Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread
it's my biggest weakness/ curse.
thinking that with around 80-odd pitches down, they can come out and close the door in the 9th ...
i don't know why i do it. hahaComment

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread
Haven’t played The Show in quite a while, jumped back into The Show yesterday. I was only 3 games in to the 2019 season with my Yankees franchise, so I’m continuing on with that for now. At April 3rd now, record is 3-2.
Beat Baltimore in the series finale of our 1st series of the season to split it 2-2. Sort of a weird schedule after that.
A 2 game set at Fenway that’s divided by a day off. Then another series vs Baltimore, divided by a day off after the first game.
Won the first game @ Boston 8-5. Jalen Beeks (BOS) Vs Cole Hamels (NYY) 2 hits 2 walks from Harper. Judge had 4 hits 5 RBI’s 2 HR’s. A solo shot for Drury.
2 hits 2 RBI’s for Bogaerts, 3 hits for Pedroia,
4 AB’s 0 hits for JDM.
Hamels went 5 innings giving up 4 runs. Beeks went 5 giving up 5 runs. We got another run off Rodriguez in the 7th and 2 off Hembree in the 9th.
Chapman shut down Boston in the 8th going straight through Bogaerts, Martinez, and Betts with no trouble. Red Sox attempted to rally in the 9th as the Yankees turned to Nick Tropeano with a 4 run lead. After Boston got 1 back making it 8-5 with runners on the corners and 1 out we turned to Britton and made a flurry of defensive substitutions.
Hicks came in for Cruz in RF, then switched to CF moving Judge to RF. Didi came in at 2B for Chris Taylor then swapped positions with Gleyber moving Didi to SS.
After Christian Vasquez flew out to CF the game ended with a bit of a strange play. Nunez hit a hard grounder in front of the 1B runner making him hold up and hesitate as the ball flew past. Judge came up firing in RF throwing the sliding runner out at second.
One of the most clutch defensive substitutions I’ve made in the Show. No way was Nelson Cruz making that play with his 26 fielding, 51 reaction, and most importantly, his 42 arm accuracy. So hard to leave Cruz out of the lineup because of his bat.Last edited by Rocket32; 09-03-2018, 07:00 PM.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread
I’ve just been forced to finish my game against the Cubs with Corey Seger behind homeplate and Matt Kemp at SS.
I used most of my bench in the ninth inning, down 5-1 we started a rally that tied up the game but subsequently caused me no end of problems because both my catchers were replaced (Im still unsure how that happened but ok). We then took the lead in the top of the tenth but with Seger catching Kenley Jansen had to pitch mostly his cutter in the zone and the Cubs were able to tie it up. They ended up winning it in the 11th for the same reason. Ryu came out the bullpen but had to pitch conservatively once they had a base runner and we lost 7-6. Epic game though.
Both teams closing pitchers ended up recording a blown save, something that I haven’t seen all season in my franchise.Last edited by RogerDodger; 09-03-2018, 07:17 PM.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread
Marlins Win DivisionThe Marlins used a red hot final two months to claim the division. The offense led the way, which is unusual for the team, as they lead the league in runs scored.
Stan Brito was a big part of that. More on him in a bit.
Damian Boeve won 21 games, pacing the NL. He beat Charlie Sharpe of the Cubs by two.
However, Sharpe won the ERA title with an amazing 1.68 ERA on the season. The mark was good enough, by far, for the top ERA in all of MLB. Boeve's ERA was only good enough for 6th in the NL, coming in at 2.77.
Boeve also allowed a 1.00 or higher WHIP for the first time in his 12-year career.
"Let's all shed tears for poor Damian and his horrible 1.07 WHIP, " Javeri joked, "I don't know how he can hold his head up with pride after that. I think he should retire."
Brito Wins Triple Crown
Stan Brito had a struggle in September, but he was able to hold on to the batting average lead and seal the deal on the NL Triple Crown.
Brito batted .334 with 51 HR and 158 RBI. In addition to the triple crown stats, he lead the NL in Runs (136), OBP (.417), SLG (.691), OPS (1.107) and Hits (200). He was second in doubles (48) and WAR (7.6).
