Re: Show '09 vs. Show' 18

Some fans of this game act like you can't be critical of the game. I remember saying how '17 looked and felt too similar to the last game I played ('15) and some act like I was just making things up.

It's obvious that the lack of competition is a factor here. There are so many things about the game that always feel too similar to years past.

They do a great job capturing the atmosphere and nuances of the sport. Madden doesn't. But Madden actually feel different.

One of the problems is the game of baseball. You have the least amount of control in a baseball game than any other sports game. It's like a bunch of mini games put together. The most control is in fielding. Even then, once you throw, there isn't much else you can do. Once you field it and throw it to a base, you can't catch it. You can't apply a tag. Those are equally important and a part of fielding. You press a button to pitch and wait. You press a button to swing and wait to basically direct traffic around the bases.

Good use of trying to say he's "thinking differently" he's not and people see right through it. There's a reason he created this thread. It'll be the same reason it gets closed eventually.

I'm not going to get into a back and forth here I simply was responding to Bleedings post. If you guys have an issue/guilty conscience with it PM me and we can talk about it. Otherwise carry on fellas..
What's worse is that it seems many people in this thread agree with me. Does that mean every single one of us is talking out of our butts? And does it really matter how old I am? I'm a diehard show fan and I want to see innovation, not stagnation. You don't even stop to realize that it is people like you that ruin this forum because you simply cannot accept that someone's opinion may differ from your own. I may be a 30 something that wants to see the game continue to progress, but you seem to be a 30 something that is more interested in insulting people. So who's more childish?

Re: Show '09 vs. Show' 18

I don't know, there are a lot of differences between 09 and 17 that are important to me at least.

Outfielders catching 99.9% of the balls that were possible to catch (changed in 15). The dome always being open at the Rogers centre (changed in 16). Near impossible to activate branching animations (iterative, most improved in 17). OP timing hitting (11 or 12ish). Pulse pitching (12). Accuracy fielding (13). improved generated players (iterative). Fielder animation differentiation (iterative, started in 16 I think). Slide step (16? I'm losing track). Increased out of position penalties/decreased secondary position penalties... I can go on.

All sports games are terrible. Seriously, all of them. I hear the NBA 2k is halfway decent, but they all have issues when trying to emulate real life. The Show is amazing because it has such a solid foundation, and yes I would point to 09 as being the basis of that foundation. They just need to continue to chip away at the problems to continue to be the best sports game out there.

I'm underwhelmed by 18, no doubt, but it doesn't stop the fact that they have made a ton of improvements since 09. 18 can and will be a superior game to 17, it's just not superior enough in the ways that are important to me for me to purchase at full price. I will wait for a sale.

Edit: I can't believe I forgot my favourite feature, and the best feature (IMO) to ever be in a sports game. Year to freakin year saves (14). Finally I don't have to throw away the team that I'm attached to in order to enjoy the improvements of a new and exciting version of the show. I'll gladly pay sale prices in order to keep my save for the years I'm truly excited for.

I found that funny. I mean.. It's kinda accurate. They all do have issues trying to recreate the feel of the sport. It's tough to do. It takes some out of the box thinking. I think some of the older MLB games from around 1998-2004 did a more original and interesting job of it.
Do it. (Release The Show for PC)

Wow. Two threads regarding The Show becoming stale/boring and the lack of growth - right before release date.

Not a very good sign. I feel that there’s a lot of frustration with the devs focusing on things that I and maybe the community really doesn’t care about.

Personally, I didn’t like retro mode-tried it once- and never again. And now a batting stance creator...I will never use it.

The frustrating thing for me is that I feel the devs put time in these modes when time could have been used to make the actual gameplay more fulfilling.

I agree that is it getting stale, only played a handful of season games in 17. Mostly spent time in Play Now Live because it had current lineups and I felt like it mirrored what’s happening in real life. It’s a shame that the devs couldn’t make these games count in a season mode like 2k was able to.

