Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

After our bullpen had a meltdown and blew the game against the Brewers to snap their 11 game losing streak, we bounced back to beat the Marlins 9-6 in a homerun infested game. We combined to hit 7 homeruns, including 2 from Justin Bour and Martin Prado hitting his 100th career homerun.

Despite struggling all game long with control, Carlos Martinez notched his major league leading 5th win of the year to move to 5-0 on this young season. He had an interesting stat line, 6 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 2 HR allowed, 5 walks, and 10 strikeouts.

Matt Holliday continues to be hot since returning from injury as he went 4 for 4 with a HR and 3 RBI.

We are now 17-12 on the season and sitting a full 2 games back of the Pirates.

Also its that time of year where teams are doing call ups and send downs based on performance. Loving it.

      Sitting at a dilemma.

Seung Hwan Oh struggled the first 2-3 weeks (45+ ERA) of the season so I moved him to Triple-A and brought up Sam Freeman to solidify our bullpen and provide us with another left hander in the pen. Oh is pitching extremely well in Triple-A, to no surprise, and I've searched the trade market for him and was able to find some good returns/prospects.

The dilemma, do I go ahead and trade him for the prospects or do I hang on to him in case I need help in our bullpen and hope that he can turn around his performance?

      Decisions, decisions.

Something like 14-24 at the minute in May. I play every game on QC, so its a bit quicker albeit not to the purists liking.

We are poor (we = Dodgers) batting under .200 as a team which is embarrassing. We pitch OK, but its rough, really rough. 5 hits is an offensive outburst for this team, its that bad.

Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

We are now 18-12 on the season through 30 games after taking down the Marlins and Jose Martinez 4-2 last night. We jumped out early on Martinez as Holliday blasted a 3-run homerun in the bottom of the 1st to give us an early 3-0 lead. But the Marlins would get 2 runs back in the Top of the 2nd to make it 3-2. Two innings later in the 4th, Matt Carpenter hit his NL leading 12th homerun of the season to make it 4-2. Neither team would score after that. Wainwright improved his record to 3-3 on the season and Rosenthal notched his league leading 9th save of the season.

We have one game left of this 4 game series with the Marlins before the Dodgers come to town. Thankfully we will miss Kershaw on this trip.

I've almost stopped playing games and only quick manage. Don't know why but I enjoy the game so much more managing as opposed to playing. In fact I find playing a little boring and maybe Im a little cynical about the game and potential rubber-banding mechanisms.

For a simulation sports game, its also a very easy to use, enjoyable management game.

Question I have - how do you determine who to scout? If you've won the world series what level of potential is reasonable to scout considering you'll be last in the draft?

            Thanks

As for scouting, I look at my roster and determine where I need "help" and need younger players who can develop into major league caliber players. Then I scout based on what I'm looking for in a particular player/position (speed, contact, power, defense, arm, etc....)

Then I find the player with the highest potential in these areas and scout him

Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

We have lost 3 games in a row. We lost the series finale to the Marlins and the first two vs the Dodgers. Our bullpen is taxed and our starting pitching has stunk the last two games, with Brett Anderson only going 5 innings and Carlos Martinez only going 4 innings while allowing 10 runs and walking 6.

We have one more game to get through before a much needed off day. Really need Mike Leake to eat up some innings in this game, to allow our pen to rest.

We are currently 3 1/2 games behind the hot Pirates.

Just had our first big trade of the season as the Mariners traded SP James Paxton and CP Steve Cishek to the Royals for 1B/DH Kendrys Morales.

Snapped a 5 game losing streak and took 2 out of 3 from Brewers. We were playing bad baseball for the last week but it's nice to have turned things around. We are 20-17 on the year and trail the Pirates by 5 games.

Just took 2 out of 3 from the Padres in Petco Park. We had a chance at the sweep but lost game 2 in 11 innings after Grichuk couldn't haul in a line drive that took him to the wall, allowing the winning run to cross the plate.

We are currently 6 games behind the Pirates who are playing outstanding baseball. Our next series is with the Pirates in PNC park. Hopefully we can sweep and get closer as May comes to an end.

Really concerned about Carlos Martinez who after starting the season 5-0 has been dismal in his last few starts and hasn't made it past 5 innings. His control is completely off as he is allowing an average of 4 walks per game in his last 3 starts.

