What to do with a declining veteran?

I have Dustin Pedroia and he's not playing up to snuff. He still has a few years on his contact and he's been a leader for the party decade, as you know. Id like to get Michael Chavis up in my franchise but I'm not sure what to do with Pedroia.

What would you do with your ailing veterans that have been a big part of your team and have years left?
Just like to hear some different opinions, thanks.

If ur trying to be realistic maybe have pedroia and Chavis split time. If u want to be a little less realistic than keep him on the bench or cut him. If realism doesn’t affect u then trade him. I think, like u said, he has been a leader for this team for a decade or so so the Red Sox would be more likely to just slightly diminish his role a little. All IMO

I have Brett Gardner who regressed a lot and we signed him to a franchise friendly 1 year deal. But we have a log jam in the OF and he is barely playing anymore. He is on the block and if I could get even a decent “C” prospect I will take it.

Yankees franchise in ‘18 I had to cut Sabathia, who’s been a great Yankee and is one of my favorite players of all time in real life. Teams cut players in a dignified way in real life too ... IE Yankees with A-Rod, Mariners with Ichiro, etc etc.

My problem is I have Holt and Nunez on the bench doing good and Pedroia hitting below the mendoza line. I don't want to drop Pedroia or the guys doing well, so I'm stuck right now. I could injury him like IRL but I feel like that would be cheating especially when he's playing so poorly. I may just wait for Chavis to force my hand since he's not doing good in AAA right now anyway.
Thanks for the feedback so far guys. [emoji106]

Sadly, not shocked considering the lack of attention and detail rosters are getting nowadays. It's so frustrating

I never realized that, I'm playing with a CAP version of him before the first roster update came out.

I'd definitely NOT use SDS' Chavis. OSFM (or whatever the kids are calling it these days) rather instead

Re: What to do with a declining veteran?

A few times, I’ve “encouraged” old veterans to retire at the end of the season by editing their ratings way down. Pretty much always works. I feel bad about doing it, but it’s better than having them languish in free agency, which just seems sad. And I don’t want to keep paying them and using a roster spot in future years if they aren’t good enough to contribute.

Midseason, though, that isn’t an option, of course. I typically would start platooning them, ideally having them play vs. lefties (if the ratings allow for it) because that puts them on the field the least amount. I feel like that’s more dignified than just outright benching them or sending them down, and it still lets a younger guy play and contribute. With old starters, I’ll move them to the pen. Old closers become regular relievers. Basically, reduce their role while still letting them have their sendoff moments.

To ensure I don’t find myself in a situation where a player has a big contract with multiple years left (a situation where they’d be less likely to retire in real life because they want to keep getting paid), I rarely offer multiyear contracts that extend past 34 years old. I feel much better about manually retiring a guy when his contract is up, he isn’t contributing to my team, and his attributes have declined to the point that he couldn’t help another team.

I would manually injure him, despite it not being the most dignified way to do a player who has been so good to a franchise, I think its what happens a lot of times IRL. Players get put on the IL for minor injuries that they cannot seem to shake. They are more valuable hurt, but still on the team, than they are on the bench or the minors.

He is old, has bad knees, he is trying to fight through it, and it does not seem to be working IRL. So why not bring that same "story line" into your Franchise?

Manually injure him, make it last a couple months, when he is healthy send him to AA on "rehab" for a week or two and see where you are then. Your bench may not be as good, you may have lost other players to legit injuries, or traded someone away.....or maybe he gets hurt again (see Tulo).

During the off-season you then figure out what you want to do. Like someone said, maybe lowering his stats to 0 will force him to retire. Again, this is not that different than what I think is happening and will happen IRL at this point.

As a side note, I would also add another position for him maybe 1B (if he doesn't have that already).
He gets to fill in at 1B and DH to give someone a spell every now and then when healthy. It is a less demanding position and gets his bat in lineup every now and then. Maybe even make him your 1B during the AA rehab. It sounds like you are trying to do the right thing AND make it realistic, so I think little things like that will help you sell it, to yourself :-)

I try not to look at the ratings to much and pay more attention to production. It seems that certain "former stars" have something under the hood that keeps them productive despite ratings. For instance I have Curtis grabderson 3rd on my team in home rubs right now and he has dropped all of the way to 62 overall. I would say keep using him to his strengths and when he starts to really crap the bed he will probably be close to retiring anyway. He's like 34 or 35 now anyway so he probably will be off your books before you know it

I just manually injured Matt Carpenter on the Cards to bring up Nolan Gorman for some games. Sometimes you just have to make your own story if you want to get rid of a player for a bit. That's typically what I do. Injuries lead to players getting their chance all the time so why not?

I just send them out on an iceberg.

Seriously though, it's tough at times. I will resign them to cheap 1 year deals and lower their overall so they still retire on my team.
