Cardinals earn 2 game mini-series sweep of White Sox

The Cardinals (45-29) won both games of a mini-series against the White Sox in St.Louis to start the week. The Cardinals and Brewers are now tied atop the NL Central Division with the Cubs closing their gap to 6 games.

Max Scherzer got the ball on Monday night and didn't have his best stuff but did dodge his way thru 5 innings giving up 2 runs on 8 hits. He would get a no decision. The bullpen would prove to be effective pitching the final 4 innings without giving up a run and earning the victory as the Cards fought back to win 3-2. Alex Reyes recorded his 25th save in as many opportunities. Yadier Molina went 3 for 3 with an RBI, while Justin Williams would deliver the go-ahead/game winning RBI with a pinch hit RBI single in the 7th.

Game 2 Kwang Hyun Kim was just masterful. Pitching 7 innings of one run ball on just 3 hits with 11 strikeouts. Kim was pinch hit for in the 8th after topping 110 pitches thru 7 innings and leaving with a 4-1 lead. Jordan Hicks would give up a run in the 8th to make it 4-2, but Alex Reyes was given the ball again in the 9th and secured his 26th straight save. He has yet to blow a save this season.

The Cardinals tallied 4 runs despite being without Nolan Arenado who was injured in pre-game warmups (tricep), but newly signed Matt Carpenter filled in nicely going 3 for 4. The offense came in the 4th when Lane Thomas launched a grand slam into Big Mac Land in left field.

The Cardinals are off on Wednesday as they travel to Colorado for a 4 game weekend series with the Rockies. They will then fly back to Cincinnati for a 3 game set with the Reds and then to Chicago for a 3 game weekend series with the Cubs to conclude the first half of the season.

    Nolan Arenado back on IL

Nolan Arenado has landed back on the 10-Day IL with a tricep injury. Arenado felt discomfort in pre-game warmups Tuesday. After being checked out it was classified as a strained tricep and the All-Star 3rd baseman is expected to miss about 2 weeks.

Nick Dunn was recalled from Memphis to fulfill the vacant roster spot.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

ROYALS HAVE A TOUGH SERIES IN HOUSTON
          Game one:
          WP: L. McCullers (5-7)
          LP: B. Keller (10-9)

Michael Brantley hit a two out solo HR in the first off Brad Keller in the first to give the Astros a brief 1-0 lead, but the Royals would come back in the second. Carlos Santana walked to lead off the inning, and Joc Pederson doubled. Seuly Matias singled in the tying run.

Lance McCullers would then get Michael Taylor to ground into a double play, but the second run would score.

In the second, Brad Keller would get tore up. It started with a lack of command, and then after walking a run and allowing a sac fly, he grooved a pitch to Brantley who hit another HR to put the Astros up 6-2.

The Royals would score a couple more runs in the game, but the Royals bullpen wasn’t sharp and the Astros win 10-4.

          Game two:
          WP: F. Valdez (4-4)
          LP: K. Bubic (8-8)

Framber Valdez would start for Houston, and after an easy first inning, he would give up a solo HR to Seuly Matias to put the Royals ahead in the second.

The Astros offense though was too much for the Royals in this game as well, as they pushed a crossed six runs in the middle innings. Salvy would homer late to make it 6-3, but the Royals never threatened a comeback.

          Game three:
          WP: M. Minor (8-6)
          LP: J. Verlander (10-9)

The Royals got a much needed lift from Mike Minor, going seven innings and allowing one run. The offense was provided by RBI singles from Soler and Pederson, and a Hunter Dozier homer in. The bullpen got the last six outs to lock down the 4-1 win and avoid the sweep.

May 19th 2022: Bottom of the 3rd, 1 ball, 2 strikes and Miggy goes deep to left field for number 500 off Luis Garcia of The Houston Astros. That is his 3rd HR in the first 10 games of the new season. Unfortunately Houston prevailed 5-3 to continue Detroit's 3 game losing streak. Detroit is 4-6 on the season and looking to avoid the series sweep tomorrow in Houston as Justin Verlander faces Jose Urquidy.

IL Report: Spencer Turnbull is out 1-2 months with a separated shoulder. Matt Manning has been called up to replace him in the pitching staff. In 7 games last season Manning had a 5.60 ERA

Re: MLB The Show 21 Franchise Discussion Thread

SERIES IN SEATTLE HURTS PLAYOFF CHANCES
              Game one:
              WP: B. Singer (9-8)
              LP: C. Flexen 5-8)
              J. Staumont (29)

Needing to find a way to put a string of wins together, the Royals offense exploded for an eight run third inning against Mariners starting pitcher Chris Flexen.

Brady Singer would complete six innings, allowing three runs. The Royals bullpen would prove to be leaky, giving up three runs over the final innings, but the Royals would hold on for a 9-6 win.