Looks like I'm going to have a decision to make. Tommy Pham made the MLB squad out of Spring Training but now, nearly 2 full months into the season, he's just not producing. Hitting around .160 and in his limited play he has committed 6 errors.

Question now becomes who do we call up:

                      Jeremy Hazelbaker
                      Jose Martinez
                      Harrison Bader

All three have pros and cons, obviously. Bader is the most productive offensively, while Hazelbaker may be the best all around defender. Jose Martinez may be the most balanced of the 3.

Took 2 out of 3 against the Pirates in PNC park to get within 5 games of them.

Wacha locked down his major league leading 7th win of the season.

Next up is a 3 game series with the Mets.

Beat the Mets and Thor in Game 1 of the series. We jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st but unfortunately Brett Anderson's struggles continued as after 5 innings he had given up 4 runs on 8 hits.

Trailing 4-3 heading into the bottom we walked off on a 2 run double by Stephen Piscotty who drove in Reuben Tejada and Magnerius Sierra, who both walked.

Next up game 2 with Carlos Martinez vs Stephen Matz.

Completed the 3 game sweep of the Mets last night. We won 2 games in walk off fashion, and one we scored 2 in the 8th to take the lead and Rosenthal closed it out in the 9th. We are now 3 1/2 games behind the Pirates who are starting to falter a little bit.

Next up is a 4 game homestand with the Rockies to close out the month of May. The Rockies have been good this year as they sit 2nd in the West behind the defending World Series Champion Dodgers.

Nearing the end of August, my Red Sox are in a tight race with the Blue Jays who are in 1st and the O's in 2nd, I'm a 1/2 game behind the O's.
Just finished a game that I feel was not a fair ending. Battled with the Indians into the 13th, scored 2 and went with Kimbrel to close it out (of course) only to lose it. I felt I couldn't avoid the loss, whatever I threw with Kimbrel, it just wasn't going to be enough.
One thing I did learn was, when things aren't going my way, I need to slow down. I have a tendency to rush to the next pitch to try and get redemption but I only end up getting more frustrated.

                              Moving on...

-Mookie Betts is in the race for MVP.(1 HR shy of a 30/30 season!)
-Chris Sale is dominating but in a tight race with James Paxton
-JBJ and Moreland are having very nice seasons.
-Hanley is my biggest disappointment so far, hitting low .200s homered 12ish times so far.
-Sandoval has hit well(just under .300) but I am not a fan of his. He got injured for about 2-3 months (torn groin) early on and his slow speed annoys the crap out of me.
-Price has pitched pretty good, Porcello hasn't however.
                              -Kimbrel has been mostly great.
-I've struggled to find consistence at Catcher, going with Swihart and Leon in the ML right now with Vazquez in AAA. No one has hit above .240 so far in the majors.

I traded away Ross, Abad, Pomeranz, Holt, Rusney, Craig and Elias

Acquired Ian Krol, Alex Wood and UT Hernan Perez
-Krol and Wood have been fantastic along with Thornburg and Smith.
-Hembree has been very solid as well.

A tidbit on my minors leaguers
                              -Devers isn't progressing well.
-Groome and Raudes are pitching very good in AA.
-Ball and Lankins have pitched well.
-Travis is doing meh, nothing special.
-Marco Hernandez has failed at all levels so far.
-Henry Owens had done well in AAA and got promoted to pitch ok in the majors.
-Kendrick has since replaced Owens in the majors as he's deserved a glance in the majors.
-Dominguez played very good in AAA, he's now occupying a spot on the ML bench.
                              - OFs Sturgeon and Meyers have both excelled in AA.
-So has C Jake DePew, which has gotten him a AAA callup.
-Dalbec has played well in AA.

                              (I should publish this book.)

For the 3rd time in the last 4 games, we have won on a walkoff. This time it was the Rockies who would fall victim to our late inning heroics.

Down 3-1 heading into the bottom of the 9th, after a Bryan Pena 2 out single, Kolton Wong launched his 5th homerun, his 3rd in the last 5 games, of the season to tie the game. After a scoreless 10th inning, Matt Holliday hit the game winning walk off 2 run homerun in the bottom of the 11th.

Seth Maness and Sam Freeman helped pull thru an exhausted bullpen with each tossing 2 scoreless innings in relief of Wainwright who went 7.

Next up is game 2 of the 4 game series with the Rockies. Tyler Matzek will toe the rubber for the Rox while Michael Wacha will put his perfect 7-0 record on the line.