"Absolute amazing to watch him go about his business at the plate. Nothing phases him, he works hard and is always positive and confident, " Greg Rivera commented, "I try to watch his approach while I'm in the on-deck circle."
Brito won NL MVP, Hank Aaron Award, and Silver Slugger at third base.
Postseason
The Marlins advanced through the postseason again on the strength of their offense. They pushed past the Brewers 3-1 in the NLDS, scoring no less than 5 runs in any of the contests. The Giants pitched the Marlins harder, thanks to their 1-2 combo of Dugan and Ball. However, the Marlins still forged ahead 4-1.
Then the team ran into an equally hot offense in the Mariners. The Marlins couldn't find a way to keep ahead and ended up getting handled 4-1 to lose the World Series.
"It's disappointing, but congrats to the Mariners. We'll just have to find a way to do better. None of us on the mound really did what we could and should and it ended up burning us, " Boeve commented.
"Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread
Our winning streak has ended at 10 as we lost to the Padres last night, 4-1. Michael Wacha struggled with command and our bats went cold as we could get a timely hit to drive in a run. Mackenzie Gore was dominant for the Padres striking out 11 in route to the victory.
Next up is the series finale rubber match with Luke Weaver pitching for an injured Carlos Martinez. I'm not sure who the Padres are putting on the mound as they just made some roster moves.
ROSTER NEWS
The Cardinals claimed SS/UT Tim Anderson off waivers from the White Sox. The White Sox had placed him on outright waivers. Whether Anderson stays with the club or not remains to be seen. In order to make room on the roster, the Cardinals outright released Louis Coleman who they claimed off waivers about 3 weeks ago. Coleman struggled in Memphis pitching to a 4.75 ERA and losing 4 games in his short tenure with the team.
The Cardinals are expected to activate Patrick Wisdom from the 10 Day DL when they return home this weekend. Wisdom was placed on the DL due to a Flexor Strain. The Cardinals are considering sending him to Memphis until the All-Star break to try and get his swing back in tact. Wisdom is hitting just .202 on the year. Idea would be to have him work in Memphis the same way that Randal Grichuk is. With an 8 game lead in the division and Marwin Gonzalez playing well, we feel secure in letting both Wisdom and Grichuk work out their kinks and hopefully return for a strong 2nd half.I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.
I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread
I've gone back to my Red's franchise!
I really miss the extra strategy involved in resting players and batting for the pitcher that you don't get in the AL with the DH rule. I only gave up the Reds franchise bcos I was struggling to deal with the shadows between the mound and box in day games ... but after dealing with the shadows at Camden, the great american is nothing.
Roster Moves
SS JP Crawford Phillies for Iglesias; A+ rated 3B Renshaw & Eugenio Suarez
LHP Cole Hamels - for Sal Romano
RHP Kevin Gausman & Tim Beckham - David Hernandez & AAA (b rated) 1B prospect Tony Gonzalez & Phillip Ervin
CF Magnerius Sierra - Billy Hamilton
LF Gorkys Hernandez - AAA B rated prospect Mason Williams
CR Keynan Middleton - Amir Garrett
Matt Holiday Free agent 1 year 2mil – He's the right hand power bat my lineup needed. He plays OF & 1B and will be a great addition to pinch hit and rest out players when coming up against lefties.
First game back was an epic too.
Hamels Vs Scherzer
Reds def Nats 1-0. This game was a defensive orgasm. haha
Hamels spun a gem and one hit the Nats. The Nats struggle against lefties and Hamels wound back the clock to his phillies days.
JP Crawford put on a clinic in the middle diving left and right and making plays at first and turning 3 double plays. Scott Schebler also robbed a home run jumping at the RF wall.
For the Nationals, Scherzer was on song and made one mistake with a hanging slider left over the middle in the 6th inning to Tim Beckham who lifted it into deep left, it got carried in the wind and landed on top of the wall for a solo HR.
