Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

Spring Training has ended and the final roster for the 2017 opening day is out:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing

    Few things:

Tyler White won the backup 1st Base/3rd Base job, he will be playing 3rd base against lefty pitchers and will be backup 1st base.

A.J. Reed won the starter 1st Base job and will be an everyday player.

Colin Moran won starting 3rd Base job and will start against right handed pitchers.

Jake Marisnick is on the roster for opening day but boy did Andrew Aplin come after this job he was very good in spring training and may get called up at some point. Marisnick's role is basically just a pinch runner but I may be willing to let go of that.

He could also potentially take White's job once Bregman is ready to go.

I anticipate Alex Bregman to be ready within a month. He played decent in spring training but I dont want to rush him up and Moran played very well.

Opening day will be against the St Louis Cardinals and Michael Wacha.

    Opening day lineup:
    2B Jose Altuve
    CF Carlos Gomez
    SS Carlos Correa
    LF Evan Gattis
    RF George Springer
    C Stephen Vogt
    DH Colby Rasmus
    3B Colin Moran
    1B A.J. Reed

Dallas Keuchel will get the start despite Lance McCullers being unstoppable in Spring Training. We basically have two Ace's on the team (Both of which have won a Cy Young in the past 2 years).

@TarHeelPhenom, I am playing with the Braves as well. I just completed the first series of 2016 vs.the Marlins. I swept them as well. Keeping Mr. Stanton in the park helped. He has a PVS of 33 or 37, I was able to strike him out 3 times in one game. But I still respected his power with RISP by IBB every time.

Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

I made it past the ASG in my Yankees 'chise. Gardner and Beltran made the game. A-Rod was a big snub as he currently has 26 HRs, one shy of 714. After the ASG, I sold the pieces that I could, as we were 38-50, last in the division by 15.5 games.

Arizona offered me SP Wei-Chung Huang for Nick Swisher, Kirby Yates (sub 3 ERA) and CF Lane Adams, and I accepted.

I sent my favorite Yankee, Brett Gardner, to the Giants for Kyle Crick and Jalen Miller.

I sent Beltran (.295 avg) to the Cardinals for Paul de Jong, Juan Gonzalez and Andrew Morales.

I sent Aroldis Chapman to the Dodgers for Jose de Leon, Andrew Toles, and Cody Bellinger.

I sent Shreve (sub 2.5 ERA) to the Cubs for Eddy Julio Martinez.

I called up Cesar Puello and Donovan Solano, to replace Brett Gardner and Beltran, and Vinnie Pestano joined Chad Green (already up) as pitching reinforccements.

Betances (4.31) and Miller ((5.58 ERA) did not play well enough to be traded.

Our first post-sell off series is at home against the Red Sox, who called up Benitendi and Castillo.

In the first game, A-Rod hit HR 714, which was awesome to see in the game. It broke up Elias's 6.2 inning no hit bid.

Cashner, Hamilton lead the Blue Jays to a game 1 win in the World Series against the Mets. Andrew Cashner had his best outing with that Jays at the perfect time pitching a complete game, shutout. He allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and struck out 9 on 100 pitches.

Josh Hamilton..... Yes that's right Hamilton. He was acquired in the RA Dickey trade so the Jays could get Chi Chi Gonzalez. He was a throw in and he has been arguably the best Jays hitter this post season. In this game he hit 2 homers and a double going 3/3 with 3-RBI. Bautista also hit a 2 run HR and Donaldson had an RBI single to cap off a 6-0 win.

Harvey was hit around allowing 5 runs on 10 hits I. 4.1 innings. Aaron Sanchez will take on Noah Synderggard in game 2!

2021 (Year 7) Concludes With Thrilling
                Fall Classic Finish

Game 5 - Tillman took the mound and was strong. He nearly finished off a complete game, but settled for 8 2/3 innings with 3 runs allowed and 14 strikeouts. Leone got the last out for his 3rd postseason save.

No big offensive performance but a run here and a run there leading to a 5-3 win.

Game 6 - The O's didn't go down without a fight. Back at home, they were bolstered by their avid fans...and the performance of Wright on the mound. He shut down the Marlins offense for the most part - the lack of a big performer coming back to bite them.

Meanwhile, Clay Huff's postseason struggles continued as he gave up 5 runs, three of them on a 3-run HR by Smoak. Once again, the series was tied and Game 7 would decide it all.

