Re: Official MLB The Show 17 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread
I pretty much am going to use the same strategy for every team.
Rounds 1-25
Get your Major League Team drafted. Starting 9, Starting 5 in the rotation and bullpen and bench.
After that.....I auto pick for each team except mine.
By doing this I can simply draft best player available for a position every team needs in every round to fill that lineup card. It makes it unemotional for me. And it also eliminates that bug the CPU has in year one of carrying no bench.Comment

Re: Official MLB The Show 17 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread
Disclaimer
Year 1 of this franchise was both a success and a failure - Success in the fact that this team is / was extremely fun & failure in the fact that I spent a good part of it messing with the sliders to try to get things a bit more buttoned up. So with that being said, I quick managed the rest of the season and made it all the way to game 7 of the world series, before Justin Verlander gave up 12 runs in the 1st inning, eventually losing to the Mariners. Happy with the sliders, and this teams build, I went through the offseason and have re-arrived at opening day, 2018. Here's the update / outlook on the season:
Off Season In Review
The Pirates ended the season in the worst way possible, getting outclassed in Game 7 of the World Series. The loss is something that will certainly stick with the members of the organization until baseball picks back up. In a season ending press conference, GM Joe Smith summed up the season, and his plans for going forward: "Overall, 2017 was a success, we made it to the final game of the World Series, and unfortunately didn't show up to play. That being said, it took a lot to get to that point, in terms of team performance, and assets - like the prospects we had to give up to get some re-enforcements. Make no mistake about it, we are not planning on going backwards! This is as good a free agent crop as there has been in years, and thanks to the extra revenue we made last year, we plan to be aggressive in both retaining our guys, and going after new blood."
The young GM did not disappoint, with the Pirates being one of the most active teams in the offseason.
Key Losses
CP Glen Perkins - Signed with the Marlins (1 yr / 3.1M)
RP Jerry Blevins - Signed with the Orioles (2yrs / 13.8M)
CF Desmond Jennings - Signed with the Padres (1 yr / 1.9M)
LF Jayson Werth - Remains FA
RF Andre Either - Remains FA
SP Patrick Corbin - Trade (1)
2B Whit Merrifield - Trade (2)
Key Additions
RF Andrew McCutchen - Signed (2 yr - 26.6M)
2B Ian Kinsler - Resigned (1 yr - 14.8M)
RP Jordan Walden - Trade (2)
RP David Phelps - Signed (1 yr - 1.2M)
SP Trevor Cahill - Signed (1 yr - 2.5M)
C John Ryan Murphy - Trade (1) *in AAA
SS Jed Lowrie - Signed (1 yr - 3M)
These are the big "notable" transactions the Pirates made during the offseason. In addition to these, a lot of attention was made in signing veteran pitchers both in relief and starters, to minor league deals in order to compete for the final starter and reliever spots during spring training. With such uncertainty at the back end of the rotation, the Pirates will surely need to call upon their depth throughout the season.

