Re: MLB the Show 21 Impressions Thread

I played a couple of games yesterday and I am still annoyed that I can't view the ticker. Changed the resolution of my tv like I said earlier and double and triple checked that I was using the right camera and still nothing.

The bat sound doesn't really bother me and I also notice that the fielding and in graphic motions are a little bit better than in the past. I have yet to experience any frame rate issues, but then again I don't play online and stick to Franchise mode.

Haven't played since PS3 in 2013 and I don't feel like I've missed anything. I hope it's taken as a compliment not an insult, but it seems like the same game after a few exhibitions. Beyond the white glow around players on Xbox Series X it looks and feels great in HDR. I'm a clean-screen, auto-fielding player so I won't notice new mechanics in that area, but the core gameplay hasn't changed in years and this is still the best sports sim around. I'll dive into franchise/rtts and provide more detailed impressions by the weekend. Super excited to have baseball back on Xbox, but not blown away like I expected to be.

Edit: I looked up MLB 14 videos to make sure I wasn't tripping.....You tell me.

What system are you on? I'm pretty sure ps4 and ps5 both have a screen size option in the consoles setting.

So is it just me or are base roster potentials waaay off from what they should be?

It feels like there are way too many undeserving A's. Lewis Brinson with a career .189 batting average has a 93 Potential while Jake Cronenworth has 74.

Having a top prospect doesn't feel that special when there are so many of them.

The more I play, the more clipping & collision detection issues I'm noticing smh. I get that some form of clipping will happen in video games so I'm not trying to nit pick.

However, I'm seeing stuff like the catcher running completely through my batter's body to catch pop ups. Baserunners running completely through an infielders body. Outfielders clipping through the ball boy's body attempting to catch fly balls. The 1st baseman's arm clip through my on base runner on pick off attempts, etc.

I'm on PS5 and I expected better in this area. This type of stuff totally kills immersion & has to go. They need to either add real time physics or severely clean up their collision detection. As a casual baseball fan, I really want to get into this game because it's great other than the clipping issues. It's putting a damper on my experience. Hopefully it can be cleaned up in a patch.

I had to double check because I doubted myself after reading your reply.

But no 100% the series X version has no video options at all.

I would say the players are close to 4K but the ground textures are really low resolution.

that's because the show has been using the same grass and dirt texturing from the PS3 era.

It's not as noticeable during an at bat, but it's definitely noticeable during fielding and it's particularly bad in cut scenes. I saw someone on Twitter called it MLB The Slide Show for Xbox One, and while that's a really funny comment, it hits a little too close to the truth sometimes.
Downloaded this on my One S and yeah, the frame rate is really bad in several areas, as you mentioned fielding and cutscenes being two in particular. Hitting can be choppy at times, too. I know the One S is basically an OG Xbox One, but still you'd expect a smoother performance than what we currently have. Really missing the performance options (HDR on/off, faster/balanced, etc.) that were in the last few editions and accessible on the PS4 Pro.

I was just about to post about this. yesterday when I posted about framerate on xbox one S it was real choppy but today at least offline it's much more improved. Almost like last year's ps4 but not quite there yet. I dont know if SDS fixed it or something happened but I played some exhibition games today and it was much better.

I also did some DD conquest and it was iffy. Framerate at some ballparks was good, while others it was really bad.

I hope they figure it out and fix it.

The game is ok, but there's just inexcusable stuff..

2 years in a row Gleyber Torres as 2b? He didn't play a single inning at 2B last year according to baseball reference. This is 2 years in a row..

Things like Dan Winkler at SP. How? Is there oversight? It takes the average player 5 minutes to notice this. Imagine Madden coming out with Travis Kelce listed as a RB. It makes no sense.

Played 5inn exhibition game on the Xbox-X. My Braves vs. the Angels. I like the way SDS kept the gameplay functionality similar to the playstation for those of who changed systems.

It plays great out the box! Visually impressive with the usage of a 4K T.V. with HDR.

Gameplay wise, OF Ozuna blasted two HR's. He did his signature move at 3B like he was going for a layup.

His 2nd HR was a game tying one. After he touched home plate. There was 3 teammates standing outside the dugout. He gave one a high 5, another one low five & the last one was the jumping high-5. It immersed me into game tying it at 3-3...

While the game is playing good, the crowd interaction is driving me absolutely crazy. I'm sorry but it's downright atrocious. I would say a solid 50% of the time, the crowd is giving off either the wrong reaction or no reaction at all.

-Home team smacks a double in the gap.. silence.
-Home team grounds out to end the inning leaving a runner on third stranded.... Cheers..?
-random pitch taken in 4th inning.... Loud ovation?
                          -home team diving catch.... Silence.

It's awful. It's killing immersion and it's painfully noticable with the commentary off. It's a complete toss up on how they will react and it seems worse this year than in prior years.

I’m seeing a crazy amount of overthrows from the outfield on base hits. A simple throw from left field to the cutoff and its way over his head, allowing the runners to advance. I’ve seen this 6+ Times in maybe 20 games