Scherzer's line would have won 99% of games
8 IP 5H 1R 1ER 0BB 11SO
CF Mike Taylor robbed a HR in deep centre going up the wall, and made two diving catches in the alley which would have been triples or even an inside the park HR with JP Crawford.
Game two of the series sees Kevin Gausman take on Stephen Strasburg in what should be another pitching and defence battle.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread
2029 MarlinsAs expected, the offseason brought some significant changes to the Marlins as they prepare for Opening Day 2029 (Year 15).
Overlooked in the hub bub about the players leaving via free agency is the complete revamping of the coaching staff due to a combination of contracts expiring and retirements.
The new manager is Cesar Page, a pitcher's manager that will be looking to reform how the arms work between starts.
"I want them to think like they are throwing to a hitter. In fact, I'll put a hitter in the box and tell them to not give up a hit. With this younger rotation, they need to be reminded to constantly work and improve, " Page commented.
Page's staff will have a similar view point to pitching. Craig Rose was brought in as pitching coach to further implement the changes, while Rob Bacon, the new third base coach, will work with fielders and encouraging a pitcher/fielder bond.
This will be important because the pitchers will have new fielders to rely on.
Gone is Jay Craft (Yankees). In his place a "pure defense" shortstop named Hideki Shinjo.
Gone is Mark Morrow (Red Sox). In his place is Duncan Ailes at second base.
Gone is Arturo Gonzalez (Dodgers). In his place is upstart right fielder Aaron Blair.
This includes the continuing to get used to Sammy Chastain, who took over left field after the Bo Winter trade.
Pitching and defense will be in the spotlight in the coming season. Offense will potentially be a "half a lineup" situation.
"Javeri, Brito, Rivera, Chastain...they are usually consistent. Blair, Shinjo, Peralta, Ailes...we'll have to see...but only Ailes projects to be a decent hitter on a consistent basis, " one analyst commented, "and only Peralta in that second group has any experience at all at the majors."
On the pitching side, the winds of change have blown through as well.
For the first time in his career, Damian Boeve will not be Opening Day starter. Instead, Mario Morales will get that honor as he was elevated, for now, to staff ace. Boeve will be #2 while Shane Kane, the rookie phenom who had his season interrupted by an 8-week injury, moves up to #3. Filling the staff is promising Jason Engle and trade acquisition rookie Chauncy Hogan.
In the bullpen, Curtis Anders will become the closer, at last, as he begins his 10th major league season.
"I can't wait. I've always wanted to be the closer for my team. They valued me taking more innings in between the 6th and 8th innings, but I'm grateful for this chance. I hope I won't disappoint, " Anders commented, the joy readily visible on his face.
Bill McDonald returns from his season-ending head injury to the middle innings and Carlos Guerra, perhaps with an assist from Fernando Delgado, will likely take on the old "6th-to-8th-inning" role.
Overall, the Marlins should be competitive, but they could very well be a notch or two lower as well. Several young and/or inexperienced players occupy significant roles and there's the revamped dugout staff and their new routines and ideas.
And the first opponent for the Marlins? The infamous Charlie Sharpe.
Welcome to 2029, Marlins.Last edited by KBLover; 09-04-2018, 05:29 PM."Some people call it butterflies, but to him, it probably feels like pterodactyls in his stomach." --Plesac in MLB18Comment

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread
At the All-Star break with an MLB-best 64-31 record. Sending five players to the All-Star Game, had some major snubs, too. Two consecutive sweeps against poor teams, the Reds and the Padres to end the first half.

1.Tim Anderson 28 yo 97 OVR SS
.287 AVG/40 HR/99 RBI/10 SB
Wow what a work horse, played every single game. Might be the first time I've seen that. Career highs in HR,RBI and AVG. As I've mentioned several times this year, this is his contract year and he is gonna be paid this offseason. Unfortunately, I highly doubt we can afford his asking price of 30 mil/yr. Hopefully we can get him a world series. If we cant resign him, he will be missed.
