With Archer moving today and the rumors suggesting San Diego was pretty heavily involved, do I make a trade for him? Fair trade would probably include at least Quantrill/Baez + two other B potential guys at least..

Ill probably have to think it over some more. I also reallllly want Britton, and it looks like a deal for Josh Rogers, Dillon Tate, and Tyler Austin will do it, but I'm hesitant. Neil Walker is my other 1B and he's out with a broken foot for at least another month. Not sure I can afford to part with Austin unless I can move Shreve/Warren for a backup 1B.

I'm a big time rebuilding guy and love using the Padres. Great stadium and solid farm system. I was a little surprised to hear them in the Archer sweepstakes as well. But, they just gave Hosmer a long term deal and I think part of that was the promise they will save money and spend it on FA and mix them with their top young talent. I think it was like a Jayson Werth with the Nats kinda deal. "We'll over pay you and then surround you with talent in a few years."
As far as the talent required, I listened to MLB Network radio a lot this week and almost all of the former GMs and former players said Archer is at best a number 3 starter. Some qualified it as a number 3-4 on a great team, a 3 on a good team and a number 1 on the Padres or Braves.
I think he is more of a name than an Ace these days. I think it would a solid deal if he is dealt for 3 prospects that are B or greater but I doubt the Padres would have given up Quantrill for him.
I'm all about fairness and hate when in my franchise the same teams always are bad so a fair deal would be good. However, I wouldn't over pay for him.

I think Archer could be a solid #2. But look at the teams hes been on. Those Rays offenses have been terrible. That plays a big role for a pitcher. Knowing you HAVE to 9 out of 10 times throw a near flawless game to get the win, plays hard on the pitchers mentality that day

Have just decided to try something different. Since the Dodgers made several big time moves to acquire players such as Brian Dozier and Manny Machado, I have decided to start a new franchise using a post trade deadline roster and play as the Dodgers. However, I am going to simulate the entire 2018 regular season but try to keep the standings and any other computer made in-season trades as realistic and close to real life as possible. Am them going to pick up and start actually playing games at this season's post season. Am going to attempt to try and finally get the Dodgers a World Series Championship, and then am going to attempt to resign both Dozier and Machado long term. Should be interesting.

Lost the series opener to the Nationals 9-8 in extra innings. Hell of a game, aside from user control defensive miscues that hurt us badly. We trailed 7-0 after the 2nd inning but fought our way back. We took the lead in the 14th with a solo bomb by Paul DeJong to go up 8-7. Anthony Rendon tied it up with 1 out in the bottom of the 14th and then the wheels fell off completely and we ended up losing 9-8 in that inning.

To make matters worse, we lost Matt Carpenter for appx 2 weeks due to hamstring injury.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Re: MLB The Show 18 Franchise Discussion Thread

So I'm still playing '17 -- but I'm in 2018 with the Pirates now, so there's that. I guess I'll work my way to present day based on my memory. There's too much to put in 1 post.

I started with rosters from just before the Bucs traded Tony Watson, Antonio Bastardo, and just let Allen Hanson go. I also nerf'd Jung Ho Kang's rating so I could basically simulate his visa issues. My goal was to see if I could truly meet full potential for this team in the sense that Polanco, Cutch, and Marte finally hit on all cylinders, Tony Watson doesn't get the yips and force the Bucs hand to trade him, and this team actually contends for a Wild Card spot.

While I had issues up until July to get McCutchen going, Polanco, Marte, and Josh Bell kept the offense afloat. The rotation was anchored by solid pitching from Gerrit Cole (imagine if the Bucs considered more than just fastballs with him), Jameson Taillon, and Chad Kuhl. Right before the All-Star Break, I made moves to acquire Carter Capps from the Padres, and offload Antonio Bastardo and his 6.00 ERA to the Blue Jays for organizational depth in Jose Tabata (welcome back!). I then revamped the lineup to move Cutch to 2nd in the lineup to see if that gave him a better sim pitch selection. Exiting the break, we're 8 back of the Cubs.

