plate presence is gone. We decided a couple weeks later to end the experiment. It was difficult to find anyone willing to take him on and there only seemed to be one real suiter - the Mariners.

We had to package our decent 2B/SS sub and sometimes starter Mike Aviles as well. In exchange, we received 2B Nick Franklin and OF, Dustin Ackley.

We then decided to part ways with Carlos Santana and traded him and a prospect for Jay Bruce to add more power to the lineup.

We are now 46-22 and really making a strong push as we head to the All-Star Break. Our pitching has been excellent and I am rather excited to see what the rest of the season has in store for us. I have a feeling our trading is all but over at this point, but I will take that over not knowing what we are going to do to end the season.

As I was typing this we lost our outfielder David Murphy to a groin injury and is now on the 60 Day DL. We are dropping players like flies now and the season isn't even half over yet!

Just a quick update on my Angels franchise. Currently in the beginning of June with a record of 34-27, good enough for 1st place in the AL West.

                            Standings look like this.

                            Angels 34-27

Bats got off to a slow start and I had a team average under .210. Offense has started to come around and I've managed to raise the team BA to .230. Team ERA is in the upper half of the AL sitting at 3.53. Although my two most veteran pitchers Jered Weaver (4-6, 4.97) and CJ Wilson (3-4, 4.27) have struggled lately.

Garrett Richards has been a nice surprise in the rotation he's currently 3-3 with a 2.39 ERA.

Mike Trout started slow but is now on fire. He's hitting .307, with 15 bombs and 40 RBI. He's also ammassed 14 stolen bases and has an OPS of .988 and rising.

The Marlins completed a deal to bring in yet another infield prospect.

This time, it's SS Chris Taylor from the Mariners in return for RP Mike Dunn.

Taylor is a defensive-oriented SS that probably won't hit for much, if any, HR power (of course, neither should Hechavarria...), and might strike out quite a bit right now for a "contact and gaps" type of hitter. Still, with Furcal falling apart at the plate (his abilities are holding up it seems, but his average has dropped to .230), and Gregorius being what he is with little upsdie expected, the Marlins will hope Taylor can provide some reason to hope for future growth.

...Even if it's mostly on the defensive side of things.

"He could help the young pitchers throw more confidently, " a team scout spoke, "His defense could make him a weapon and his speed is nothing to sneeze at."

The Marlins did some roster reshuffling along with the deal, sending the aforementioned Furcal to AAA (optioned) along with equally-struggling Donovan Solano (optioned). SP Brian Flynn was also moved to AAA.

Chris Taylor was added to the 40-man roster and brought up to the majors. Jacob Turner and Henderson Alvarez returned to the majors as well. Henderson Alvarez will get another shot in the rotation while Turner will continue his rehab in long relief for the time being.

I was just wondering how you guys go about simming your franchise. It takes me a while to get through one season & I think its because I play to many games. I usually play with everyone in my rotation and just continue that through the season so its usually just play 1 sim 2 or 3 for the whole season.

Ive seen some people talk about playing one and simming 5 or playing once a week.

How many games do you guys sim and play and whats you're reasoning behind it?

                                Thanks