              Game two:
              WP: Y. Kikuchi (7-5)
              LP: D. Duffy (6-7)

An absolute disaster if a first inning by Duffy had the Royals down 4-0. In the other dugout, they were losing Yusei Kikuchi’s performance, as he no hit the Royals into the seventh inning, when a Nicky Lopez single broke it up.

The game was never competitive, and the Royals drop it 6-1.

              Game three:
              WP: M. Gonzalez (8-7)
              LP: B. Keller (10-10)

The Royals free fall continues as the lose another game, this time 1-0. Keller was outstanding, but Marcos Gonzales was better, tossing a complete game, four hit shut out.

              Game four:
              WP: R. Montero (3-2)
              LP: J. Merriweather (4-5)

Whit Merrifield led the game off with a solo HR. Neither team would score again until the fifth, when Dylan Moore would double in the Mariners first run to tie it.

In the top of the seventh, Salvy would hit a two out solo HR to give the Royals another one run lead. Merrifield would single in an insurance run to extend the lead to 3-1.

Josh Staumont would go into the ninth, and unravel. He gave up a sac fly to give up a run, and then a two out single by Evan White would tie the game at three. He would recover to strike out Kyle Lewis, but the game would have to go to extras.

After the Royals were unable to score in the top of the tenth, the Mariners would advance the auto runner to third on a sac fly. After the Royals intentionally walk Mitch Hanniger, Julian Merriweather would get art France to ground sharply to second. It was hit too sharply though and Merrifield was unable to field it and the Mariners walk off the Royals to win the series.

The Royals are now 69-62, and a full 5 games back in the division. They’ve also lost the second WC spot and now trail the Angels by a game. With just 31 games remaining, they have to find away to turn around the funk they’ve been in as of late.

I'm 91-32 with The Padres.....91-32!!! And I'm tied for first because The Dodgers also won't lose. 3rd place is AZ at 35 games back. The 3rd most wins in baseball is 68. Just wild i don't have a divisional lead.

Adam Frazier just hit for the cycle last game in a 10-8 win over The Rockies to complete the 3 game sweep.

30 Days Until the Trade Deadline - Cardinals Needs

We have officially hit July, which means the trade deadline is 30 days away. Teams will be pouring over their roster, their needs, and the trade landscape over the next few weeks as they look to either improve their chances to compete this year or build to compete in the future.

For the Cardinals, they are in it this year. Tied with the Brewers for 1st place in the NL Central with the Cubs within striking distance (5 1/2 games) it appears to be a 3 team race to the finish line.

So where do the Cardinals go? What do they need, aside from staying healthy which has been a challenge in itself, to secure their spot in the postseason and make a run at World Series title #12?

Honestly, there isn't much. This team is good. So good that when healthy, and earlier this year, the Cardinals looked as though they may run away with the division. but the law of averages caught up, and the injury bug struck.

So here's a quick rundown of the Cardinals needs, or potential needs, to secure a spot at the table in October:

DEPTH: If one thing has been proven with the injuries the Cardinals have suffered this year, they lack major league ready depth. No doubt the Cards have talent in their farm system, but that talent doesn't appear to be ready for the big stage, aside from maybe LHP Levi Prater. Other than that, the Cards need help, even on their own bench at the moment.

Signing Matt Carpenter was a start and has been a great signing thus far. In 4 games, Carpenter is 5 for 11 at the plate with 2 doubles, a homerun, and 6 RBI's. He's filling in nicely for the injured Nolan Arenado at the moment. Marwin Gonzalez was brought in this offseason when Carpenter mulled retirement. Gonzalez has been a letdown thus far hitting just .175 with 1 homerun and 8 RBI's despite being the number one reserve to give guys days off. His glovework has been suspect as well, committing 5 errors in his limited play. The Cards hope he can turn it around, but their patience is wearing thin.

Andrew Knizner is the backup catcher and is serviceable, but there have been rumblings the Cards may look outside the organization for a battery mate with Molina. Knizner no doubt has the ability to be a good player at the big league level, but he may need more consistent play at Memphis versus what he's getting in St.Louis as Molina continues to put on the gear day in and day out. The Cards have been linked to Victor Caratini of the Padres.

The outfield is a bit more settled with Lane Thomas, Connor Capel, and Justin Williams doing an admirable job in reserve roles, especially with Starling Marte on the IL for another few weeks. Thomas and Capel have been sharing time in center (Capel better hitter/Thomas better defender), so its worked out. Justin Williams, up until Carpenter's signing, was the go to left handed hitter in pinch hit situations and defensive replacement. Still, if there is a high caliber trade candidate for the outfield, don't be surprised if the Cards don't look just to add a layer of depth.

