Probably wouldn't fly with a lot of players, I'm guessing.

Yeah, I really wish they'd add stats as a factor to OVR when making decisions like this.

I guess they tried to with the expected performance aspect to morale, which can influence OVR.

I think moving it from morale and just have it as part of the OVR calculation directly would be more impactful, a lot like how you can have OOTP's AI consider stats as heavily as you'd like in your scouts OVR grading.

Sometimes real teams don't take a chance and go for the win. Sometimes they overdo it.

I've seen both by the CPU. To me, that's just fine. I wouldn't want to see nearly perfect moves every time.
Hindsight being 20/20, the mentioned Bagwell/Anderson trade prolly would be vetoed, knowing what we know now.

But, in the context of the individual franchise, only knowing what we know up to that point, it might not be vetoed.

Back then, we didn't "know" that Bagwell would be a super star. The Red Sox felt they were a reliever away from winning the World Series (and they weren't that far off in thinking that) Also keep in mind that at the time of the trade, Bagwell was a 3B man. Bagwell was blocked by Wade Boggs and Scott Cooper at 3B. Why not do what the Astros did and switch him to 1B? Well, Bagwell was blocked there as well, by Carlos Quintana, and Mo Vaughn.

Boston had a 6.5 game lead in the division at the time of the trade, and had arguably the WORST bullpen in baseball that year. They needed to make an upgrade. Anderson was one of the best relievers in baseball in 1990.

In hindsight, the trade looks lopsided (it was) But in 1990, the Red Sox viewed it as trading a prospect blocked by good players at the majors for one of the best relievers in baseball.....

Yes but even then, dealing him for a reliever seems like a serious stretch, especially already with the division lead, even with said worst bullpen.

And well, I mean, they dumped Boggs, what, 2 years later. Dawson was 38 and clinging to a career. Vaughn could DH. Bags to 1B until they let Wade walk. Cooper? Tch. Naehring was better but no Bagwell.

But of course, your POV about the trade illustrates why I think reversing moves and trying to craft "perfect" trades shouldn't be done. My POV would be "wow that's just a serious overpay" but I would allow it because of your POV being possible and I don't know what the other teams think they need or what they see.

It was objectively lopsided but the team felt the move needed to be made. The Red Sox "AI" undervalued Bagwell and/or was in pure "Playoff Push" mode.

So why shouldn't MLBTS teams be given the same mindset?

        Atlanta Braves Franchise

        2018 Mid-Season Update

My Braves hung around .500 for a while to start the summer, but a late June losing streak has pretty much pushed me to selling at the trade deadline. We have dropped 7 in a row and 9 of 10, and are now 35-44 as we near the end of June. We are 10 out from the division and 8 out from the wild card, so its time to start thinking toward retooling for next season. We have several impending free agents who will be placed on the trading block that i can hopefully turn into a few useful, controllable pieces. Players to be placed on the block:

        SP Brandon McCarthy
        SP Chase Whitley
        RP Peter Moylan
        C Tyler Flowers
        C Kurt Suzuki
        RF Nick Markakis

Don’t expect a major haul for any of these guys as they are all well past their prime and have overall ratings in the 70’s, but I have zero incentive to keep them around as they will not be given qualifying offers after the season. The one impending free agent that I will not trade is CP Arodys Vizcaino, who I hope to sign to a moderate 2-3 year deal.

The all-star break is coming soon. RP Grant Dayton has pitched to an ERA under 2 and has already logged almost 50 innings out of the pen; he has a strong case to be a surprise all-star. Freddie Freeman currently is second in voting among first basemen only to Joey Votto.

          Swept in Cincy!

Bottom line with this series. We got our butt kicked by a team with similar record coming in as ours. Any time your starting rotation give's up 4 earned runs/game equals a loss. My record is now 10-16. Luckily for us, the East is beating up on each other early in the year. I am 3.5 GB of the 1st place Nationals.

We lost C Tyler Flowers .344avg, 2HR, 6 RBI for 1-2 months with a fractured foot. SP Archer hit by a line drive and either later that inning came out of the game with Bruised ribs(1-6 days). That was in Game 4. He was being the sweep stopper, the "Ace". 4.0IP,4H,ER,0BB & 2K. We lost 3-1.