Organizationally speaking, we had a killer rotation in Indianapolis, lead by A.J. Schugel and Steven Brault. Also contributing now was Mitch Keller, who earned a promotion with his sub 2.00 ERA in AA. Austin Meadows was playing above expectations, and was somehow an absolute UNIT leading the team in dingers. We got some aid in the form of a waiver acquisition, getting Rhys Hoskins from the Phils post deadline (his potential stinks on my roster, so they felt it'd be best to just let him go for free). I guess I'll have my own iteration of the "Bash Bros" that Hoskins was a part of in the Phils system

In Altoona, Ke'Bryan Hayes is also just mashing, and progressing nicely as well. We had a draft where we got lucky in getting a catcher that has a ML ready arm, who just needs to learn to hit. He's only 18, so he has plenty of time to mature that bat before joining the Bucs. We also added a SS who can mix right in on opening day 2018 in the second round. We added a guy in the 3rd who could slot into the rotation as well for 2018, then hit the jackpot in the 7th round by drafting a pitcher based on his last name, Gehrig. He's the best pitcher in the draft. At just 18, he's already 66 OVR and has a 96 POT! Things are looking up down the stretch and into the future for the Bucs!

Appreciate the feedback millertime and Kenp. In the end... I pulled the trigger on both moves.

With Archer having a great season, I figured the Rays would be looking to sell high on him, and its the right move for this Pads team to accelerate the rebuild a bit. His contract is super favorable too -

For Archer I traded Michel Baez (A potential, the prize of the trade), Anderson Espinoza (B Potential, but only a 62 Overall) and 1B Josh Naylor (also B Potential - Rays were desperate for a 1B, but hes only a 59).

Both Espinoza and Naylor are a couple of years away easily but Baez could crack the Rays team next year and pitch well for them.

I also made the move for Britton - first trading Chasen Shreve to the Twins to acquire Kennys Vargas as a back up 1B for the year.

                Dillon Tate (B Potential)
                Domingo Acevedo (B)
                and Tyler Austin (A)

Austin's potential is super high in this game, and I hope he doesnt come back to bite me as he was having a great season, but Britton's an 85 and has been great for the O's. (I may consider re-signing him).

Here's to hoping I can secure a WS for my Yanks this year .. if I do win, my attention will probably shift to the Pads for 2019. I imagine both Tatis and Mejia will be getting call ups.

After 39 games in the 2018 season the Colorado Rockies sit at 26-13 good for 2nd in the division behind the Dodgers by half a game. Also good for the 4th best record in the Majors.

The team ranks 2nd in BAA at .281 3rd in HRs and top 5 in the other major offensive categories. The offense is clicking.

Blackmon and Arenado have 30 RBIs both hitting over .340 with 7 and 11 HRs respectively. Story has been great. .311 11 HR 26 RBI

I'm pleased with the start however aside from deGrom 6-1 1.69 ERA 0.87 WHIP (yea I traded for him and McCullers, win-now mode) and McCullers 4-1 2.98 ERA 1.13 WHIP my back 3 rotation has been iffy. Marquez,Freeland and Bettis all have ERAs in the 5's.

The bullpens strengths have come behind Ottovino, McGee, and Rusin all having all star calibar seasons. The rest of the pen has been struggling. Davis finally back on track still posing a 2.92 ERA in just 12.1 innings.

I've already traded for 2 very good Starters. However if the rest of the rotation doesnt get hot I'll be considering another trade for a SP. Plan B is a solid proven arm to bolster the pen to take pressure off offese. 2018 WS I got my eye on you. Sorry Dodgers.

                    September Callups:
SPs Alec Hanse, David Paulino, Nate Pearson and RP Miguel Castro were called up, however for some reason the sim engine mostly played Nate Pearson, who had a 5.40 ERA through 10 IP. Alec Hansen Also had trouble, but Paulino and Castro didn't give up a run in the 5 combined innings they pitched. CF Harrison Bader batted .333 in 9 plate appearances.

                    PLAYOFF MATCHUPS

AL Wildcard: BAL Orioles vs. LA Angels
The Orioles batting lineup features rookie Austin Meadows hitting .283 with 17 HR, D.J. LeMahieu hitting .277 with 8 HR, and Jake Lamb hitting .285 with 31 HR. They also have Jurickson Profar, Domingo Santana, Robinson Cano, Brandon Belt, and Ronald Acuna Jr., with Kevin Pillar sitting on the bench. Pretty deep team. They will be sending ace SP Corey Kluber to the mound for the wild card game, who owns a 16-11 record adn 3.13 ERA with 227 SO and 1.17 WHIP in 216.0 IP.