Game 7 - The bats showed up for the Marlins this time. Chris Taylor had 3 RBI, Christian Yelich had 2. The pitching, though, was a nightmare for 7 innings for both teams. Gausman gave up 6 runs in 3 2/3 innings, but the O's bullpen settled things down.

Heredia gave up 5 runs (4 earned), and the Marlins had an 7-5 lead when he left.

Bruce Rondon again coughed up a big, lead-blowing hit. Crook came through for the O's with a bases-clearing, 3-run double to give the O's an 8-7 lead.

The Marlins were down to their final 3 outs.

McFarland started things with a PH single. Tim Anderson flew out. Mattingly then put Josh Hart in and put the bunt on with Taylor - which was successful. Hart was in scoring position with 2 outs. It was up to Yelich, who's had a postseason to forget so far.

But he delivered a single to right field. Hart rounded 3rd and wasn't stopping. The throw was a good one, but Hart's speed was too much and he got in just in time to tie the game and keep the Marlins alive.

The game would need extra innings...and more then just a couple. Everett Hessman was a hero, going 4 tough innings for a beleaguered bullpen. The Marlins finally broke through in the 13th inning to take a 9-8 lead. Leone shut the door in the bottom of the 13th and the Marlins became World Series Champions.

                  2021-2022 Offseason Begins

While the players are celebrating a campaign that ended with final victory, the front office has to look ahead towards trying to keep the squad together and looking back over what happened during the season.

That work begins now with the hopes of the 2022 Marlins being able to repeat their success.

                  Notable Retirements:

1B Albert Pujols (PIT) - sure HOF career, over 600 HR
RP Antonio Bastardo (PHI) - surprised...he still had game left
C Brian McCann (KC) - 317 career HR
SPs Jameson Taillon, Kyle Zimmer, Archie Bradley (FA) - 3 pitchers in their prime that probably would be sought after, but they are gone now.

                  Hall of Famers:

                  1B Albert Pujols - 10444 AB, 3140 H, 621 HR, 1938 RBI, 96 SB, .301 AVG

                  Marlins Situation:

Don Mattingly will need to hire a new staff. Pretty much everyone except his hitting coach has either retired (in the case of Buck Schowalter) or their contracts ran out.

The Marlins will have some choices to make. Of course, Boeve will be given arbitration while the team tries, once again, to lock up their ace.

Bo Winter, the rapidly improving young stud, will also be a lock-up target. Moses Bartlett and Tommy Cruz will get arbitration and Cruz might get a long-term contract of some sort.

Bruce Rondon and Leonel Campos, two relievers, might not be getting arbitration. Matt Stites definitely will not. Rondon would be more likely to be retained and then probably gone next season as a free agent. Campos struggled, and, especially considering his age, he might not get a tender.

Russell Parrott and Clay Huff are two that will present dilemmas. Parrott is a great bat to have around, crushes LHP and has improved vs RHP. He's arguably good enough to be an everyday option. Of course, Chris Davis is showing no signs of a slowing bat, even at 35 years old. Davis stroked 47 HR last season and is just 10 away from 500 for his career.

Can the Marlins afford to keep both and can they keep both happy? Neither was too thrilled about the platoon situation.

Clay Huff struggled mightily in the playoffs, but he's been steady as a rock during the regular season. He posted a 3.08 ERA last season in 220 innings of work.

Huff's arbitration number is estimating at around $5 million. That might not be too bad for the team to handle, especially if the organization is confident that Huff really is capable of keeping up with what he's been producing. Parrott's is unbelievably low and it's hard to see the arbitrator siding with that. The Marlins might submit a number that's higher, but still easy to handle and hope for the best.

                  Prospects Report:

SP Andres Ordonez, one of the top 50 prospects in the game, looks ready to go, which might complicate matters this offseason. Ordonez is a control pitcher and that's starting to show up in his skills. He also has five pitches, so plenty of ways to change speeds.

SP Robinson Mota, another top 50 prospect, was a slow grower but then accelerated this season. He's more like Clay Huff, except a hard thrower. He uses a power sinker and throws three kinds of fastballs. Command is his big issue, but he's closing in on maybe a bullpen role if nothing else.

OF Arturo Gonzalez is another that might be ready for major league duty. It looks like he might push gamer veteran Eric Young, Jr. off the roster. Arturo can play all outfield positions with a good arm and excellent range. He might be a bit erratic, though, prone to some odd errors at times. Hard to picture him not with the big club, though.

