Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

The Blue Jays are one game away from a World Series! What a season this has been. The Jays struggled for the first half of the season, finding themselves up to 8 games back for the division in a hard battle with up to 6 teams for the final wild card spot. Then a couple of big moves by management in a win now, or all in mode started a fire under the team. They had amazing months of August and September and continued rolling into October. They found themselves down twice against Boston in a 5-game series and came back both times to avoid elimination twice. Next, they finished off Texas relatively easy and now they are up a cozy 3-0 against the Mets.

This game was a little different than the last 2 shutout games. Estrada took the mound for Toronto against NL Cy Young award winner Jacob DeGrom. DeGrom allowed 2 runs in the first inning off of a Encarnacion 2-run HR. This was his 2nd in as many games and has finally come to life. The Mets would chip away over 5 innings to tie it 2-2. In the 7th, Walters and Blackmon would hit RBI singles after a bottom of the order rally. Bautista would cap it with a RBI double, 5-2 Jays.

JA Happ could not hold the lead. He allowed 3 runs to score (1 was Estrada's) in the bottom of the 7th to allow the game to tie 5-5. Donaldson committed a brutal error and Martin allowed a past ball to score the tying run and momentum was on the Mets side.

The game went all the way to the 10th as neither bullpen wanted to be the reason for the loss. Finally in the top of the 10th, Tulo smashed a 2-run shot off of Jeremy Blevins to give Toronto the 7-5 lead. Storen would close out the 10th and the Jays are up 3-0!!

Game 4 will be set in New York where AL MVP Marcus Stroman takes on Zach Wheeler. Stroman hopes to cap an amazing year with a World Series win!

    Stay tuned!

      Marlins Land Javier Baez

Usually not one to make a big splash in free agency, the team took the plunge and landed star infielder Javier Baez in a 5-year deal worth $125.6 million and a player option.

"With the Mets landing star 3B Garin Cecchini and the Nats picking up Sano, we felt we couldn't just stand idly by. Those two, especially the Mets, will be challengers to us in the coming season, so we need to keep the pace as best we can, "the Marlins GM commented.

Baez will probably stick at 2B. Taylor then moves to SS where he began, and Campos returns to his "supersub" type role with his ability to give time off at 1B, 2B, SS, LF and RF.

2B Tim Anderson was put on optional waivers to make room (cleared). The Marlins will need to find another roster spot...mostly like Josh Hart as he has options left and Arturo Gonzalez will be getting a shot for outfield depth.

In other news, the Yankees have been making massive moves to improve their roster. They signed stud pitcher Danny Salazar (91) to go with Ryne Haisten (97) and Taijuan Walker (96), both studs in their own right. They also brought Ivan Nova (87) back, still strong at 35, and Zach Lee (80) as well. Their pitching staff looks to be as stacked as the Dodgers and Giants at this point.

The Indians added to their staff as well, picking up Raul Alcantara (83) to go with their pick up Taylor Guerreri (91) earlier.

Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

Can anyone tell me why this game keeps sending my pitcher down on its own? I'm 8 games into year 2 with playing 1 simming 3 days and every single time I've simmed the next 3 days it sends him down. It's already used all 3 of his options now and he still hasn't pitched an inning two weeks into the year.

Everything is set to manual and it hasn't done this with any other player.

          2022 Dawns

The 2022 baseball season is about to begin and here's how the Marlins enter Spring Training:

          Last year's stats in parentheses.

          Projected Rotation
          1. Damian Boeve (21-5, 1.76 ERA, 251 IP, 337 K)
          2. Luis Heredia (10-3, 3.36 ERA, 136 IP, 159 K)
          3. Clay Huff (19-6, 3.08 ERA, 222 IP, 114 K)
          4. Moses Bartlett (9-6, 2.80 ERA, 147 IP, 121 K)
          5. Andres Ordonez (Rookie)

Overall, the rotation seems solid, but most of the pitches had their rough spots, aside from Boeve. Bartlett was demoted for part of 2021 and then came back strong after being recalled. Huff is known to having horrible outings at times, and Ordonez is an unknown.

          Projected Bullpen:
          LR
          Robinson Mota (Rookie)
[Potential position contender: Will Bullock, 3-1, 5.46 ERA]

          MR
          Curtis Anders (11-4, 3.26 ERA, 88 IP, 99 K)
          Everett Hessman (2-3, 3.38 ERA, 47 IP, 51 K)
[Potential position contender: Boone Hall - rookie...at 33!]

