Braves win first World Series since 1995

Yankees manager Aaron Boone is going to have a fun offseason dealing with the New York media. His decision to start Jordan Montgomery in Game 5 of the World Series - after not pitching at all this postseason - blew up spectacularly. The Braves struck for seven first-inning runs, highlighted by Austin Riley's bases-clearing double, to beat the Yankees 9-5 and clinch the World Series in five games.

Montgomery recorded exactly one out, on his first pitch no less, in allowing six of the runs (all earned). New York fought back, getting home runs from Aaron Judge, Kyle Higashioka and Giancarlo Stanton, but couldn't overcome the early deficit. New York had a golden opportunity in the fourth. Down 9-2, the Yankees loaded the bases with one out. Stanton drew a walk to bring in a run, but Mike Soroka struck out Aaron Hicks and reliever A.J. Minter came in to strike out Higashioka to end the threat.

Minter earned the win with 1.1 innings of perfect relief. Shane Greene, Tyler Matzek, Diego Castillo and Will Smith closed out the final innings. Greene allowed a two-run homer to Stanton after a Riley error prolonged the inning. Otherwise, the Braves bullpen was perfect.

Ozzie Albies, who hit .375 with three homers and nine RBIs in the Series, was named World Series MVP.

Looking back, my bullpen was strong just about all season. I really didn't need to add at the deadline, but when the Rays put Castillo on the block I had to inquire. What a huge move that turned out to be. Castillo had a sub 1 ERA for the postseason, and he took over as the primary setup guy when Martin went into his funk. He faced the heart of the Yankees lineup in the eighth, and set them down in order.

Cardinals pitching concerns becoming a reality this Spring

The Cardinals had concerns heading into Spring Training about their pitching staff, especially starting pitching, and if the last two games are any indication, its becoming a reality.

The Cardinals pitching staff has yielded 32 runs on 48 hits, including 12 homeruns. No folks, that is not a typo. The Cards pitching staff has been absolutely rocked over the last 17 innings.

The Cardinals had concerns about their staff and tried to address those concerns this winter, but they missed on the big time free agent pitchers and were spurned by Jake Odorizzi (Mariners) and Matthew Boyd (Reds) who chose to not re-sign and seek new places.

The Cards looked to add MLB caliber arms to the staff but thus far that's not proving to be a viable solution. Even the youngsters they had hoped could fill the gaps, are struggling this Spring, although Matthew Liberatore has yet to pitch this Spring.

There are free agent options available and the Cards may be forced to turn that direction if things don't improve dramatically relatively quickly. One notable name that the Cards nearly submitted an offer too late in the winter is Max Scherzer, who pitched with the Angels last year. His ERA was 4.01, but he primarily worked out of the bullpen due to the Angels extraordinary depth at starting pitching. The Angels addressed bullpen concerns and had no need for Scherzer's services.

I don't know if the Cardinals will reach out to him, and if so, if Scherzer has the bullets left in his 39 year old arm to be an every 5th day starter. One thing that is known, is the Cardinals had better figure something out, and quickly or this could be a long season, that wastes the offensive improvements made this offseason.

Re: MLB The Show 21 Franchise Discussion Thread

I feel like I've played almost every baseball game ever made: Hardball, Earl Weaver Baseball, Tony La Russa Baseball, Front Page Sports Baseball, 2K Sports Major League Baseball and almost all the MLB The Shows since the PS3 generation. Heck, I've even played baseball board games like Pursue the Pennant and Status Pro Baseball.

I've played thousands and thousands of games.

But tonight was the first time I've ever thrown a perfect game. Never even came close to a no-hitter in my thousands and thousands of games. To say I was nervous in the final three innings would be the understatement of the century. It was a 1-0 victory so any small error could have cost me the game, nevermind the perfecto.

José Berríos in Game 13 of my Blue Jays dynasty (now just 5-8) threw the 98-pitch, 13-strikeout gem against the Yankees in my Show 21 PS5 dynasty. I had a couple of full counts and a drive to deep left centre that almost got over the head of Lourdes Gurriel Jr. I play on all-star level with the pitch meter.

I'm pretty wired up right now after that. LOL

I'll post some screenshots and videos later. I saved them to the PS5.

Tigers Win Streak Ends at 3, Take 2/3 from Royals

Wow, what a series, in a series that the Tigers took 2 out of 3 in, they finish with a +1 differential after winning both of theirs by one and losing the finale 2-1.

Game One was pretty defensive, 13 total hits, Urena came out and pitched well for Boyd, and the bullpen held together well to win 4-3 after a 2 run 7th took the lead.

