re: MLB The Show 17 Impressions

Things I've noticed so far in RttS:

The commentary with Harold Reynolds is awesome. He does a terrific job of bringing up little nuggets. I've played a four game series at the beginning of the year and he has yet to repeat himself with anything. A welcomed addition.

The graphics with HDR + HFR makes the game look so, so good. It's like coming from gameboy color to Vita. Ok, perhaps an over exaggeration but yea. It looks that good.

Matt finally mentions the first HR of the year for a player. In previous years, he would not mention the number of the HR until he hit no. 5.

The ball slice is real. The physics is top notch.

    Jr's stance is spot on.

After a full game my overall impression is that my marriage is in trouble. Lol

re: MLB The Show 17 Impressions

        My entirely-too-early first impressions:

Oh my God, that intro. Kinda tore me up right from the start with Harry's stretch and then the feels just persisted throughout because I knew where it would ultimately end up - at last October/November.

Enhanced Visuals is definitely selectable on a 1080p, although I'll leave it to the graphics gurus to tell if there's really a image quality benefit to it. Framerate is my department.

On on that note...my most important first impression is this. Last year, my first game was spent wondering if something was wrong in my settings, trying to figure out why the game seemed so choppy during pitching and batting. This year? The only thing I need to worry about is baseball, because the framerate in gameplay is absolutely spotless. And here's the kicker - I'm not even on High Frame Rate mode yet - I was planning to switch off enhanced about halfway through my first game. The cutscenes do slow down similar to last year, but gameplay is rock solid. Based on what I've seen from Millennium's stream, the game might not drop a frame once I get into High Framerate Mode. The Pro hype is real, but if the enhanced visuals setting is giving me this smooth a game, I don't imagine regular PS4 users will have anything to worry about either. So as much criticism as I gave SCEA over the slow framerate last year, I'm going to give them all the credit in the world for improving it for '17. It's great that the feedback was heard.

Most people have already said everything I could say (and the ball physics are definitely the real deal), but I did want to point out there's a change to analog fielding - it's a much quicker load-up to full power. It's more comparable to the time it takes to reach the green area on button accuracy - which means you can preload later and still get a smooth throw. It really caught me off guard the first time I tried it, but it's definitely a welcome change.

More later - I'm not even halfway through my first game but wanted to share that much.

re: MLB The Show 17 Impressions

Just playing the opening game as it installs.....cubs v Indians....and I'm concerned, but maybe it's not the game. Going to list the issues I've noticed and hopefully someone with knowledge can chime in.

          1) switched from meter pitching to pulse and there is a delay/lag on the pulse meter every couple of pitches
          2) my PlayStation console is humming like a jet engine - may be the issues I'm having with....
          3) frame rate. There is a lag from batted ball fielder cam every bit that I'm pitching. Saw this with 16 too (again, it may be my ps. Not sure why it's humming so loud)
          4) I've hit Kluber 3 times in the leg, hard, yet he's still out there throwing piss-rockets....feel like this goes untouched every year. Either injure the pitcher or fix the up-the-middle hit logic. It can't be a coincidence that I'm hitting it right back through the box this many times a game (would happen in 16 quite often too)
          5) graphically, I still see jaggies around the shadowy areas of the players. Maybe it's my TV? 60" Samsung on game mode, TV is about 6 years old.
          6) may have to mess with sliders/I am playing on dynamic difficulty, but any ball I hit on the nose is an absolute seed that one-hops the ivy. With that said, improved ball physics look good.
          7) the lag...I really hope it's just bc either a) the game is installing still or b) my PS4 is on life-support. Seriously it's humming very loud.
          8) fielding animations are nice, still see some odd DP turns.
          9) one of these days the crew will learn how to have the batters hold on to the bat just a hair longer after a base hit. Lefties tend to just make contact and drop the bat at their feet on certain swings. Also, the bat sticks to the ground after being released. It doesn't naturally roll after being dropped by the hitter
          10) same concept as above. HR hit into the net at wrigley but it didn't really move it just stuck to the net
          11) this song playing on loop is getting annoying

That last one is more of a comment out of frustration. It's just that I see people enjoying this game as much as I should and I don't think it's the game I think I need a new console or an upgraded TV, which I really don't want to shell out for right now.

            • Happy to see no slow mo when leading off from 1st base and Second Base and the pitcher tries to throw you out!

            • Not able to player lock from 1st inning so you will still get dropped off in the game and not know how the CPU scored all those runs. Selecting Player Lock each time from launch pad for 162 games will probably drive me crazy in the end!

            • For the overall defense control while running towards balls, bases and animation movement improvements which feels much more solid when using player lock to play a defensive position SS in my case. I'll take that trade off.

            • No player interaction Hi Fives for moments like moving a runner over or scoring behind another runner. Outside of home run celebrations.

•*SDS should note that the help menus still reference "Manual Catch" and "R2" for diving these are no longer in the game. So might want to consider removing it.

SDS thanks for all the hard work up until this point I've been around since MLB The Show 13!

I'll check back in around 2019 or 2020 to see where the game is!

