It's the same when Manager leave a guy in the 5th innings when his pitch count is over 100 and tired, they will leave them in just so they have a chance to get a win.

Like I said wins and saves stats are all for fantasy baseball people. even ERA can be a crap stat too, someone could give up 10 runs but because of a Error it won't count to their ERA, same as when a relief pitcher can give up runs that the starter put on base.

There isn't enough focus on WHIP and OBP stats in the game. which are more important stats.

You're basically admitting that you agree the stat is a problem.

The stat is a problem only because people use it for the wrong reasons. Same goes for SAT scores. That's not the stat's fault. It's a fabrication alongside every other stat in the MLB. I have fabricated my own as well for my softball teams.

In fact, I've had this stance at least as early as six years ago. I believe that the statistic is overrated because I don't think it is used to infer the right thing for managers and how they utilize their bullpen. Nothing wrong with it being an existing stat, though. It's an inanimate object... hell, it's just figurative. People who use it to deem importance are to blame.

EDIT: To answer your question, no I don't think managers would do it if the stat didn't exist. In fact, I think they specifically do it because the stat exists... almost as if to honor it. One could telegraph it if they wanted to.

SECOND EDIT: Now that I think more about it, if you still want to statistically reward a closer for coming in an impact situation and holding the lead, they should make saves and holds a summed statistic, or at least provide value to it. Just like how AVG and OBP both make the limelight (not the most telling stats in the world of course), holds should get about equally as much value at least.

So far I have not seen this sort of problem in any of my MLB 17 games. So far my closer has been brought into 8 games and he has 7 saves. In that other game he did not get the save, it was because he gave up a run to allow the game to be tied going into extra innings and I brought in new relievers after that. Plus yes in at least one of these saves my closer did strike out the side. Not saying there isn't a problem, there very well could be one. I'm just not seeing it ... yet.

Now there is confusion surrounding when saves are awarded mostly on my part because while I have learned a lot about baseball these last five years playing the MLB The Show game, there has been times when I thought a save should have been awarded and wasn't. But that was in past years, not this year's iteration of the game and that confusion could have been just me. If memory serves me correct in past years I had a 4 run lead in the last inning and I have brought my closer into the game with the bases loaded. The closer pitched his way out of the jam without giving up a run, but did not get the save because of the 4 run lead. To me, I would have thought that if the tying run is at the plate and the closer finishes the game with the lead, he should get the save. But this wasn't the case in the game in previous years. Confusion on my part or a bug in the game?

If he enters with the potential tying run on base, up to bat or on deck, yes that should be a save.