Projected Lineup
2B Ian Kinsler (R) 89 Ovr
RF Andrew McCutchen (R) 89 Ovr
3B Josh Donaldson (R) 95 Ovr
CF Joc Pederson (L) 80 Ovr
SS Trevor Story (R) 82 Ovr
C Blake Swihart (S) 77 Ovr
1B Derek Dietrich (L) 79 Ovr
LF Chris Coghlan (L) 75 Ovr
Bench
C Austin Romine (R) 70 Ovr
SS Jed Lowrie (S) 75 Ovr
SS Eduardo Escobar (S) 69 Ovr
3B Kelly Johnson (L) 66 Ovr
RF Joey Rickard (R) 75 Ovr
Catcher Blake Swihart returns, and will see the lions share of action behind the plate. Swihart is coming off of a year in which he played in 129 games, hitting .253 with 16 HR and 62 RBI. Austin Romine returns to spell Swihart on days he needs rest.
1st Base Dietrich will attempt to prove this year that he can handle more of the work load at 1st. 2017 was a strong season for Dietrich as he hit .269 with 17 HR and 58 RBI over 121 games. Going into the season, the plan is for Dietrich to no longer be in a platoon. Dietrich's goal is to play in 145 games this season.
2nd Base Kinsler went on an absolute tear after coming over to the Pirates in 2017. When he was acquired, Kindler was hitting .204, at the end of the season, Kinsler wound up hitting .263 with 27 HR and 87 RBI out of the lead off spot. The Pirates are expecting production like this over the course of the season if they are to make it back to the playoffs.
3rd Base Josh Donaldson, the bringer of rain, returns after losing his case during arbitration. Some feel that due to the arb loss, this will be Donaldson's last year in Black & Yellow. The Pirates are hoping a repeat performance for the NL's Gold Glover at 3rd base. (.266, 36 HR, 87 RBI)
Short Stop Trevor Story has quickly become one of the faces of the franchise, thanks in part to a year that saw him start the All-Star game, and hit .285 31 HR, and 90 RBI's. Another year like this, and Story will be looking to get PAID - look for the Pirates to extend their young star.
Left Field Chris Coghlan starts the year off as the Left Handed portion of a platoon with Joey Rickard. Coghlan spent 2017 in the Pirates organization, at the AAA level. The plan going forward is to play this platoon, with hopes of 2017 1st Round Draft Pick, Brett Cline, being promoted to the Show by the All Star Break.
Center Field Pederson has teamed up with Trevor Story to give the Pirates a tandem of young stars in the heart of the order. 2017 saw Pederson hit .257 with 34 hr, 86 rbi and swipe 28 bags. A 30/30 season may be in order, after earning a start in the All-Star game last year.
Right Field Long time Pirate, Andrew McCutchen, came back to the Organization after winning the World Series in 2017 with the Mariners. Mccutcheon will bat 2nd for the Pirates, and will hope to repeat on a 2017 season in which he hit .258, 22 HR and 80 RBI.
Bench
The bench looks a little different than it did in 2017. Jed Lowrie was brought in due to his ability to hit from both sides of the plate, and play strong defense throughout the infield. Joey Rickard is the only "Outfielder" on the bench, and will see the lion's share of time spelling the regulars. Eduardo Escobar & Kelly Johnson are the utility players.
Rotation
Justin Verlander, the Goat of the World Series, will lead the Pirates rotation after going 18-8 with a 3.11 era in 2017. Jon Gray moves up a spot in the rotation, after a year that saw the promising right hander go 16-10. Cole Hamels should be a big part of the rotation after earning an all-star bid in 2017 thanks in part to going 16-8 with a 3.13 era. Tom Koehler and Trevor Cahill round out the rotation, but are not certain to end the season in it.
Bullpen Koda Glover will be thrust into the Closers role after a season in which he appeared in 83 games, logging 98 strike outs, and a 4.40 era. Glover's ERA exploded, most likely due to over use at the end of the season, but shouldn't be a concern in his new role. Josh Fields & Brad Hand will team up to set up Glover. Jordan Walden came over via trade during the offseason, and will give the Pirates another power arm in the Pen. 2017 draft pick Brad Jones and his 95 MPH fastball will look to stick after earning a spot on the opening day roster. Joe Blanton returns, and David Phelps won the long man spot during ST. Neither are locks to spend the season on the roster.

Re: Official MLB The Show 17 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread
Well I have been scared out of it seeing that with 30 team control some people have had the draft freeze on them.
I don't want to go through that for hours to have that happens.
This summer I will draft a fresh new team but I plan on using Jethrotulls 1987 90man roster and run a retro 80's fantasy team!!
Will play as the Yankees.
In the meantime I am fully invested in The Matheny Manifesto Year 2.