            Peace!

            See yah at E3!

Truly an amazing step up from last year in all regards. This game is an absolute beast.

I have to thank everyone at SDS for this gift. I couldn't be happier.

                In my second game,

I had a perfect game on HOF difficulty with Clayton Kershaw against the Cubs. And with 2 outs in the 9th inning, Javier Baez pinch hit, and lined a single to left field on an inside fastball.

2 outs in the 9th inning.

I've still never thrown a perfect game or no hitter in any baseball game. I don't how i'm going to sleep tonight.

On another note, the graphics in this game are amazing, it truly is next gen, the player models took a huge leap this year.

Its a shame it took 4 years but this game has finally made the leap to next gen and been set free of its PS3 shaped shackles.

locked 60 fps is just amazing.

Used quick manage for the first time and thought i'd hate it because i generally play every game but whoaaa. Kinda like OOTP minus the text commentary. I still feel like im somewhat in control of my own destiny. I then can jump in and out as needed easily. I can see this being used lots by myself and maybe i can actually get thru more than one season. Absolute game changer IMO.

Edit.... Game is 2-2 in the 7th so I jump in and hit a 2 run bomb with martin. I can see this as kind of a quick counts feature but instead of at bats, whole games.

re: MLB The Show 17 Impressions

I only played 1 full game with me being the Reds and the CPU being the Cubs. I played the game in Crosley field, and I actually won the game 6-5 in 10 innings. I used dynamic hitting, and all star pitching, with no slider adjustment. I was pleasantly surprised how well I did, for being the 1st time in close to 2 yrs that I had played The Show. I really figured I would struggle even using dynamic hitting, considering I hadnt played in that long, and considering all the pain meds and muscle relaxers they have me on.

In years past I would have had to slow down pitch speed slider all the way to 0 for me to hit as well as I did. So I was shocked when I was able to hit set at 5. I actually think I might try just putting pitching and hitting at all star and give it a go, with as well as I did.

Outside of all that, the game really looks amazing, and Im just using a normal TV and a standard PS4. The commentary has really improved.

I saw Kyle Schwarber misplay a couple balls and commit a error, so fielding on the OF has improved greatly, that you better not have a poor fielder like Schwarber in late with a close game, or he might cause you to loose. I was his poor play in LF that allowed me to actually win the game, because if he hadnt been out there, I would have had atleast 3 less runs. So its nice to know that finally poor fielders will play poorly especially in the OF,, as in years past you hardly ever saw a OF'er misplay a ball.

Ive always loved The Show, and really never had much to complain about with the game each yr, as last yr was the 1st time I didnt buy, only because money was tight for us.

I did notice using quick counts that when a reliever comes in they dont count the pitches the pitches in the quick count, after you throw that 1st pitch, then it counts them from there, but needs looked at patching.

I like the addition of manager decision on if you want a PR in late game situations.

Not that Im a fan of the new rule in baseball with the Intentional walks, but I see that new rule isnt in the game. Not sure if you can patch that in or not. Quite frankly Im not even sure I really want it, as its a stupid rule anyway, that I hope they do away with after this year, when they see it dont save any time with the who new pace of play BS they are pushing.

Overall, Im sure the game has some issues that will need fixed in a patch, what game dont these days, but as usual the game looks great and plays great. Definitely a major step up from what 15 which was the last 1 I played. The lighting with the clouds, and shadows make it looks like you are watching the real thing. Also the crowd reactions seems so much better now too, they seem to really get into it when a critical situation happens, like you would IRL at those moments.

Interested to see if this is used regularly how realistic the stats are over course of the season, I might have to run a prolonged test as I'm interested in this feature to help me try and get through more seasons if it's legit

My first game each year never fails to give me some memorable moments.

I almost went running for the bug thread on this one (and didn't realize there were 2 outs):

So, full disclosure - there were 3 homeruns in this game and all of them went at least 440 feet. With this, plus what i saw in the streams, it's something I'll be keeping an eye on - perhaps the solid hits slider might need to come down because I don't really want to mess with power too much - hit speeds were almost perfect last year and I doubt that's changed. The new physics seem to have really unshackled the fly balls and they are JUMPING this year.

Played an exhibition Rays at the Cubs and usually my first game sees me lose by about 14 runs (also as i skipped 16 and haven't played 15 for a while) but the game was 0-0 and I won it on a solo bomb by Longoria in the bottom of the 13th! Little scare as Rizzo kicked off the bottom of the inning with a double but Colome shut it down.

Couple of things that stood out.
                              • Defence really matters. I brought in Ricky Weeks to play 2B and his 48 defence meant i really had to concentrate on the meter!
                              • My first hit was a broken bat swinging bunt down to 3B but they were playing Rasmus on a hard shift.
                              • I hit a long one to right field and as heyward dived i thought back to previous versions where its almost certainly a catch. Instead it skipped past and died at the wall for a triple.
                              • Hit an absolute laser down the 3rd base line and Bryant made an amazing stop. Whilst it was frustrating it made me smile! A play like that never happens, at least not as smoothly in any other version of the show.
