Appreciate the explanation but please remember that based on settings or devices being used the page number for the post could vastly vary.

For me, this thread is only two pages long. Giving the post number is always the best way to go.

Hmm. Good point. Been here all this time and didn't realize you could change that lol.

      Edited it to reflect it.

1440p on a 1080p tv. How is that supposed to look better than the 1080p mode ( high framerate) ?
If you use the pro with a 1080p tv, it seems to me that the obvious choice is the HFR option.

Depends. If HFR lowers resolution to achieve that framerate (say, 720p as an example), some might still opt for the choice that keeps the best possible graphics quality (even if their TV can't display the full benefits of being above 1080p).

Personally I'm all about getting the highest framerate possible so I'd likely play in HFR on my 1080p regardless.

It downsamples the 1440p image on your 1080p display. Downsampling on 1080p displays provides a crisper, cleaner image. Closest thing to high quality AA that consoles have had.

As far as the best option, it's subjective. Some gamers prefer framerate, some prefer the image quality. It's awesome that a lot of games on the Pro offer these choices

I'm not sure I understand. Pretty sure you can't have 1440p on a 1080p tv.

But they didn't mention if they are using downsampling. Which would make the game look better on a 1080p set. (I think)

But if not, I think you're right about going with high framerate mode on a 1080p set.

Ugh. I have a Pro and 4K but no HDR. (Bought it before HDR became a thing). I wonder if I will get any benefit graphically.

The PS4 Pro will always downsample whatvever the internal rendering is on 1080p displays unless devs specifically disable that feature. Only game I know of that launched with Pro support that didn't have downsampling is Dishonored 2. A couple games got post-launch Pro patches that didn't offer downsampling on 1080p displays, like Smite and TLOU:R, but it's a pretty minute exception.

I'm glad that SCEA is following in the footsteps of some other studios as far as offering a Pro Mode option to suit everybody

                    Yes. Yes you will.

HDR and resolution boosts are separate benefits

                      I see.
I guess, we'll have to test it to see if the the downsampling "upgrade" is really worth it on a 1080p tv.

Anyway if I get the Pro I'm sure I will prefer the HFR option (unless it's not capped and we end up with framerate fluctuations even more noticeable)

Like I said earlier, I wish they would have went with 2160p(checkerboard) it would have left headroom for framerate. Horizon Zero Dawn made me a believer in 2160p(CB) because it is 95% 4k. It hurt my soul when he said 4K but Slower.

gotcha. I'm still learning about all the 4K intricacies.

Titanfall 2 and Deus Ex are two games that show marked improvements on 1080p displays but some games, at least to my eyes, are barely noticeably improved. It definitely varies (for 1080p displays).

So yeah we will just have to wait and see. I'll definitely be happy to try each mode for a few games and decide which works best for me

Maybe not the best example, it is the quickest one I could pull up, but here is an example of what a downsampled image can offer. Compare the jaggies (aliasing) on the objects in the environment between the two pictures (view in full size)

This is just an example of one game. Not indicative necessarily of what The Show will offer 1080p displays

                              Edit

Also, here is a list on NeoGAF of every PS4 Pro supported game and what benefits they offer if you wanted to compare notes and learn more about how games utilize the Pro in different ways

I agree with you. They should've given us a checkerboard 4k and keep the framerate up if native 4k was going to give us a lower framerate IMO.