          SU
          Ozzie Luis (Rookie)
          Ken DiMaggio (6-11, 1 Sv, 3.00 ERA, 99 IP, 116 K [with O's last season])

          CL
          Kevin Yaeger (Rookie)

The bullpen is one big question mark this year. Leone's departure will have the Marlins again looking for someone to take the closer role. Rondon and Campos's departure leaves the setup role bare, too. The acquisition of Ken DiMaggio could be big here. Curtis Anders wants to close, and he might get his shot, though he was highly valuable in the middle innings. He is probably the team's best reliever right now.

          Projected Lineup

          1. R SS Chris Taylor (481 AB, .254, 4 HR, 31 RBI, 32 SB)
          2. L LF Christian Yelich (558 AB, .321, 7 HR, 58 RBI, 14 SB)
          3. R 2B Javier Baez (389 AB, .265, 17 HR, 64 RBI, 14 SB - with STL last season)
          4. L RF Bryce Harper (505 AB, .305, 31 HR, 94 RBI, 12 SB) [vsL L Arturo Gonzalez - Rookie]
          5. S CF Bo Winter (569 AB, .304, 41 HR, 100 RBI, 16 SB)
          6. L 1B Chris Davis (501 AB, .297, 47 HR, 124 RBI) [vsL R Russell Parrott - 201 AB, .313, 17 HR, 41 RBI, 8 SB)
          7. R 3B Stan Brito (529 AB, .212, 27 HR, 82 RBI, 13 SB)
          8. S C Tommy Cruz (452 AB, .270, 14 HR, 55 RBI, 16 SB)
          [Pitcher Slot]

          Projected Bench (vs RHP)
          RHB C Andrew Susac (99 AB, .253, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 1 SB)
          RHB IF/OF Jose Campos (462 AB, .236, 16 HR, 54 RBI, 1 SB)
          LHB OF Arturo Gonzalez (Rookie)
          RHB 1B Russell Parrott (201 AB, .313, 17 HR, 41 RBI, 8 SB)
RHB IF Les Carlyle (44 AB, .250, 0 HR, 4 RBI, 2 SB)
RHB IF Tim Anderson (113 AB, .274, 1 HR, 12 RBI, 2 SB)

          Position contenders:
SHB 2B/SS Jesmuel Valentin - Rookie

SHB IF Niko Goodrum (79 AB, .152, 1 HR, 10 RBI, 2 SB)
LHB IF Fernando Abreu (99 AB, .162, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 5 SB)
LHB OF Josh Hart (249 AB, .257, 10 HR, 34 RBI, 10 SB)

The lineup could be a very dangerous one if all the pieces fit and the personalities get along. It is largely set with no position battles expected in the starting lineups.

The bench could be hotly contested, by contrast. Josh Hart in particular is expected to compete hard for his roster spot. Jesmuel Valentin quietly has come along as a contact hitter and might could make the roster as a PH specialist, much like how Darryl McFarland was used last season. It won't be easy for him, though.

Campos, Gonzalez, Parrott, and Susac are the most secure in their spots. The team hopes Campos will hit closer to what scouts think he is capable off away from the grind of playing every day as some think he just wore down frequently as the year went on.

Synposis: Overall, the Marlins should be a very competitive ballclub again this year, and anything short of a deep playoff run will be looked upon as a disappointment.

That said, there's questions that need to be answered. How will the bullpen shake out? Can they find their roles and their footing? Is the lineup as potent as it appears on paper? Can Chris Taylor regain his form, and if not, what is the plan?

          Over/Under Wins: Over 93, Under 102.

THE BLUE JAYS ARE WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS!

After over 200 games played, I have finally won my first World Series. It comes off of one of the best games I have ever played on The Show.

The Mets got to Stroman early, who didn't get out of the first inning. Wright doubled and scored Conforto, Duda hit a 2-run shot, and walker hit a 2-run shot to make it 5-0 Mets. The Jays would chip away in the 2nd and 3rd as Encarnacion would hit a solo HR and next inning Blackmon hit a solo shot as well. In inning 6, the Mets went up 6-2 with a De Aza sacrifice fly. Also in the 6th, Martin hit an RBI single and Zach Walters smashed a 2-run HR off of Wheeler to chase him from the game, 6-5 Mets.