2.Yoan Moncada 26 yo 99 OVR 2B
.340 AVG/37 HR/115 RBI/18 SB
Luckily the new face of our franchise is still signed through next year. When his contract does expire, we will do everything in our power to resign. He led the batting title race all season before falling off toward the end and losing to ole Trout.
3.Rhys Hoskins 29 yo 95 OVR LF
.315 AVG/58 HR/146 RBI
MVP!!!! My first MVP winner and wow what a season. Our whole team crushed the BP all year but Hoskins was on another level. I really thought we could get him 60 hr but it wasnt meant to be. He too is a free agent after this season and will also be tough to resign 20 mil/yr asking price
4.Michael Conforto 29 yo 88 OVR DH
.269 AVG/35 HR/84 RBI
Ole Mike has been a staple for our team since trading for him in 2018. This was the first year since the trade that he has been healthy throughout. He is signed through next season.
5.Vladimir Guerrero JR 23 YO 85 OVR 3B
.288 AVG/31 HR/104 RBI
Mr. Clutch all season knocking in guys in just about every game. Such a steal in the trade with Toronto (we really shafted them I believe we only sent Matt Davidson in a straight 3b for 3b trade). He still has a couple more years of easy control left before he gets really expensive.
6.Eloy Jiminez 25 YO 89 OVR RF
.281 AVG/32 HR/74 RBI
Steadily Improving and took over the starting RF spot after the trade of Avisail Garcia early in the season. He will be a free agent this year. We will try to bring him back but if came down to him and Anderson, Jiminez would lose out.
7.Jose Abreu 35 YO 84 OVR 1B
.265 AVG/18 HR/71 RBI
Solid season from old faithful but he is declining rather quickly. He also has a young stud breathing down his neck. His contract is up after next season and I really hope he retires as I dont want to play against him.
8.Johnny Shinjo 21 YO 84 OVR CF
.266 AVG/20 HR/54 RBI
Our 2018 first rounder has cemented him self as a staple on our team. He didnt have a breakout year like the rest of our team but he's also very cheap (1.6 mil) and is under control for two more years after this season.
9.Dom Nunez 27 YO 81 OVR C
.296 AVG/10 HR/28 RBI
Acquired in a trade early in the season and eventually one the battle for the starting Catcher spot after trading off with Johan Cruz and Francisco Cervelli for a while. He is a great hitting catcher and will likely remain our starter for quite sometime.
BENCH
Enrique Cruz 24 yo 81 OVR 1B
.321 AVG/12 HR/24 RBI (29 GAMES)
The young stud that is behind Abreu. He started while old man Jose was injured and absolutely raked. Eventually, he will have to prove that he can play that well throughout a whole season but I was pretty impressed with his bat.
Francisco Cervelli 36 to 75 OVR C
.274 AVG/5 HR/19 RBI(59 GAMES)
Began the season as the starting catcher after being picked up as a free agent in the off season. Injuries and him quickly declining led to the younger more athletic Nunez taking over.
Milo Griffiths 24 YO 83 OVR 2B
.263 AVG/3 HR/24 RBI (48 GAMES)
Not much to say here, he is a solid young middle infielder. He does have wacky stance though which I seem to have a hard time hitting out of.
Leody Taveras 23 YO 85 OVR CF
.306 AVG/7 HR/33 RBI/7 SB (74 GAMES)
poor guy, he should be starting somewhere but we have him on the bench due to our crowded outfield. He might get his chance next season if we cant bring Jiminez back.
Starting Rotation
1.Lucas Giolito 27 YO 93 OVR RHP
13-9/3.81 ERA/203.1 IP/199 SO
Solid all season but not great. Definitely didnt perform like the ace that he should be. Still skills wise, he is our best pitcher and we have him hooked on a long contract.
2.Reynaldo Lopez 28 YO 91 OVR RHP
14-9/3.86 ERA/195.2 IP/171 SO
Along the same lines as Giolito he pitched well but didnt dominate. He too is under contract for a while and will remain on the staff.
3.Lance McCullers JR 28 YO 82 OVR RHP
10-15/4.86 ERA/187.0 IP/190 SO
Absolutely terrible FA signing. Well, I guess it could have been worse but he always seemed to get smacked around in every game. He may be replaced in the rotation for the playoffs.