Game Two was the most electric affair I've been a part of this season. A 11-10 11 inning Victory that resulted in Jeimer Candelario hitting for the CYCLE, going 4:5 with 2 RBI. Nunez also had a good game, as he was only the easy parts from one as well, since he had a Triple and Homer. Well, that's the beauty of baseball, in every stadium you have to know how to respond to different hits, and in that DEEP right center field in Comerica, you better be digging deep looking for extra bases. Turnbull looked fantastic until he exploded in the 5th and allowed 7, on 2 big homers. The bullpen pitched will shockingly again and held enough to allow Detroit to win it.

Game Three was a defensive showcase. 9 total hits, and one where the Tigers may have had one more hit, but in the end, they had one less run and that's all that mattered. It was a duel between the two 24 year olds on the mound. Singer for the Royals was great, pitching 7 giving up 5 H and one run, where Skubal was equally as good going 7 as well, with 3 walks, 2 hits, and the one run. A Carlos Santana homer off of Tyler Chatwood (His first run allowed of the year in 4 appearances), gave the Royals the 1 extra run they needed, and the Tigers had no answer. On a day where they grounded into 4 DPs, sometimes that's just what you deserve.

The Tigers (13-25) welcome the Cubbies (13-23) to town for a 3-game set as the last leg of the homestand and will look to seal over .500 for the stand in the series. Probable Pitchers are Mize (0-6, 6.27) v. Alzolay (2-1, 3.50), Boyd (1-2, 2.68) v. Davies (1-3, 6.27), and Manning (0-1, 3.05) v. Mills (0-1, 3.00)

Finally, they also optioned Joe Jimenez to Triple A Toledo as he has struggled with an ERA of over 10 and a WHIP over 2. This move is the corresponding move to Matthew Boyd being activated off of the IL. Look for him to pitch in this upcoming series against the Cubs

Pederson cashes in on monster postseason

The exclusive free-agent signing period is over, and Joc Pederson was the big winner. Pederson gets a one-year, $19.5M deal to stay with Atlanta after winning the World Series. The outfielder was looking for a multi-year deal, but with Drew Waters and Michael Harris in the pipeline, we weren't willing to commit more than a year to him. It cost us financially. But we need his left-handed bat in the lineup.

Travis d'Arnaud also agreed to return to the Braves, signing a one-year, $7.6M deal. Neither Shea Langeliers nor William Contreras produced in the minors last year, so it was imperative we either bring d'Arnaud back or sign a veteran free agent.

We weren't, however, able to get Freddie Freeman to sign during the exclusive period. We offered him a six-year, $172M deal, which was a year more than we wanted to go. We're optimistic he'll still sign, but now he's on the open market.

Those three are the only ones we offered contracts to. Among other key contributors who are now free to sign with anybody:
                        • SP Charlie Morton
                        • RP Shane Greene, an All-Star last year
                        • 3B Pablo Sandoval, our top pinch-hitter last season

The Freddie Freeman drama didn't last long. He signed our six-year offer on the first day of unrestricted free agency. Glad to have him back.

We're through the end of November, and we made a few questionable moves. Winning a World Series got us a budget increase, but we still have to watch our finances.

Chris Martin and Shane Greene were huge parts of our bullpen last season. Martin is arbitration eligible, but was looking for more than $8M a year. Greene, a FA, was looking for something similar. We knew we couldn't bring Greene back, so we replaced him with fan favorite Craig Kimbrel at just less than $3M a year. Kimbrel's best days are behind him and he won't be asked to close, but he still throws upper 90s. We also signed Mychal Givens to a $1.9M a year deal. With both of them on board, we non-tendered Martin, who signed with the Padres. Greene got a one-year $10M deal from the Phillies.

In the outfield, we signed Jorge Soler to a one-year $4.2M deal and Leury Garcia to a one-year $5.4M deal. They'll both fortify the bench behind Acuna, Pederson and Ozuna with Garcia the most capable of playing center. Hated to do it, but we non-tendered Adam Duvall, who was looking for more than $6M a year in arbitration. He ended up signing with the Mets.

We're still looking for a backup catcher and utility infielder. We have our eyes on a couple of possibilities. We thought about bringing back Charlie Morton, but he's still looking for more than $11M a year, and we just can't do that.

Biggest move of the offseason so far is the Rangers signing Trevor Story. Carlos Correa, Javier Baez and Corey Seager are all expected to sign soon. The market has been hot for them.

                            Your 2022 Atlanta Braves ...

                            Lineup
                            1. Ronald Acuña Jr., CF
                            2. Ozzie Albies, 2B
                            3. Freddie Freeman, 1B
                            4. Marcell Ozuna, LF
                            5. Joc Pederson, RF
                            6. Travis d'Arnaud, C
                            7. Austin Riley, 3B
                            8. Dansby Swanson, SS

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. This is the same lineup we rolled out the majority of the time last October. Would have liked to have kept Acuña in RF, but this gives us our best lineup.

