Wow, lots to read here. I have a question for you guys.

It's been a few years since I have had a PS4 and The Show - I am probably buying a PS4 very soon. I know we don't know exactly how 19' will be. Is 17' better than 18'? If you had to choose one, which would it be?

Pardon my ignorance (I just forget) can the older games have their rosters updated? If so, do people still put them together for the older versions?

In all likelihood I will just buy 19 when it comes out. But I'm itching for some baseball right now, just wanted your opinion. I remember reading before that a lot of people were down on 18 and that seems to still be the case. And that is a bummer.

I was like you and bought a ps4 for mostly the Show. I never really ventured into here but I would say it’s worth buying a ps4 for. RBI baseball is a nice iOS game. Show 18 is awesome but show 19 not sure. A lot of hate for this game but as a sports game it’s top notch

If you can find a good deal get a PS4 Pro. The game runs super smooth on the pro and not so much on the regular PS4. Maybe you won’t notice it when you have a regular PS4 but when I came to a friend’s house and we played a game on the regular PS4 I noticed it immediately.

I have to say with confidence that '17 is the GOAT baseball game. It replaced World Series Baseball 2K1 on Dreamcast for me, and I had that as #1 for so long. That's just me.

I was loyal to Microsoft for a long time, but I had to buy a PS4 to finally play the Show. Never regretted it. A lot of people here do not think '19 is going to be good, but I hope it's better than '18. '18 wasn't bad or anything, but it has its flaws for sure.

The only reason I'd get something other than 19 is to fill the void until it releases.

I'm pretty exciting to get back into it, think the last one I had was 14 so I'm pretty stoked.

The main reason I have a PS4 is for baseball. Been a huge fan of the show since day 1. But as everyone else said it's starting to get stale and the 18 the show wasn't that good at all. I play for th RTTS. So much was wrong with it this year and they never fixed it or patched it from day 1. I play Shortstop and on a double play situation a groundball to 1st the 1stbaseman in any situation would run and tag 1st then throw to 2nd in which case you NEVER do that in real baseball fundamentals and the pitcher never would attempt to run to 1st to cover. And yes a small blooper line drive you never could catch it it go right through the player.. I hate the caps to on players.. and non of the perks you choose actually work. Fastball only doesnt work anymore I get everything but a fastball. Theirs so many glitches in the game that were called out since Day 1 that was never fixed. And in RTTS allow to choose your team at start this season I went back to 17 to create a player and bring it over because rtts was horrible

Loved 17 the show. I bought it mainly for the special edition Griffey container. But it's a great game totally better than 17 the show. Not much difference.
19 will be the last year I buy it if it doesn't get better

SCEA can’t win on this, but honestly, I’d prefer they use the model they have the last 10-15 years, as opposed to what EA does.

There’s kind of two schools of thought on sports games development. For The Show they created a solid base game and have built on it year after year, assuring incremental changes and improvements. That’s the way I like it, because we know the game is solid and it will be every year. But that means we’re never going to be, “wowed,” by any major changes.

Look at Madden, when a new console comes out they completely tear the game down, re-do the engine, everything. They re-write it from scratch and the game is terrible for 3-4 years and slowly gets better. Right about the time the game is back to being good, they start the process all over, and the game sucks again.

For me, I’ll take small improvements, year in and year out, on a game that’s exceptional.

I don’t disagree that The Show has flaws. And I’m almost entirely just an offline franchise guy, so I’m aggravated as anyone that franchise mode gets neglected pretty much every year, but at the end of the day, The Show is the best baseball game (and arguably the best sports game) I’ve ever played. And to be honest it’s not really very close.

These are great points and I agree with you that SDS should stick to one engine and improve on the base game year after year. BUT, I think it would be highly beneficial for them to tear down the current engine and rebuild a new engine every 10 years. They can’t keep this same engine forever, it gets boring as hell.

It’s one of the reasons having multiple MLB games is so great because you can try them all out and enjoy the various different presentations they offer. Different engines, different animations, different models, different modes. So hopefully for the PS5 they rebuild a new engine. And they can use it for the next two generations.

That will not happen until 2 things occur

1. People speak with their wallets

2. SCEA meets a rival that will make a baseball game

For now they will continue to throw slight improvements to anything but the most important thing which is gameplay

And judging by the thread of Q/A I read through like 12 pages of members asking questions to CUJO who got the game early

And was very sad to see nobody asked any gameplay related questions, it was all about laundry and face scans.

Until that does not change the game will continue to do as little as possible and reap the rewards yearly

1. Most of the people on OS have seen the gameplay streams. Those answered most of our questions.

2. We can see CujoMatty's impressions on gameplay in the impressions thread.

3. I asked about gameplay.

Face scans and uniforms are simple yes or no questions that can be answered easily. People tend to both ask and answer these questions in this early stage every cycle. Not much point in asking the more complex gameplay questions now, any answer you're going to get is anecdotal. People need much more hands on time with the game in order to answer those questions accurately.

Like CujoMatty said when answering a gameplay related question, he's only bunted once. Guess you missed that?