Re: Official MLB The Show 17 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread
Alright since the rosters dropped yesterday decided to get back to this this year. Had my team last year but got so busy didn't have much time for it. Here is to hoping this year I can play it more.
SO I wanted an NL team. So I took the Dodgers. I already drafted the team. I can't remember but I believe I had the 14th Pick
LineUp
CF Inciarte
2B Hernandez
SS Correra
1B Bird
RF Springer
LF Benintendi
3B Bregman
C Contreras
Bench
C Rupp
UTL Rodriguez
SS Flores

CF Marisnick
Rotation
Syndergaard
Nola
Snell
Taillon
Urias
Bullpen
Edwards Jr
Capps
O'Day
McGee
Diekman
Strop
CP Colome
I did trade for a few of these players due to having extra prospects I was willing to deal. Those players were: Hernandez, Strop, McGee, Marisnick, Rodriguez, Hazelbaker, Springer.
Prospects
SP Glasnow
SP Martes
SP Allard
2B Albies
SS Rodgers
CF Frazier
CF Meadows
RF JudgeComment

Re: Official MLB The Show 17 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread
Forgot to mention that only reason I traded from springer is that Judge is not ready to play so most likely next season I will trade Inciarte and move springer to center and put Judge in RF and Benintendi will be ready to lead off in the batting orderComment

Re: Official MLB The Show 17 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread
So I messed around today with this and wanted to see if I have opportunities for doing things different to promote parity.
I will control one team but for the draft I will draft a 25 player roster for each team.
First I drafted SP and went in order of best available until my team came up, I drafted who I wanted. I did this for all 5 SP for each team.
I struggled with what should be next, RP or CP. the down side is CP there is not much variety, so I could see teams having stronger closers and others stronger bullpens, which I think works.
Next came for what to do next. I first thought just going position by position but after doing that realized I could be stacking rosters with teams in the middle not getting top tier talents.
Am I bets doing best player available but just not doubling up on positions at first. My first test allowed me to get people like Harper, Bryant, and others while other teams didn't get top tier guys, my team felt stacked.
Any other thoughts?Comment

Looking forward to developing this team! The plan going foward is to ease Yasiel Sierra into the starting rotation, depending on performance. I feel like this team has a very solid nucleus, with some key guys locked up long term, a few guys with arb control, and a nice mix of veterans. Can't wait to take on the rays to open the season.

Re: Official MLB The Show 17 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread
Opening day Vs the Padres. I know if this was a regular season game you would be like it's just the Padres and they got their *** kicked, but hey this is a Fantasy Draft team so it was actually a great game.
It was Syndergaard Vs deGrom
Both pitchers pitched great but one had to come out on top and that was Snydergaard who pitched 7 innings of 1 hit ball to get the win. deGrom took the loss giving up 1 run on 8 hits.
1B Greg Bird drove in the only run of the game on an RBI single in the 3rd inning.
Carlos Correa went 2-4 with 2 doubles.
Colome notched his first save of the season.Comment

Re: Official MLB The Show 17 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread
I was gonna do a normal franchise mode this year, but I couldn't bring myself to. Theres just something so satisfying about putting together a team of guys all around the league and watching them grow together.
Here's the team I drafted today that I'm gonna run with. I'm the Mets.
Lineup:
LF Kyle Schwarber (L)
2B Rougned Odor (L)
RF Nelson Cruz (R)
1B Eric Thames (L)
SS Addison Russel (R)
3B Righty, cant quite remember his name
C Blake Swihart (S)
CF Rajai Davis (R)
Pitcher
Rotation:
Chris Sale (L)
Michael Fulmer (R)
Adam Wainwright (R)
Francisco Liriano (L)
Bartolo Colon (R) (I had to)
My closer is Craig Kimbrel, and I have Luis Severino in long relief and spot starting duties. He'll likely have the starting job once someone goes down or if not, definitely by next season.
The team isnt all that great on paper, but thats what I like about it. I have work to do as a GM to make this team a championship team. Whether that means dealing Nelson Cruz at the deadline, or trading my prospects for some help. Only time will tell.Comment

Re: Official MLB The Show 17 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread
Opening day was no disappointment for fans across the league. Unfortunately for Yankees fans, it was as the yanks lost 5-3 in the bottom of the 16th inning.
Marcus stroman was solid, giving up 3 runs over 6 innings. Yasiel Sierra pitched 8 innings of shutout ball in relief, allowing 3 hits while striking out 3 and enducing a ton of ground outs. After an outing like that, Sierra may force the Yankees to thrust him into the rotation sooner than later.
Mike Trout & Michael Brantley each threw a runner out at home.
The big problem for the Yankees was getting runners across the plate, as they let two bases loaded situations go by the wayside. No need to worry long term though. The yanks will look to rebound in game two of the season.Last edited by J_smith2190; 04-12-2017, 07:49 PM.MLB The Show 20