                            Bench
                            C - John Ryan Murphy
                            IF - Johan Camargo
                            IF - Kevin Newman
                            OF - Leury Garcia
                            OF - Jorge Soler

Camargo is the only holdover. Soler will start against lefties some and gives us a power bat off the bench. Garcia is primarily a CF but can play anywhere, so he'll get a lot of playing time.

                            Rotation
                            1. Mike Soroka (R)
                            2. Max Fried (L)
                            3. Ian Anderson (R)
                            4. Sean Newcomb (L)
                            5. Kyle Wright (R)

The top three were no-brainers. Touki Toussaint and Huascar Ynoa are higher-rated, but Kyle Wright had a good spring and at 26 it's put up or shut up time for him at the MLB level, so he gets the first crack at a rotation spot.

                            Bullpen
                            CL - Will Smith (L)
                            SU - Diego Castillo (R)
                            SU - Tyler Matzek (L)
                            MR - A.J. Minter (L)
                            MR - Luke Jackson (R)
                            MR - Craig Kimbrel (R)
                            MR - Mychal Givens (R)
                            LR - Felix Pena (R)

Castillo and Matzek were ready for bigger roles after their postseason performances. That made it easier to part ways with Chris Martin and Shane Greene, who were just too expensive to retain. Kimbrel and Givens are on the downsides of their careers, but we think they'll fit in well in middle relief.

                            Minors
As mentioned, Toussaint and Ynoa are ready to step in if needed in either the rotation or bullpen. Cristian Pache is no longer a top prospect, but we still think he has a bright future after a strong performance in the World Series. We want him playing every day though, so he'll start at Gwinnett. We hope Shea Langeliers will push for Murphy's job in the second half of the season. We'd really like Langeliers to be the Opening Day catcher in 2023.

For the most part, teams were able to retain their star players. But there were some big moves. Texas added Trevor Story and Noah Syndergaard. Detroit got the Seagers, adding both Corey and Kyle. The Cubs were able to retain Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant, but lost Javy Baez to the Phillies. Carlos Correa, the biggest name on the market after Freeman, signed with the Diamondbacks. Michael Conforto joined the Padres. And the Cardinals now have the most experienced catching tandem with Buster Posey joining Yadier Molina.

Tigers(16-25) Go 7-2 on Homestand, Sweep the Visting Cubs

The Detroit Tigers continue to roll through the month of May. In what may be the weakest month of their schedule, they continue to capitalize, going 7-2 on their last homestand, finishing with a sweep of the Cubs. Pitching was the key catalyst this series as they combined to only give up 8 runs, as opposed to the Tigers 15 that they put up on the Cub's pitching.

In Game 1, Mize looked to have finally hit that form that everyone has been expecting of him, going and getting a complete game, while giving up 2 ER on 10 Hits, 2 Walks, and 4 Ks, finally lowering that ERA to 5.43. Offensively Candy and Baddoo both hit bombs, and the Tigers scored 5 unanswered to take the W.

Game 2 was very dramatic, in a game where Boyd and Davies dueled it out, but it ultimately came down to the bottom nine, 1 out, where Jake Rogers hit a ball perfectly into the Right Center gap to score the 2 runs needed to take the game to extras. With a shutdown top 10, it took the Tigers, until Hitting Harold came up to drive in the winning run. But don't worry, this wasn't the last of the last inning heroics.

Game 3, almost a carbon copy to Game 2. All the way down to the final score, 4-3. Once again, the Tigers found themselves 3-1 down, after a Matt Duffy double to hit drive in two runs. Manning and Mills both found themselves out of it after 5, and it turned to the bullpens, and who would've thought, that the Tigers could claw back and shut them down. Schoop came up in the B6, and drove in 2 more of his RBIs on the day to tie, and that's where we were locked until B9, due to Jose Urena coming in and locking down the last two innings of the game, 2 innings pitched with no hits, no walks, and 4 Ks. It led to a leadoff Rogers double, in which Derek Hill came to the plate and drove him in.

This series was one to remember, and hopefully the Tigers can continue this level of play throughout the month. They now sit 12.5 GB in the Central after going 7-3 in their last 10, and 7.5 back in the Wild Card, a drastic improvement. They also currently hold the title for hottest team in the AL, with the best record out of anyone's last 10 games. They now face a short 6 game roadtrip, starting in Seattle(14-27) tomorrow for 3, then after an offday, 3 in Kansas City(19-21) before returning home.

By chance what was the 6 year offer, did it take team or player option as Ann add-on?