I traded for C Lucroy from the A's for RP Boyer & SP Blair. His overall boosted because he's closer to home(FLA) Sent SP Folty to Triple A & brought up SP Newcomb. He'll be back.

Next up is the Phillies in Philly...

            OVERVIEW
Well, we completed our final GM goal on the last year of our contract (win division). We are the only team from the AL Central that made the playoffs as Cleveland had a nice year (90-72) but still missed the wildcard by four games.

We will face the winner of the wildcard game which features the Angels (98-65) and the Blue Jays (94-68). Part of me wants to play the Angels since they knocked us out in the Wildcard game last season. But I also dont want to face Trout in the final year of his contract. The Angels played game 163 against the Astros as the two played a extra game to determine the winner of their division.

Avisail Garcia is still slated to be injured for 2-3 weeks and is still on the DL for 19 days.

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

A week away from the 2018 all-star break and my Braves have the first two deadline deals out of the way. Tampa Bay is in the mix for a playoff spot in a very competitive AL East / Wildcard race and sent over an offer for Brandon McCarthy as soon as he was placed on the block. We worked out the following deal:

Rays receive: SP Brandon McCarthy (Age 34, 75 OVR) - he’s pitched to a 2.88 ERA in 2018 as a fixture in my rotation, so should help solidify their pitching staff a bit.

              Braves receive:
RF Justin Williams (Age 22, 64 OVR, B potential) - he becomes my top outfield prospect. Could be in the majors by 2019 and projects as a future regular.

RP Diego Castillo (Age 24, 64 OVR, C potential) - has top of the scale velocity. Projects as a middle reliever in the majors and is nearly MLB-ready.

A week later I was able to dump Peter Moylan for a humble take.

Red Sox receive: RP Peter Moylan (Age 39, 73 OVR) - Was mostly reliable in an 8th inning role for me, but is declining quickly and will likely retire after the season. I guess the Sox liked his ‘A’ potential and needed a righty sinkerballer for the postseason push.

              Braves receive:
RP Tommy Layne (Age 33, 76 OVR, C potential): Controllable as he is only arbitration-eligible after the season. He has a spot on the team until he declines and a youngster supplants him.

SP Kevin McAvoy (Age 24, 62 OVR, C potential): Mid-range prospect who will add some depth . He slides into a talented AA rotation.

              Still on the block:
              SP Chase Whitley
              C Kurt Suzuki
              C Tyler Flowers
              RF Nick Markakis

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

The calendar has flipped to September and after winning 7 of our last 10, we find ourselves 1 1/2 games behind the Reds in the Central and currently the 2nd wildcard. We are playing our best baseball right now.

We swept the Padres in 3, took two of 3 from the Rockies and have won the first two against the Giants.

The Central is tight as the Reds, us, and the Cubs are all within 3 1/2 games. The wildcard is even more competitive:

                Padres -
                Cardinals - (1 1/2 GB of Padres)

                Braves - 1 GB
                Cubs - 2 GB
                Marlins - 2 GB
                Giants - 2 1/2 GB
                Diamondbacks - 3 GB
                Rockies - 3 1/2 GB
                Nationals - 4 GB

                Rest of the majors:

                AL East

                Yankees -
                Orioles - 1 GB

                AL Central

                Tigers -
                Twins - 5 1/2 GB
                Indians - 6 1/2 GB

                AL West

                Astros -
                A's - 2 GB
                Rangers - 6 GB

                AL Wildcard

                A's -
                Orioles - (1 1/2 GB A's)

                Twins - 2 GB
                Rangers - 2 1/2 GB
                Indians - 3 GB
                Mariners - 5 GB
                White Sox - 6 GB
                Angels - 6 GB

                NL East

                Mets -
                Braves - 2 GB
                Marlins - 3 GB
                Nationals - 5 GB

                [NL West

                Dodgers -
                Padres - 17 1/2 GB

I think the NL West has been won.

Time to get back at it and keep the hot streak going. September baseball!!!
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

                    All Star Break - 2024

96 games down and im still not sure what this team has in them. We are 49-47. 3rd in the division. 5.5 games behind the Twins and 2 games back of a WC spot. Things were looking really good near the end of June. We went 12-3 from June 6th to the 22nd. we were 6 games over .500 and half a game out of the division lead. Not so great since going 9-12 and while being swept by the Tigers and Twins.