The duel between the pitcher and batter is the heart of baseball, imo. Pitching has been very easy, even on Legend mode. The ease of pitching takes away from “the duel“ atmosphere that 2k seemed to focused on. I loved their (2k) pitching mode. It really brought out how important each and every pitch was and captured the feeling of baseball.

Am I saying that the show needs to be scrapped? No, definitely not- but I think that it needs to refocus on areas of the game that is baseball.

Btw, I have pre-ordered 18. I wasn’t going to after last years, but decided to give it a go. There’s been times when I regret this decision, especially after seeing the streams. Seems like very little growth, unless it’s online or DD (which I haven’t tried, tbh). Maybe this year..

This a good post. Shows our individual feelings on what takes away from our particular immersion and what doesn't.

For me, it's Matt. If I wasn't able to mute him (thank you SCEA for that option) I wouldn't be able to play the game. Listening to him after all these years, I cringe, but that's just my particular problem regarding staleness. And I disagree about the batting/pitching match up. Completely agree about Retro Mode and I won't even touch DD or RTTS.

That said, this game is fairly well loaded, can't please everyone, but offers a wealth of options.

The looks of create-a-player sold me this year. I'm a graphics whore, but that may mean absolutely zero to another gamer.

So, I'd say, all in all, if we're baseball fans we should really be able to find a ton of happiness with this game. Good gosh, how would it be if SCEA told us they were folding up shop at the end of the year. Be a sad day.

What improvements are you looking for graphically? I think they have improved imo. I think each year SDS does a good job of improving the game. Now it isnt WOW BANG BAM changes like night and day, but each year the game gets better and better. Im not really sure how they can WOW change the game, without turning it into a arcade, flashy, unrealistic what ever. I love baseball. I love playing this game each year. I love playing it 365 days. I love the fact that it is almost literally the only game I play. I love the little improvements each year they bring. I guess I just except the fact that they can only do some much each year. Each year they make it a little better. The game never gets stale for me. I also understand that it is in fact a video game. They will always be able to do more, and they will also never be able to duplicate certain things that real life baseball has. I'd rather them not put something in because they cant get the coding correct, then to put it in and ruin other things.

Madden get rid of the extras (SS/XF, HFA, media, scenarios, game plan) or turn them down considerably.

Well, the CAPS never came close to equaling the scanned player faces. They looked cartoonish. I've been pausing the streams and looking at the faces, even the fake generated faces that appear to be already in the game and they look a ton better. And some of the coaches (ugh), look like ugly gargoyles (if gargoyles could get any uglier). Was hoping we could edit them, but I do 30 team control and just fire them and put in someone who looks a bit more acceptable.

Yes, the coding thing. Admittedly I know nothing about it, but let's just take the create-a-stadium feature people demand. Just the stadium collision detection must be a hard one if a gamer is allowed to "create" a ball field. The stadiums in the game are beautifully rendered and I think a lot of people believe they might just be able to duplicate that somehow if given the chance. I dunno, and I think the negative backlash would be worse than we're seeing in these forums now.

SOTS is another game saver. With Matt off (cringe, and for me the annoucing in general) I load the game up with sounds and walkups that I enjoy. It's a feature that obviously adds to the presentation.

Like you, looking forward to exploring all the goodness next Friday.

Just the difference from 09 to 10 was huge, with HR Derby, pickoffs, the Futures game, custom music yells & chants, Target Field, catchers calling games, weekly live rosters, daytime transitional lighting, and crowd details. Oh the details!

It's amazing how much of a group of apologists OS is when it comes to MLB the Show and SDS. The game is stale when it comes to presentation and issues that have been in the game for most of the generation.

Sure the game has jumped leaps and bounds in graphics (as it should be with a system that is magnitudes greater than the last), and the hitting engine has no doubt been a clutch improvement to the game, but now it just seems like they are trying to sell the game based on Diamond Dynasty.

Seems as though anyone who voices displeasure with what basically seems like a 60 dollar roster update is pig piled (kind of noticed this in the Madden forum too). If you allow developers to get away with as little innovation as possible as opposed to holding them accountable, the game will improve centimeters and inches, with things that should have been in the game 5 years ago, as opposed to leaps and bounds.