In the 8th, with a man on 1st and 2nd with 1 out, Devon Travis hit a single off the 3rd base bag to score a run and tie the game! The Jays came back all the way from 5-0 and 6-2. This game would take a crazy 13 innings to settle. In the top of the 13th Travis came through again hitting a double to score Josh Hamilton. Susac came in as a pinch hitter and hit a sacrifice fly to make it 8-6. Storen would come in and save another game and the Jays will celebrate on the field taking the World Series in four games!

Jose Bautista was named the playoff MVP, while Troy Tulowitzki was named the WS MVP. Bautista went .415 with 3 homers and 12 RBI in the playoffs, while Tulo hit .421 in the WS with a homer and 4 RBI, including the winning HR in game three and some big hits in game four.

Notable retired players include Tony Gwynn Jr, Radhames Liz, Joe Nathan, Dan Uggla (All Blue Jays). David Ortiz, Greg Bird (Injury!), Ichiro, David Murphy, Tim Lincecum, Joel Peralta, Mark Buehrle, RA Dickey, Chris Giminez (Injury), Kyle Lohse, Cliff Lee, Bartolo Colon, Justin Masterson, Alex Castellanos (injury), Everth Cabrera, Gary Brown (Injury).

Stay Tuned for a Blue Jays Offseason plan. It will be busy and the team expects a very high turnover rate this offseason due to the amount of expiring players!

Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

PS: Bautista and EE both have qualifying offers of 1yr/16 mil. I don't want to sign them for next year at that price because there are other guys I would rather re sign. Will they likely accept that offer? Or will they decline and head to FA?

              Thanks!

It depends, but what I would do is see what they actually want (as if you were going to sign an extension). If that value (the extension value) is far above the Q offer, then they probably will reject.

That's what happened to me with Jose Fernandez. I tried to make an extension offer, gave a Q offer, and he turned both down and went to FA. (He wanted over $20 M a year and the Q offer was like $15 M or such)

I've seen a player reject a qualifying offer for less money per year but a longer deal. After I won the WS, I didn't want to re-sign Jansen for more than 2 years, so I tendered him a QA and then offered a 2 year deal for $12M/yr. He wound up taking a 4-5 year deal for less than the QA amount but more than my 2-year offer.

So I think players might reject a QA for longer-term deals, which means it might be smart to offer the QA to players whom you know somebody will pay a bad contract to obtain, such as Jansen, who had a 93 OVR rating. That way, you'll at least get draft compensation.

Re: MLB 16 Franchise Progress Thread

Been a bit since I updated my slowly but surely progressing franchise. I, WHite Sox, am in the BLue Jays series early in the year. I have only 2 losses so far both of which came against the Angels in which we split the series.

I then swept the Rangers and just finished game 1 of the 3 game series against the Blue Jays. First off man their lineup is loaded but game 1 saw Sale on the mound.

I was dealing but my offense was pathetic. I could not score and was getting upset with how man well timed swings just flying out. Well I kind of said "whatever" late in the game. It was still 0-0 going into the 9th. Sale was at 95 pitches and I had 17 or so strikeouts and was in the zone. I had the pen warming but decided to keep Sale in and got out of the 9th and was at 18 strikeouts. Should have been more but Ump screwed me twice big time. Against Bautista I had 2 calls clearly in the zone called balls and he drew a walk.

Well came the 10th and I was mad and not clearly thinking straight, or was I?, and just kept Sale in despite being tired, at 115 pitches and zero energy. I actually made it through the inning, with a runner on, and got 1 more strikeout to make it 19. 135 pitches folks!

Top of the 11th I got a guy on and a huge 2 run homer from Lawrie. I of course brought in Robertson in the bottom of the 11th for the save.

Don't think I will ever try that managing style again....

Chalk it up to Sale pulling a Pedro Martinez and arguing to stay in the game...and you let him.

Of course, unlike Pedro, Sale kept dealing for you. What an outing!

Made a franchise where I completely rebuilt my Yanks. Aaron Judge turns into a monster. I've got this stud 94 OVR SS named Julio Mitre, a former 3rd Overall pick. & this awesome player named Jeff Peck, former 3rd round pick drafted at 23 years old with 79 potential. He's turned into a Joey Gallo type of beast, 52-48 contact, 98/81 power. vs righties/lefties. 46/55 vision/discipline, so he really fits the mold of 50 HR threat alongside 200 K's lol. Had a .255 / 30 hrs / 70rbi rookie season, won ROTY (age 26, I sim a lot)

The Twins also have this STUD first basemen named Juan Olivo...dude is the 2nd coming of Pujols I kid you not, he's 25 & already has 193 bombs under his belt....along with a .269 47HR 116 RBI MVP season...99 power vs rightes, 70/70+ vs Lefties, & has 99 potential... Beast

Overall, the Jays have seen a major turnover from their World Series championship team. First off the team kept Playoff MVP Jose Bautista and let EE walk. Bautista will be with the team for the next two years. The team also lost Brett Cecil who picked a much lower offer from the Cubs over re-signing with Toronto. These losses were replaced by a trade with Oakland which saw Josh Reddick and Sean Doolittle come to Toronto. Reddick will play RF and bat 5th, while Doolittle will play a set-up role.

