    June 2021 Recap

MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

Had a show down with the Red Sox in the wild card game and was destroyed 9-3. They were the better team all game in every aspect. It was a busy, but good off-season for the Jays. Here are some of my moves:

Traded Justin Smoak and OF Roemen Fields to Minnesota for OF prospect Alex Kirilloff, OF Zack Granite. Smoak had a career year hitting .300 with 38 homers. The Blue Jays are looking to get younger with the upcoming flock of young talent that includes Vlad Jr. Kirilloff will develop in the minors, while Granite will start the year in AAA and provide OF depth.

Signed Eugenio Suarez and David Peralta to one year deals. Suarez hadn’t signed the extension with the roster I was using and the Reds decided to let him walk. Senzel will take over at 3B. Peralta had a good year with Arizona last season, but he was also let go by the team. The Blue jays swept in and grabbed them both on one year deals to bridge the game to some younger players. Suarez will play 1B until last years first rounder has developed in the minors for a year. He looks MLB ready right now (75/B). Peralta will be the regular in RF. Grichuk will shift to LF and Hernandez will start CF. This looks to be the regular OF to start the season.

Also, signed Wilmer Difo to a two year deal to backup/platoon in the infield and provide some speed and contact for me. Grabbed Hanley Ramirez to platoon at DH and to have a veteran presence if the youth falters.

Let Donaldson, JA Happ, Estrada and Tyson Ross walk. Signed Jerad Eickhoff to a 3 year deal and Nate Karns/Anthony DeSclafani to one year deals. These three starters all had consistent seasons last year and will look to provide the Blue Jays rotation with some quality starts.

Clippard was let go, but Alberqueque was brought back after a good year out of the bullpen. The bullpen will look much the same as last year.

Arismendy Alcantara, Tony Sipp, John Alford, Chris Tillman, Hector Sanchez and Mike Freeman were signed to minor league deals to provide depth.

We got much younger for 2019. It’s a team I am very excited to play with. I’ll post final roster/depth chart later!

        Atlanta Braves Franchise

2018 Early Season and First Year Player Draft Wrap Up

Braves Record: 30-33, 3rd in NL East

First two months are in the books, and the team is about what I expected though we are hanging in. We stumbled out of the gate and fell 8 below .500 by the end of April but caught a bit of a rebound in May to 30-33 through 63 games. The team is still trying to figure out if it is ready to contend, though the Nats are 36-26 and have begun to separate themselves from the pack a bit in the NL east. Quick recap of the team's performance so far:

        Pitching Staff
Teheran and McCarthy have been steady at the front end, both pitching to ERA's in the low 3's. Chase Whitley got off to a rough start and has been relegated to bullpen duty. Sean Newcomb was absolutely dreadful in April, walking 20 batters in 9.0 IP in his first 3 starts. He has started to pitch better and has too much potential to be shipped out to the farm. 21-year-old rookie Luiz Gohara has been great as the fifth starter, currently sitting at 4-3, 3.78, with 60 K in 69 IP. Arodys Vizcaino has been dominant as the closer, pitching to a 1.71 ERA with 14 saves and 35 K in 21 IP. 30-year-old lefty Grant Dayton has also emerged: he is 3-1 with a 1.66 ERA and a WHIP of 0.89.

        Lineup
Freddie Freeman has been our rock as expected, currently batting .288/.407/.600 and tied for first in the NL with 15 dingers. Catcher Tyler Flowers has also been surprisingly productive, belting 10 homers and tallying 33 RBI. Outside of them, my team hits for a decent average but does not produce a lot of runs. We sit toward the bottom third of the league in most offensive categories as a team. Third base remains a total black hole: I opened the year with a platoon of Charlie Culberson and Johan Camargo who both hit below .100 in April. Called up #6 prospect Austin Riley in a desperation move, and he was no better. Culberson eventually started to hit a little bit, so I'm currently working with a platoon between him and utility man Christian Colon. My bench is very thin aside from Ezequiel Carrera who has been a serviceable 4th outfielder and pinch hitter. Ronald Acuna is hitting .206 but has 6 HR, 23 RBI and 7 SB. Albies and Swanson started the year hot batting over .300, but have since cooled off and aren't quite up to par as run producers.