Angels will be countering with Madison Bumgarner, who has a 16-9 record and 234 SO with a 2.40 ERA and 0.96 WHIP through 243.1 IP. Their lineup features Josh Reddick with 23 HR and batting .281, Buster Posey with 14 HR batting .285, Justin Upton with 42 HR batting .292, Justin Turner and also Scooter Gennett, batting an absurd .322 with 31 HR.

Neither team has much coming out of the bullpen, look for this one to be a pitching duel.

NL Wildcard: ATL Braves vs. CHI Cubs
The Cubs sport a tough lineup, especially in the heart of the order with .298 hitting Teoscar Hernandez, .297 hitting Freddy Freeman (39 HR), and Mike Moustakas and Carlos Gonzales. Also Ozzie Albies in the 6-hole, but Freeman and Hernandez have been leading the way. They will be sending Gio Gonzalez out to the mound, who owns a 17-8 record with 204 SO, 3.45 ERA and 1.28 WHIP through 211.0 IP.

Braves will counter with Zack Greinke, who was 11-10 with 204 SO, 3.10 ERA and 1.07 WHIP through 218.0 IP. Led by power hitters J.D Martinez (30 HR, .311), Kris Bryant (31 HR, .283) and Jose Abreu (28 HR, .316), the Braves will look to uncork the long ball against the Cubs.

Should be more high scoring than the AL Wildcard but will wait and see. Stay tuned for updates!

The Cubs defeat the Braves in the NL Wildcard Game to move on to face the Giants in the NLCS. Freddie Freeman went 4/5 with a double and 2 solo shots. Gio Gonzalez got the win, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing 8 hits. Greinke had the same exact line as it was tied 3-3 through 5, and then the cubs scored 5 in innings 6 and 7 on the Braves bullpen to ice it.

Cubs now face the Giants, led by Miguel Cabrera (.326, 33 HR), Shin-Soo Choo (.293, 18 HR), and Byron Buxton in the OF, as well as a starting rotation of Chris Sale (CY Young runner up) and John Lester.

Hello OS community. (I did create my own thread, but thought this was more of an appropriate place to post my question)

I just had a quick question. I have this fascination with rebuilding my Toronto Blue Jays with a strong system, however, I noticed that I really have 3 years until my contract as a GM comes to end which happened yesterday. I finally had a deep farm system and since I did not make the playoffs and/or be above 500 for three years I got canned.

My question is, is there a way to turn of goals for the GM or is this something I have to deal with? My solution yesterday was to start over, make the playoffs in year one and then start dealing, but it seemed disingenious.

Also, there is no facial scan of Gibbons.

Yes you can turn off GM contracts but you have to choose at the start of the franchise. It’s one of those options you see when you start up your franchise, you can’t go back and change any of those once you advance through the screen and start it up.

If you turn it to Off at the start of the franchise you can’t be fired.

I have the difficulty set a bit lower while I still get used to the game. Does the sim happen on the same difficulty? I don't want to get distorted results.

I don't believe difficulty level has any effect on the simulation of a game. I don't have definitive proof, but I seem to recall at some point over the years this being discussed and it being said that difficulty level doesn't effect simulated games.

                                Sorry for double post but:

We lost again to the Nationals, this time 4-3 in 9 innings. Once again our starter was forced to leave early as Jack Flaherty was only able to go 4 innings before a lat strain forced him out of the game and onto the 10 Day DL. Our tired bullpen tired to hold the lead but couldn't as Mitch Moreland hit a 2 run homer off of Dean Kiekhefer to put the Nats ahead 4-3 in the 8th. We couldn't push across the tying nor go ahead run.

With Flaherty hitting the DL, Luke Weaver was called up to take his spot in the rotation. Weaver had a good Spring but struggled a bit in Memphis. Hopefully he can pitch well in his two starts for us in St.Louis.

Series finale tomorrow as Miles Mikolas will square off against Joe Ross.
