So why is anyone surprised that game development isn’t any different. All you have to do is watch one episode of shark tank, and the first question they always ask when it’s a manufactured product is “what’s the cost per unit”? Followed by “what’s your total sales”? I am not convincing myself that DD is the problem anymore. Because truth be told even if DD didn’t exist they would still be trying to sell as many units with as little resources dedicated as possible. That’s business 101.

Franchise modes use to sale games. It simply doesn’t anymore. I have long accepted it.

That is the bottom line right there. So we gotta make the most of what we get. Been doing that and having that philosophy about sports games since we went to the PS4 for The Show.

It’s funny I went back and played MLB 11 on the PS3 yesterday. Yes there are things I miss. Little things like the newspapers....I loved those. The marketing and stadium/facility up keep. Just little touches....not that it really was super important. But it was nice.

The real time presentation.....folks it took me 3 hours to finish just one game. Letting every single animation, scene whatever play out. All the batter steps outs, all of it.

    3 hours.

On MLB 14-20 it takes me on average....1.5 hours to finish a full 9 inning game playing every pitch, every inning and letting all the cut scenes play out etc. Yeah....I will never finish a full 162 on MLB 11 playing 3 hour plus games.

However.....the fact you could “x” through it was nice for those who did not want all that.

But SDS made a decision to streamline presentation. And it has been streamlined more and more every year. It is what it is.

Back to MLB 11. For it’s time....it was amazing. Compared to todays MLB 20....not even close. Gameplay is simply far better today than yesteryear. We tend to always romantisize about older games....especially on PS2 and now PS3.

The only game IMO on the PS3 sports wise that plays better than today’s offering is NBA 2K11. It was and still is the best basketball game I have ever played. I stopped at NBA 2K18 (which is a damn fine game).

My entire point is....I would not trade the gameplay of MLB 20 for the franchise features of say MLB 11 or MLB 17 (the user interface on 17 was the last one I loved).

I hate when little things are taken away. But I make it all work with MLB 20 because the gameplay is simply that incredible.

It is a giant give and take with sports games folks. And it has been for over a decade now.

No at this point we probably won't get anything until April 1st.

This is one of the wisest, most balanced posts on OS.

We romanticize old video games for sure. I fired up NCAA on ps2 and forgot how long the loading times were when weeks were simming...elevator rides on Mass Effect, for sure...

People just aren't going to notice issues that pop up later if they tap out before getting there.

Lacks depth for who, though? For me, you, and probably most of the guys here who have been playing The Show for years and years? Yeah.

For the player who maybe just plays DD and is thinking about getting into Franchise, or someone who usually just plays exhibition casually, or even a former season mode player...is it lacking depth for them? Are they overwhelmed by the options that currently exist?
            Referencing the last part there.

What you say makes sense, we are all obviously just guessing, even sds since they don't have the data around a deep franchise mode to analyze.

However, I know that I haven't bought the game in 3 years and have had no reason to spread positive reviews about it to potentially get others into the game during that time. We are obviously a minority here, but I don't think that it's out of the question that there are more players out there like us who are just wanting a sim experience or who would be willing to try it if there was not reason to be jaded about the mode.

Secondly, looking at the broader picture, I think you could argue that the variations between a DD and a bare bones franchise mode don't offer enough of a new experience for a DD player to really explore that side of sports gaming. In a certain sense a DD player already has the same goals of a franchise player in that they are trying to build the best team that they can. In DD it's done through card packs and in franchise it's through FA and trades. If the roster management within the franchise mode lacks depth though then it minimizes the reasons that someone might transition from DD to Franchise.

edit - An analogy that I would make here is that I never really cared much for RTTS. I played a bit in it's first iteration because it was new, but it got old pretty quick. In later years it was something that I would dabble in it while I waited for community rosters to start my franchise. Eventually I started to sink more time into that mode though as they expanded it, and that's basically what I think could happen in real effort was put into franchise.

Regarding the separate discussion of pay to play in franchise, I would be completely against it. That's a discussion that I could entertain if it were not a yearly release as I would argue we were already in a pay to play environment for 20 years before DD and MUT became a thing with full priced yearly releases and incremental improvements with roster updates. I would not want then pay a premium on top of that model just to get a decent franchise mode.

Or April 1st is the day the forum breaks out into factions as it becomes PS users blaming Xbox users for the lack of significant changes to franchise.

                  Anything is possible.

These companies are making a business decision not to invest in that side of the game.

Lack of competition is another nail in our coffin.

SOMEONE would have invested in franchise if their competition did not.

Can say what you want about Madden, but after the outcry people had, Madden has made pretty big strides in franchise mode. Modified trade logic. Progression, almanac , signing logic.

These are all things the Show must do this year or I consider it a bust.

I am having a blast with Madden 21 and yes I am enjoying their franchise mode and some of the updates we have gotten this year.

The Show does need to step up with some real logic improvements. No question.

But man the gameplay of The Show is second to none in sports games.

If EA or 2K got in on baseball they would be competition for SDS alright.

                          Competition for those DD dollars.

They’d be doing the exact same thing. DD, UT, MyTeam....

But at least there would be a choice. Which one would do franchise better.

You hit the nail here EA would love feeding the MUT mode in a baseball game. that's all those promos would be about I would trust the Show more still with a franchise mode over EA

If nothing much gets done with franchise this year other then stadium creator, I think it’ll be about time for The Show community to come together and have their own #FixMaddenFranchise moment. We’ll see but I think that might be what’s it’s going to take. If it worked with EA, it’ll probably do something with SDS.