        Outlook
We are 6.5 out from the division and 5.5 out from the very crowded NL wild card. I think we are in a position to go either way, as a good run or bad losing streak could quickly decide our fate. As of now I'm standing pat as we look ahead to the trade deadline. It may take until the all-star break for this team to figure out if we will be in the running for a playoff spot in 2018.

        2018 MLB Draft Recap

For some reason I was only able to draft 6 players. Not sure if the Braves lost a comp pick from a 2017 transaction? Anyway here are the selections:

        Round 1: 1B Dave Ulrich - Age 19 - Netherlands - 68 OVR / 89 Potential
Switch hitter who already has decent offensive attributes. He projects to hit for well-above average power and a solid batting average. He needs some work defensively and is stuck at first base, so if he blazes a quick trail to the majors he would push Freddie Freeman back to third.

        Round 2: RF Chris Sanchez - Age 18 - California - 47 / 92
Projects as a future all-star but will need several years of development. He is well-rounded in all areas and looks like he would be an Alex Rios - type outfielder with decent power and speed stats.

        Round 3: CF Aubrey Waldron - Age 19 - Pennsylvania - 61 / 67
He is nearly maxed out now and doesn't project for much beyond organizational depth of a potential 4th outfielder role down the line. He does have 98 speed.

        Round 4: CF Richie Padilla - Age 21 - Venezuela - 50 / 74
Also has well above average speed, to go along with a good glove. Will need to prove he can hit to make the show.

        Round 5: Johnny Hammock - Age 21 - Ohio - 64 / 76
Righty with a fastball/change-up mix. Has big time velocity but no breaking ball. Projects as a back-end starter or middle reliever.

        Round 6: SP Andrew Platt - Age 20 - New Jersey - 52 / 79
Lefty with a 4-pitch mix, 4-seam, change, split, and curve. Has middle-of-the-road stuff but already solid 82 stamina. Will need a few years on the farm but could be a mid-rotation starter down the line.

Had a hard time finding elite power prospects or any good catchers during my scouting escapades. Overall I think it was an average draft, but I'm glad I stocked up on outfielders as prospect Christian Pache has been scuffling in AAA and has dropped to C-potential. I will post my next update at the all-star break, when I will hopefully have an answer as to whether this team is legit.

Is it possible to Player Lock a Closer when in Franchise, could not see the option.

I want to be able to play my closer in a franchise but it does not seem like I can, more than likely missed something as I only ever do RTTS,

Any help would be much appreciated.

I’ve always been a AL team on Franchise and my bench has always been a backup catcher, a utility player and a pinch hitter/runner.
Gunna start a new franchise in the NL and just wondering how you NL players pick your bench.

For me it's a catcher, two outfielders and 2 infielders (preferably 2 that can play multiple infielder positions). So for my Padres I have a second baseman (who can play third and left) and a third baseman (who can play first). My starting second baseman can play SS as well so that all positions covered.

Generally: backup catcher, backup infielder, backup outfielder, plus two additional fill-ins wherever I need depth. In my Braves franchise I have Kurt Suzuki, Christian Colon (reserve infielder who occasionally starts at 3rd), Ryan Flaherty (utility can play multiple IF/OF positions), Ezequiel Carrera (4th outfielder and primary pinch hitter) and Preston Tucker (decent power for some more pinch hitting/outfield depth. Generally you want to have a backup for all 8 defensive positions at a given time. One of your bench guys may be platooning with one of your starters as well. Its really no different than an AL bench - just replace your DH with a useful pinch hitter.

One month into the season, we sit 11-13, which is last in the AL East, 5.5 games back. Not a bad record considering we were really hit by the injury bug. Solarte, Tulo, Hernandez and Alberquerque were on and now off the 10-day DL. Guerrero Jr. currently sits on the 10-day DL for five days or so. Finally, we lost Devon Travis and Russell Martin to season ending injuries. Travis tore his labrum and Martin his ACL. Both player's careers could be in jeopardy here.