                    Spoiler

Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh both lead their division after finishing tied for the worst record in the Majors last season. Meanwhile Miami and Milwaukee are both last in their division after winning them last season. As of right now only 3 of the playoff teams from last season are currently in a playoff spot (NYY, LAD, SF).

The offense has been scoring slightly less than it did through the first 2 months. Even though we are hitting better and getting on base more. Our line is now .255/.329/.411 (18th, 17th, 21st). We have 426 Runs (8th), 177 Doubles (4th), 18 Triples (11th), 100 HR (26th), 53 SB (23rd), a .679 SB% (13th) 349 Walks (13th) and 738 Strikeouts (5th).

The pitching has been quite a bit better. Our ERA is down to 4.17 (21st), We have 7 Shutouts (12th), 116 HR allowed (18th), 299 Walks (2nd), but still dead last in Strikeouts with 696.

40 more games until September. 24 of them will on the road. 25 against the division. We are currently 23-20 on the Road and 16-19 against the division. We have 11 games against teams ahead of us in the WC race (7 vs CLE, 4 vs BAL). And 20 games against teams over .500. Ive noticed that when we have a lot of off days we seem to do better. So hopefully the 3 Mondays off in August can help us out. We really need the team to show up like they did in June. Gonna look around the trade market as we get close to the deadline. Mainly looking for a reliever. But could make some moves elsewhere.

                          Spoiler

40 more games until September. 24 of them will on the road. 25 against the division. We are currently 23-20 on the Road and 16-19 against the division. We have 11 games against teams ahead of us in the WC race (7 vs CLE, 4 vs BAL). And 20 games against teams over .500. Ive noticed that when we have a lot of off days we seem to do better. So hopefully the 3 Mondays off in August can help us out. We really need the team to show up like they did in June. Gonna look around the trade market as we get close to the deadline. Mainly looking for a reliever. But could make some moves elsewhere.

                            Atlanta Braves Franchise

                            2018 All-Star Break

                            Braves record: 41-54 (3rd) - rebuild continues

All-star weekend kicked off with a trade offer from the Phillies, which I accepted.

                            Phillies receive:
C Tyler Flowers (Age 32, 79 OVR) - He had been our best run producer not named Freddie Freeman, tallying 14 HR and 46 RBI. As an impending free agent with a team that I am building with youth, it was the right time to part ways. He will become the Phillies starting catcher immediately.

                            Braves receive:
SP Drew Anderson (Age 24, 61 OVR, B potential) - Righty with a standard repertoire, and still young enough to project as a mid-rotation starter. I am deep with pitchers however, so he reports to Class-A Florida.

SS Jose Gomez (Age 21, 64 OVR, C potential) - Solid all-around player who is very young and becomes the best SS in my minor league system. He will start in AAA.

Freddie Freeman is 2nd in the NL with 23 homers. He was selected for the Home Run Derby, which he won! He beat out Mike Trout, Lucas Duda, and Adrian Beltre to take the crown. This kicked off a week of good representation for the Braves in Washington for all-star week.

The following Braves players were selected as All-Stars:

                            1B Freddie Freeman: .299/.419/.598, 23 HR, 59 RBI, 58 R, 4 SB
He made his third career all-star appearance on the strength of a great first half. Votto got the most votes at 1B, but Freddie still made the start at DH. He went 0-2 with a walk in the game.

                            CP Arodys Vizcaino: 4-2, 3.67 ERA, 20 SV, 34.1 IP, 52 SO, 1.19 WHIP
Not eye-popping numbers, but Vizcaino has established himself as one of the top shut-down relievers in the league this season. It is his first career all-star appearance. He did not pitch in the game.

                            RP Grant Dayton: 3-1, 1.75 ERA, 56.2 IP, 61 SO, 1.01 WHIP
Could not have predicted this one, as my dependable 30-year old middle relief lefty is having a career year. He was acquired on waivers from the Dodgers after the 2017 season and has proven to be a real diamond in the rough and an absolute workhorse in the pen. He also did not pitch in the game.

As for the game, the AL cleaned the NL's clock and won 9-0. George Springer wins ASG MVP with a 3-run jack in the 8th inning off of DBacks closer Archie Bradley. Freeman winning the derby may well be the highlight of my season, as we are in full rebuild mode and have a few more moves to make in the next 2 weeks as we approach August. Holding auditions for 2019 roster spots very shortly, so stay tuned.