4.Michael Kopech 25 YO RHP
16-6/3.80 ERA/194.1 IP/223 SO
Our flamethrower. Solid season and continues to develop. He is a fa after this season and wants double what he made this year. We would love to bring him back but I dont know if we can.
5.Stephen Gonsalves 26 YO LHP
19-5/2.70 ERA/197.0 IP/205 SO
Absolute stud, I love that we stole him from the Twins. I don't remember what we traded for him but whatever it was, it was well worth it. Best part is that he is cheap and signed through 2025.
BULLPEN
Martin Perez 30 YO 81 OVR LHP LRP
13-4/3.72 ERA/142.2 IP/90 SO
Solid FA pickup and is the one who may replace Mcculers in the post season.
Gregory Infante 34 YO 78 OVR RHP MRP
5-0/3.14 ERA/28.2 IP/22 SO
Age is catching up to him and for some reason he always starts the season in the minors. He has always been solid for me. We will see how much he declines by next season. If it's too much, he might have to finish his Whitw Sox career in AAA
Brad Bach 35 YO 80 OVR RHP MRP
3-0/4.10 ERA/59.1 IP/62 SO
Another solid FA pickup a couple of years ago. It appears age is catching up to him as well but should still be solid atleast for the last year of his contract next season.
Bruce Rondon 31 YO 84 OVR RHP MRP
2-4/5.18 ERA/57.1 IP/70 SO
Rough numbers for ole Rondon who has served us well since coming over in 2019. I still pitched well with him I guess he mostly struggled during simmer games.
Jose Torres 28 YO/88 OVR LHP SU
1-3/4.29 ERA/35.2 IP/35 SO
The mystery man. He didnt play for anyone from 2018-2020. We picked him up as a FA in 2021 and he has been solid. Didnt have a great year this season but I still wouldn't hesitate to bring him in at the 8th inning in a close game.
Nate Jones 36 YO 82 OVR RHP SU
1-3/4.66 ERA/36.2 IP/55 SO
Faithfully served as our closer from 18-21 but was replaced this season by a young up and comer. He is in his last year and will likely be given the chance to test FA unless he retires.
Von Jordan 25 YO 88 OVR RHP CLOSER
2-1/2.22 ERA/56.2 IP/51 SO/50 SV
He is signed through next season at quite the bargain price (998 k) which isnt much less than what he wants. Its funny, I like closers to be flame throwers but he isnt. He has nice stuff however and saved just about 50% of our wins.

OVERVIEW
Well another regular season is done and over with.
We make the playoffs for the third time in the past four seasons. Our offense was a freak show this season as we led in most categories. Luckily, we head into the playoffs with no injuries to any major players and we will look to get past the first round as we face the Yankees in the ALDS.

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread
Walk-off Grand Slam by Cespedes. Mets were down 8-3 to the Brewers, but battled back to get within 8-6 heading into the 9th, setting the stage for the late-game dramatics. Cespedes has been in a big slump to start the 2019 season, and was dropped in the lineup before this game. Could very well be the moment he catches fire.Last edited by DJ; 09-05-2018, 02:50 PM.Currently Playing:

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread
Man, Austin Meadows is quite literally tearing the cover off the ball.
I had a graphic flash up during a game last night that he ended up going 2-5 with an RBI in.
He's hitting .472 in like the last 3 weeks since the All Star Break. I've really grown accustomed to his stance, he started the season off hitting like .205 in April.Comment

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread
Bottom of the 7th, up 1-0, and the Orioles batter hits a home run distance shot. I can tell it's going to be close right off the bat. I'm running my LF (Trey Bloom) to it and the timing circle appears. I make it just in time and press the jump button, Bloom makes a heroic leap and...
He blocks the home run... with his elbow.
Orioles are held to a one out double on the play, and callup Franco pitches out of the jam. Sure it was spring training, but it was still the happiest I've ever been about one of my players making a mistake. Huzzah for failing upwards!Comment