Here is a look at my depth chart for all three levels:

Hopefully now that we have a tough, injury-ridden month over against all AL East teams, we can rebound in May to get back closer to the hunt. My depth is being tested and my starters have been hit hard, but I hope they will get back to consistent play. Here are some notable stats:

                      OVERVIEW
Here we are, last month of the season again! Going into September, we have a comfortable 13.5 game lead over the second place Indians and look to finish on top of the division. We also currently hold the best record in the AL and second behind the Brewers (90-46) who have not seen any sort of championship hangover after winning the World Series last season.

We did suffer a major setback toward the end of August. Avisail Garcia went down with a broken foot. At this point he is still slated to miss 1-2 months. He may be able to return toward the end of the playoffs if we make it deep enough but he is likely done for the year. He had been having a career year and was in the lead for the AL batting title with a .338 average. Brett Gardner has taken his place in right field.

Pitchers are still doing well. Gerrit Cole is 18-1 and is the front runner for the AL CY Young. He passed Chris Sale who had his worst month in August and also recently found himself on the DL with a fractured arm.

Cole will look to out pace Corey Kluber (18-7/2.56 ERA/197 SO) who has won the CY Young the past three seasons and is currently in second for this year's award.

Miami during 2018 season were out of it. I traded Realmuto, Castro and Bour. Somwhow they strung together a decent 2nd half after the deadline. Gave "management" a vision toward thw offseason. In offseason, We signed Manny Machado. He got his championship with St.Louis after being dealt there at deadline. Now got his payday and is "closer" to home which was important to him. Also added Keon Broxton as well.

2019 season, Miami finished .500. Again, management knew they are close to being a true contender. So in the offseason, Miami went out and brought hometown guys Lance McCullers Jr and Anthony Rizzo home. Also adding Yasiel Puig.

                        C - Joey Bart
                        1B - Anthony Rizzo
                        2B - 2018 1st round draft pick (77 overall)
                        3B - Brian Anderson
                        SS - Manny Machado
                        LF - Louis Brinson
                        CF - Keon Broxton
                        RF - Yasiel Puig

This is the 2020 Miami lineup thats ready for their chance at the divison title and potential WS run
Oakland A's - Seattle Mariners - Detroit Tigers
Pittsburgh Steelers - Green Bay Packers
                        Detroit Red Wings

MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

We head into the last week of August at 60-62 on the year. We are 6 1/2 games behind the Reds but only 2 back of the Giants for the wildcard. No doubt we have underachieved this year. Some of that is due to injuries, but I think a majority of it is poor roster management on my part. I've treated this roster like an experiment where I am trying different things/players just to try them to see what outcome I get. In doing that I've not allowed this roster to gel together and form any type of team chemistry.

With that said, we will just ride out these last 5 weeks or so and see what happens. If we make the playoffs great! If we don't then I will take the blame and work to put together a winning team in 2020. The only move that I've made that I have no regrets about is hiring a new hitting coach.

With that said we are making our West coast trip starting with 3 in San Diego against the wildcard leading Padres.

You play on Legend with default sliders, right countryboy? Any tips on how to hit on Legend? Hall Of Fame was getting a bit to easy so I moved up to Legend, I have only played several games on Legend so far but I have barely been able to score in all but one which was an exhibition game vs the Nationals where I somehow scored 10+ runs. Not that I expected to dominate like that all the time, just thought it was a ‘breakthrough’ of sorts but nope, right back to nothing and got held to 1 run by Alex Cobb and Baltimore.

                              August Recap

The Indians had a bad month of August as they went 12-16 and have actually found themselves behind the Twins in the Central right now going into the month of September. The Indians are going to have to have a hell of a September in order to get to the playoffs.

I don’t know what tips I can offer other than I look for pitches in my hitters hot zone on first pitch and I sit on pitches (look fastball, look curve etc) until 2 strikes. With 2 strikes I do my best to fight off pitches that are hard to handle in hopes the pitcher makes a mistake.

Approach really isn’t different from HOF to Legend
