Re: HDR on or Off?
Got one of the new Samsung QLEDs and was really disappointed with the HDR until I finally managed to turn off all of the post processing BS and turn on game mode, then it actually looked good.
Before it had the same effect as you said, seemed to wash out the brightness of the screen. And yes, while I'm not %100 behind the show's HDR implementation, it does make a difference and it does look better IMO. It was pretty crazy it an afternoon game to see how the light effected the colour on uniforms as outfielders walked in and out of the shadows cast by the light scaffolding on their way into the dugout after the inning.
Although not necessarily better for gameplay. Last game was an evening game at the White Sox, and that Sun could not set fast enough.

Re: HDR on or Off?
Just want to throw this out there, I have an OLED E8 and when playing the show HDR turned on during day games, game is beautiful, but during night games, the game dims randomly, then will brighten back up, then rinse repeat. So annoying.
Anyone else have this issue? Any way to fix this? Happens with Madden 19 as well during night games.Comment

Sounds possibly like a dynamic contrast setting on your tv.

It's really weird, I have that set to off and all of that processing set to off in game mode HDR and it still does this. Will take another look. Extremely annoying.Sounds possibly like a dynamic contrast setting on your tv.

Re: HDR on or Off?
Could be an issue with the input (ie MLB the Show itself). OLED is a cool but weird technology. Pixels are self-illuminating, which is why you can get some great colours with amazing blacks in the same frame. The PS4 may be telling your TV to be dimmer (for whatever reason) and your TV may be re-adjusting. Bit errors may be causing the occasional dimming of your screen.Just want to throw this out there, I have an OLED E8 and when playing the show HDR turned on during day games, game is beautiful, but during night games, the game dims randomly, then will brighten back up, then rinse repeat. That's a long shot explanation though, more likely it's a firmware or software issue. Is it an issue with any other media, or is it just the Show?Comment

Re: HDR on or Off?
Great explanation, and this is what I've thought as well. It happens with Madden 19 only night games on Xbox One X and The Show 19 on PS4 Pro only night games. Won't happen with Uncharted 4, Mortal Kombat 11, etc or other games that I have whether during the day or night.Could be an issue with the input (ie MLB the Show itself). It happened with NHL 18 on PS4 with the really bright white ice, but then got better and is fine with NHL 19 on PS4.
So strange and annoying. I've googled it and others have the same issue and there's a way to disable it by going into the service menu and all of that, but I don't want to do all of that.Last edited by csamuelsvt; 06-07-2019, 09:15 AM.Comment

Re: HDR on or Off?
i know this is an old thread but it was very useful.
I didnt even know what HDR was until I accidently discovered my tv has it and referred to this thread.
I have somewhat new (3mo) TCL 55 inch tv and turned the HDR option on and it looks great!Comment

I have a Sony x950g. HDR is very well done on this TV so I use it when available, at the price I paid it better be.Comment

Re: HDR on or Off?
I just picked up a Samsung Q70 (55”) this past week and WOW, this game cooks now...graphically!!! Still playing on the Faster setting with Game Mode on. I honestly did not find Balanced or Sharper worth fiddling with due to the framerate dips.
It plays very smooth and looks very realistic beyond what I was expecting. The only toning down I did was to the color so as not to make things look cartoonish.

Re: HDR on or Off?
That actually might be an OLED issue, look up ABL issues. It's a limitation on the OLED technology that can't be turned off.Just want to throw this out there, I have an OLED E8 and when playing the show HDR turned on during day games, game is beautiful, but during night games, the game dims randomly, then will brighten back up, then rinse repeat. Re: HDR on or Off?
Yeah, Oleds are not the best choice for HDR. LCD is still the way to go, especially when they have a lot of local dimming zones to enhance the contrast ratio.Comment

I have an LG Oled C7 and no problems during night games for me."When it's all set and done, reality is the best innovation."Comment

Re: HDR on or Off?
Quite the opposite. OLEDs have much better contrast. The advantage a good LCD has is it can get much brighter which is usually important since most gamers play in lit rooms. In the dark, OLED is more impactful HDR performance.Comment

Re: HDR on or Off?
That's what I was getting at, Oleds do not meet the HDR standard you can get from LCDs due to weak peak nits.Comment
