Why is it unrealistic that the Padres would spend $100 million in an off season?

According to this article: SDUT Padres Article
The Padres have committed at least $60 million in international spending and nearly $75 million toward acquisitions in general in 2016 alone.

Sometimes, I need to be reminded that this game is a simulation and it does a great job imitating real life, but sometimes it will have unrealistic outcomes when compared to real life baseball.

I guess I was basing it more off of 25 man payroll this year. Read something that said Kershaw is making more this season $33M? Than the Padres payroll of $29M

I really wish it was clear whether franchise runs better with budgets on or off. This is the only thing keeping me from starting today

Are you controlling all 30 teams?

My biggest fear has always been that if I rolled with budgets off and I didn't very carefully monitor who was offering what guys contracts, that every team would be able to go after big money guys with inflated contracts, something that isn't that common in real life.

With 30 team control, you could keep budgets off and control what teams offered which players contracts and would be able to offer said player a more "realistic" type of deal. If you don't want to do that extra work but still want realistic signings, I think playing with budgets on is more your niche.

Sorry if this has been asked before, just curious to whether choosing to ignore budgets at the start of a franchise was just for your team or If it affected all teams. Was just wondering which was the most popular way everybody did it and which worked best.

Re: Ignore budgets on or off?

If you turn on to ignore budgets, you can sign anyone or trade for anyone, sign coaches and scouts without having budget constraints.

The game still tracks your weekly or monthly budget though so if you go over budget when making transactions, I'm not sure if you will eventually run out of money during the season.

Re: Ignore budgets on or off?

30 team control CPU trades off but I always make deadline deals with all buyers/sellers. Had no issues with budgets outside of certain teams not being able to add a big contract (like the Yankees and Encarnacion for ex). But I'm now entering season 5 and a bunch of studs are still in free agency and 7 or 8 teams are over budget. If I start a new one after the trade deadline I'll be turning budgets off.

So is the general consensus is ignored budgets should be on?

For most full minors rosters, then it's probably a necessary evil (as they tend to have much higher prospect potentials). Otherwise, you'll start having issues with FAs not signing.

If you're using SDS rosters or a custom with potentials more in-line with SDS' paradigm, than I would say no.

I take no chances in it ruining my franchise, so I'm ignoring budgets all day long.

I've turned budgets on once a few years ago...lasted about a month. CPU teams will sign FAs and make trades more frequently in season with them turned off.

I play with Ridin Rosters full minors custom roster. Would you recommend budgets off so I don’t get a load of big names sitting in free agency? Or will it be ok with budgets on?

My suggestion....do a test franchise, set everything to auto for your team and speed through 3-4 seasons and after ST each year, take a look and see what the FAs look like and if they make sense to you. At most, it'll take an hour (probably less) and it can give you peace of mind before investing 100s of hours.