IF Patrick Brandt is a versatile utility type. The question with him is his ability to hit vs RHP. He has a chance to make it up as a bench player. His defense is strong, he can steal bases and run well, and should hit well enough to be used as a sub often and a pinch hitter. The fact he can play 1B might make Parrott expendable unless Davis loses his luster quickly in the coming season.

IF/OF Jay Craft - talk about versatile, he can play 2B, 3B, SS, and all OF positions. He has the arm for all of those positions as well and his range should be at least average, if not a notch better. He can do a lot of things well, though hitting is his weakest tool right now. He's getting there, though. A good spring would do wonders for his stock as his development has been slightly slow.

Awesome job on your franchise KB, it's been really cool to follow along with everything through your postseason run and now into the offseason. I actually just decided to start a Miami franchise and plan to put some work into it to get it caught up. But with my Cubs Chise. I think Miami has a lot of talent, but it'll be a good challenge to make a postseason run having to go through The Mets and Nats as well as the Cubs, Giants, Dodgers, Piarates and Cards.

I had a few questions that I'm not sure if you answered already. Did you trade and/or lose Fernandez and Stanton during the years? I haven't seen them mentioned. Also, is this freak show pitcher Boeve of yours a player you drafted or was he created?

Fernandez left via free agency a last year (this is a franchise that started in MLB14, and he left during MLB15 when I was in year 6). We tried to extend him during the exclusive period, but he rejected. We tried to sign him on the open market. He rejected. He went 22-4 with a 1.93 ERA after having back-to-back seasons cut short with SEI.

He signed with the D-backs for about $28 M average salary (he'll mak a whopping $34 M in his final year). The D-backs ended up in last place (Jose went 9-16, 2.60 ERA)

Stanton left via trade to try the Jurrickson Profar experiment since I needed a SS. Jose Campos (draftee), the current SS, was playing 3B at the time and Chris Taylor blossomed as a 2B so he's been a fixture there. Stanton was doing horribly so I pulled the trigger on the deal.

Turns out Stanton found his stroke (the Yankees traded for him) while Profar was decent and then wanted $29 M/yr, to which I said....

So that trade left me with not a whole lot.

As for Damian Boeve, he was my first draftee. Marlins had a high pick in MLB14 and Boeve was one of the blue chip prospects. Teams passed on him, probably because he looked a little raw, but I snapped him up. He took off in the next season (first in the organization) and developed a NASTY fastball (velocity improved to 99), a couple years later I put in him in the rotation - he kept taking off, steadily climbing up the roster list. The rest is history.

Haha that's great man. Who the hell did Profar think he was? Took some balls to move Stanton, I like the long ball too much I don't think I could lol. That's awesome how that kid turned out for you tho and I bet Jose was kicking himself for missing out on another championship run.

Yeah, I like having the HR threat in the middle of the lineup, so it took some doing. It's okay that the trade was a total fail...I signed Bryce Harper the next season. Hello, my new right fielder! I just wish he had this year's ratings vs LHP as a base back then...if only.

And Profar...he wasn't just like that on me. He went the whole offseason wanting $27-29M/yr. He went unsigned. He disappeared somewhere - maybe retired in shame.

I love Boeve's story. What's sad is they locked movement and velocity in development this year (it seems?) so I'll never get another Boeve unless I draft a 90+ velocity kid or trade for one of those older-game prospects that blossomed before I carried over. So sad, but it makes me want to keep him all the more!

Yea I guess with Harper+Davis you don't have a problem hitting HR!

I'm just a few games in so far, but I love the way this team is loaded with talent in their early to late twenties. I made two moves to start the season, one via trade and one internally and I'm happy with both of them already.

I traded Wei-Yin Chen(82 OVR/since I can't stand his slow wind up lol) to he Pirates for Francisco Liriano(82 OVR) and a 20 y/o LH B-rated power hitting first baseman. Liriano is more of a strikeout guy which I prefer and his delivery is 10x faster. I have him under contract through next season. He's two years older then Chen, but I was fine with that since the rest of my staff is young, plus the first basemen looks like he could fight for a backup spot next season if he does well in triple A this year.

The other move was I made Flamethrower Carter Capps my closer and moved Ramos into the setup role. I prefer to have a guy who can bring 98+ in my closer roll and Ramos has nasty stuff and makes a great setup guy. They both have already been used twice and did great.

Fernandez is so nasty with his huge fastball and then one of the sickest curves in the game. He has to be one of, if not my favorite starter to use in the game. I'd also like to say that Bour is a beast from the left side and having him protecting Stanton should be huge. I can see the two of them hitting 100+ HR together.
