Texas hands Blue Jays first loss and Makes a Statement
Texas looked to be putting the off-season game plan to full effect yesterday, as they took a convincing 6-4 victory over the Blue Jays in their home turf.
Southpaw Jose Villarreal looked unfazed against the frightening lineup of the Jays, going 5 2/3rds innings and giving up 1 run. He constantly kept hitters off balance and kept the middle of the order completely silent.
Boone Nunez was shaky from the start however, and while some great calls from Rodreguiz kept him in the game until the 5th, a 3 run homer from Sin-Soo Choo chased him out of the game with just 4 2/3rds innings completed. He gave up all 6 of the Rangers' runs.
The one bright spot for the Jays was Daniel Franco, who hit a solo home run and a two RBI double. Franco has truly been a bright spot so far in the season, providing great offense and being an above average defender at third.
Ex-Jays Xander Boegarts and Kelvin Herrera both got vengeance against their former club. Boegarts was 3 for 5 on the day, and an important part of all 6 runs. The Jays had attempted to resign Boegarts in the off season, but he eventually went with the Post-Season rivals Rangers offer. Herrera put the Jays rally to a stop in the 9th. He was never offered a contract by the Jays, as they are trying to make space for the young talent to shine in the pitching department.
The Blue jays are now 3-1 on the season. The Rangers are 4-1. Game 2 of the series is set for tonight.