Re: Official MLB The Show 17 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread
Just a quick update on the team two posts up, this game is driving me CRAZY. It almost made me shatter my TV screen with my controller.
THOSE. GUYS. CANT. HIT. ANYTHING
I though I was good at this game. I figured if I drafted a team full of players with middle of the line attributes I'd be able to hit the ball, and still stay competitive. Y'know, win some, lose some, make the playoffs.
I was completely wrong. I'm up to todays date, April 12th. None of my players averages are above .200. My team is dead last in the league in hits, batting average, RBIs, Strikeouts, and probably most other offensive except walks. We have one win, opening day.
You may think thats way too soon to give up, teams get off to slow starts, but my god if you saw me. This game was driving me insane. It seemed every at bat I'd get good timing on pitches right down the middle, and it would almost never result in a solid hit. I don't understand what I can do besides that.
I've decided for my own mental health if I want to play a season I need to get away from this team.
MLB The Show has humbled me today. I'm throwing in the towel and redrafting a team, keeping some sort of consistency by redrafting any players that showed a lick of promise (Schwarber, Chris Sale, Eric Thames). Just needed to vent my frustration here because the way I was losing games it was like the video game became self aware and was teasing me. Better an overly long pointless post on OS than a shattered TV. Rant over.Comment

Re: Official MLB The Show 17 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread
I am really struggling with my approach and building a young team and maybe that's my main issue.
I want a mix of guys that hit for average and maybe can steal some bases combined Edith some power hitters. Do I start with Trout and build around him or go with Harper for a big lefty bat and go from there. I am a Twins fan so I am trying to limit myself to one guy like a Sano or Buxton.
Messing around last night I had Harper, Trea Turner, Cargo, Wieters, Buxton, Story, Yoan Moncada, and Morneau. Any thoughts?Comment

6 Games In: 3-3
After 6 games, the Yankees sit in 3rd place in the NL East. The Yanks lost the first series of the season against the Rays (5-2). The Yankees lost the first game against the Orioles (3-2) before winning the final two games to take the series.
The Yankees bats have largely been silent, although the last 2 games have shown some promise. If the Yankees are going to go anywhere this season, the offense is going to have to start performing closer to it's potential.
Injury
Joe Panik is expected to miss 1-6 days, after straining a muscle in his abdomen while diving for a ball up the middle. In his place, Phil Gosselin & Dustin Ackley will man the Keystone.
Next UpThe Yankees home opener is against the Rays (5-2). Heres a look at the pitching matchups & Tampa's vaunted offense:
GM 1: Steven Matz(L): 1-0 0.00 vs Anthony DeSclafani(R) : 0-0 0.00
GM 2: Hisashi Iwakuma(R): 0-0 3.00 vs Jesse Hahn(R): 0-0 1.80
GM 3: Tyler Wilson(R) 0-1 5.40 vs Chris Tillman(R) 0-0 4.26
Tampa's Lineup
2B Ian Kinsler (R)
CF Dexter Fowler (S)
3B Kris Bryant (R)
SS Trevor Story (R)
DH Victor Martinez (S)
LF Justin Upton (R)
RF Kole Calhoun (L)
C Geovany Soto (R)
1B Matt Dominguez (R)

C Derek Norris (R)
1B Marwin Gonzalez (S)

Re: Official MLB The Show 17 Fantasy Draft Franchise Progress Thread
An interesting and very challenging idea I have for a fantasy draft franchise is taking the Toronto Blue Jays and making it so your first 25 picks have to be players from Canada (I believe Jameson Taillon and Freddie Freeman qualify as half-Canadians so you can include them). Then your next 15 picks have to be players that have played at least one season for the Blue Jays (I believe Bartolo Colon is the last active player to have played for Montreal so you can include him too). Then you can finish out your draft with no Canadian restrictions.Comment