Also returning, was close Drew Storen who saved over 50 games in the regular season and was lights out in the playoffs. The team got him for a team friendly 3.2 mil. The team also grabbed a few low key signings to replace the rest such as Angel Pagan, Carlos Beltran, Jimmy Paredes, Eugenio Suarez, Marwin Gonzalez and Jared Weaver. Here is a look at the position battles going into ST:

C: Martin. Backups: Susac, Tony Sanchez, Austin Romine
1B: Vogelbach, Susac, Montero, Alex Dickerson, Jesus Aguilar, Ryan Howard, Beltran
2B: Walters, Suarez, Paredes, Gonzalez, Goins, Dietrich
                            3B: Donaldson
                            SS: Tulowitzki
                            LF: Hamilton, Smith Jr. Rua
                            CF: Pagan, Pillar, Almonte, Alford
                            RF: Reddick, Bautista, Beltran
                            DH: Bautista, Beltran, Paredes
SP: Stroman, Sanchez, Estrada, Weaver, Chi Chi, Happ, Hollon, Harris
RP: Storen, Osuna, Doolittle, Grilli, Vincent, Crockett, Contreras, Black

It looks like most of the team is set in stone, but there will be some key position battles. 1B and 2B will be Vogelbach and Walters to loose but they have some stiff competition. Some of these signings will have to provide depth in the minors in case of injury because the team will only carry 4 bench bats. It will be interesting to see which players can stand out in Spring Training!

Spring Training has come to an end and the position battles largely ended up in draws.

Robinson Mota struggled out of the bullpen, but so did potential option Will Bullock. Tyler Kolek also got some looks, but he still continues to struggle with command, and it's still being an issue for him.

Ozzie Luis had an exceptional spring, and any concerns about got played down with his performance. He will certainly be in the bullpen. Boone Hall also wants a spot, and his performance clearly bested veteran Ken DiMaggio's.

They way it looks now, Mota is out of a spot. Luis will move to long relief. That opens a spot for Boone Hall to continue showing if he can keep it going. Curtis Anders will move to setup.

Mota will have to keep improving in AAA and try to work his way back into the picture. The Marlins remain high on him, so he'll have ample chances going forward if he can prove ready for them. The same could be said for Will Bullock. Tyler Kolek? The Marlins are more mixed on his disappointing development.

Kevin Yaeger locks up the closer spot. The rookie was lights out all spring with all his chances and he played above what his grades might indicate.

This means the Marlins will start by carrying 12 pitchers. Generally, the team works with 11, but Mattingly will start with this staff and see how it goes.

The "extra" pitcher tightened the screws on the bench. This ultimately forced a tough decision between Niko Goodrum and Jesmuel Valentin. In the end, Valentin won out in what some sources called "an intense discussion" within the organization.

Niko in particular didn't seem very pleased either, saying that "it's unbelievable that they are making this decision" and that "they hold last season against me but then replace me with a guy who they've never even seen play at this level until now".

For the spring, the Marlins posted a 17-12 record. That would be good enough for 94 wins in the regular season. If that is how the season plays out, it might get "interesting" for the squad.
"Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18

The Phillies currently sit atop the NL East with a record of 22-14 through the second week of May. After starting the month losing 3 out of 4 to the Cardinals, the Phillies proceeded to sweep the Marlins, take 2 of 3 from the Braves and have won the first game of a 3 game series with the Reds.

The Phillies latest victory was a back and forth battle that ended with a score of 6-5. Phillies got some big time clutch hitting in this game. Odubel Herrera and Cesar Hernandez are finally beginning to heat up a bit as well.

In injury news, Carlos Ruiz will be out 3-4 weeks after spraining a ligament in his knee diving back to first base. Catcher/1st Basemen J.P. Arencibia has been called up from Triple-A to take his place on the roster. Arencibia had been hitting in the .230 range with 2 home runs and 14 RBI in Triple-A. This move gives the Phillies a legit power option off the bench and in spot starts.