PITCHING: It goes without saying, you cannot have enough pitching, and the Cards are no exception. With Carlos Martinez struggling both with production and staying healthy, the Cards could use another starter. Scherzer has had his share of ailments as well. Adding another starter and then moving Martinez to the bullpen is likely the best bet. While Levi Prater has been good, the Cards would prefer experience at this point rather than leaning on a rookie when stakes get higher. Jack Flaherty is the ace and Kwang Hyun Kim and Dakota Hudson have been great thus far.

In the bullpen, things are getting shaky. Hansel Robles, Tyler Webb, and Jordan Hicks aren't as consistent as you need to compete for a World Series or even divisional crown. Adding Martinez would help the bullpen, but there is a good chance the Cards shop outside their own organization for help and move one of those 3, or more, to Memphis. Likely it would be Hicks as they did a similar move last year that paid off, for a short time at least. There are no known targets thus far for the Cardinals.

That's it. That is what the Cards are looking to improve to better their chances at earning a spot in meaningful October baseball.

Been a while since I posted here. Not sure how CB does it......still only in late May in my Yankees franchise . Well, the trade deadline hype got me and I decided to just have a little more fun over realism this once and I did the Gallo and Rizzo trades now. Reenergizing in game and as a fan watching the team irl. Two more lefty’s and being able to DH Judge and still have an elite RF is fun more then I thought.

Almost feels wrong since he hasn’t actually played there in years IRL and it’s probably more of his ‘emergency position’ by now but.....sliding Gallo into 3B sometimes and having an insane 3B for the game is nice. Not my fault SDS leaves it as a backup position .

                        Late May Update:

After a rough stretch since early April, since May 11th the Yankees have surged back above .500 and have tied the 25-21 Orioles for 1st place, taking 2 out of 3 from Tampa and Baltimore, with a 4 game road sweep of the Rangers. Currently we are up 2-0 in a 3 game set with the 21-24 White Sox.

                        News:

Kluber Set To Return From IL
Back on May 7th Kluber would leave in the 3rd after taking a comebacker that left him with a black eye, and was promptly placed on the 15 Day IL. Some fans have questioned the legitimacy of this, as he’s conveniently also by far our worst starter with a 6.61 ERA. Nick Nelson would start a few games in his place, but now he’s back. The Yankees hope these 15 days have allowed ‘Klubot’ to reboot. Another poor outing may send him to the bullpen.

                        Deivi Garcia Breakout
Top prospect Deivi Garcia is becoming everything the Yankees hoped this year at the MLB level, pitching to a 2.66 ERA in 44IP.

                        Lights Out Lefty Justin Wilson
Wilson is off to a dominant start back in pinstripes, with an elite 1.76 ERA through 15.1 IP.

Gio Urshela 1-2 Weeks Away From Return
Urshela was placed on the IL back on April 20th with a broken ankle.

Yankees Acquire An Ice Cold Tim Locastro, DFA Encanarcion, Release Dee Gordan.

                        Next up:
Yankees go for the sweep in the Bronx in game 3 vs the White Sox before an off day where we await the 16-30 Blue Jays. We’ll have our work cut out for us, sending a struggling Kluber to the mound vs White Sox #1 starter Lucas Giolito.

                          DRAMATIC FINISHES, SEASON DEFINING INJURY
Royals activate Alaberto Mondesi from the IL and option Lucius Fox to double-a NW Arkansas.

                          Game one:
                          WP: J. Merryweather (5-5)
                          LP: C. Quantrill (0-4)

Carlos Santana hit a solo HR in the bottom of the fourth against Aaron Civale to put the Royals up 1-0, but Mike Minor gave it away when Oscar Mercado hit a two run HR in the sixth (Mike Minor’s first hit allowed on the day).

Following a lengthy rain delay before the bottom of the eight, Soler reached via error to lead off the inning. He was lifted for pinch runner Jarrod Dyson, who advanced to second on a wild pitch. Dyson would steal third with one out, and Joc Pederson at the plate. The next two Royals hitters however would ground out, too sharply to score the run.

In the top of the 9th, Josh Staumont would give up a run and the Royals would trail 3-1 headed bottom nine.

With one out, Seuly Matias would single and Merrifield would follow with a double. The tying runs were in position for Mondesi.

Alaberto Mondesi would work the count full against Karinchak, and then triple in the left center gap to tie the game. Looking for the go ahead run, Salvy would strikeout and Viloria would fly out, sending the game to extras.

Daniel Lynch came in for the Royals to face Darnell Sweeney. Sweeney came through with a sharply hit ground ball into right field, but the auto runner Brian Lavastida ran through a stop sign and was easily thrown out at home by Joc Pederson. Salvy then threw out Sweeney trying to steal second, and got Harold Ramirez to ground out. Royals just need a run.

They would not get that run however, as they were retired in order.

The Indians would score one in the top of the 11th in an Ahmed Rosario double, but Julian Merryweather would keep it a one run game.

After twice failing to get a bunt down, Hunter Dozier would rip a single to put runners at the corners for Seuly Matias. He would foul out but to deep enough RF to drive in the tying run.

Merrifield would then double, putting runners at second and third with one out for Mondesi.

Mondesi would pop up to the third baseman, so it would be up to Kyle Isbel, who laced a fastball into RF for the walkoff single.

                          Game two:
                          WP: T. McKenzie (9-8)
                          LP: B. Singer (9-9)

As the calendar turns to September, the Royals have recalled SP Jackson Kowar and SS Lucius Fox to the MLB roster.

In the bottom of the third, with the Royals down 3-0, Meibrys Viloria tied the game on a three run HR against Indians SP Tristan McKenzie.

In the next half inning however, it was a Grand Slam off the bat of Owen Miller to give the Indians the lead. Both teams would add runs, but it was Cleveland coasting to an 11-6 win.

                          Game three:
                          WP: E. Clase (4-4)
                          LP: J. Merryweather (5-6)

Whit Merrifield would have to leave the game after third inning after getting hurt on a ball that he dove for on the infield.

Down 7-2 after seven, the Royals got 3 in the eighth, and two in the ninth to send it to extras.

In the top of the 11th, the Indians scratched a couple runs to take a 9-7 lead, but Kyle Isbel came through with more late inning heroics for the Royals, by blasting a two run HR to tie it for his first career HR.

The Indians did in the 12 what they did in the 11th, and scored two runs to take an 11-9 lead.

In the bottom of the 12, Nicky Lopez led off with a single to put runners are the corners. Mondesi then worked a walk to load the bases with no outs. Michael Taylor would hit a sac fly to drive in a run, but Dozier and Matias would be retired and the Royals fall.

*Whit Merrifield has a broken shin and will go on the 60 day IL, ending his season. The Royals already have a slew of players they were counting on that are out now, and this one couldn’t have come at a worst time. The Royals are now 2 back of the WC.

May 1st 2022. Detroit has traded Gerardo Parra to division rivals Chicago White Sox for reliever Evan Marshall. It helps alleviate the logjam of outfielders and improves Detroit's bullpen. Chicago meanwhile helps the outfield and relieves some of the plethora of arms in the pen. These two teams haven't made a trade in division since 2013. A 3 team deal that saw Jake Peavy leave the South side and bring in Avisail Garcia.
Detroit than called up Daz Cameron from AAA Toledo. He is a 2nd generation talent, son of Mike Cameron. He is expected to move from RF to a more natural Center position. In 31 games combined from 2020 and 2021 he averaged .205 with 20 hits and 27 K's, so one can only assume this might be his last chance. Especially with Riley Greene moving up the depth chart.

ROYALS CLUTCH UP AT HOME AGAINST FIRST PLACE WHITE SOX
                                Game one:
                                WP: G. Holland (4-4)
                                LP: L. Hendriks (2-4)

Salvador Perez put the Royals up 2-0 with a towering homer in against Lucas Giolito to start the biggest series of the year.

The White Sox would respond with a three run inning against Brad Keller in the second.

The White Sox would hang in to that 3-2 lead all the way until the ninth, but Meibrys Viloria would pinch hit, and score on a Kyle Isbel double to tie the game against Liam Hendriks.
Isbel would advance to third on a Mondesi infield single. Nicky Lopez would drop a bloop single over the shortstop’s head and the Royals walk off the White Sox.

                                Game two:
                                WP: K. Bubic (9-8)
                                LP: L. Lynn (14-7)

The Royals used an eight run fifth inning to jump up 9-1 in on the White Sox en route to a 9-5 victory. Kris Bubic was fantastic until he allowed a three run HR to Jose Abreu in the eighth.

                                Game three:
                                WP: J. Staumont (5-4)
                                LP: L. Hendriks (2-5)

Mike Minor gave up a first inning run, but the Royals answered when Nicky Lopez crushed a pitch for his first HR of the year to tie it in the bottom of the first.

The Royals were down 4-2 in the bottom of the eight, but would load the bases with two outs for pinch hitter Salvador Perez. Salvy would hit a deep fly ball, but Kauffman would contain it for the third out.

With one out in the ninth, Nicky Lopez shocked the crowd by going yard for the second time to pull the Royals within one.

With two outs in the inning Jorge Soler would single, bringing up Hunter Dozier. On a first pitch breaking ball, Dozier would drive it deep to left field, and the fans went into a frenzy as it banged off the foul pole for a walk off homer.

The Royals complete the three game sweep to move to within 2.5 games of the White Sox. The Royals have also moved to within a game of the WC behind both the Blue Jays and the Angels.

The record is 73-64 and will be headed to Baltimore for four games and Minnesota for three.
