Cardinals got into All Star Break with 47-44 record

The Cardinals have finished the first half of the season with a 47-44 record and trail the Reds by 4.5 games in the NL Central Division.

The Cardinals have lost 3 straight heading into the All-Star Break as they continue to play inconsistent baseball.

Whether its the bats that are cold, the starting pitching is off, or the bullpen is blowing up, the Cardinals continue to just find ways to lose ballgames.

They will receive a jolt to the offense as Nolan Arenado is expected to return Friday for the 2nd half opener against the Cubs. There is also the possibility the Cardinals will look to make more moves before the trade deadline to see if they can't find the right combination to get more consistent and hopefully lead to more wins.

      2022 Baltimore Orioles 06/06-06/09

      Orioles-3
      Rangers-5

      Baltimore drops series to Rangers

Baltimore lost three out of the four games against the Texas Rangers in Arlington. The theme of the series was solid pitching early for Baltimore and sketchy pitching in the later innings which contributed to the series loss.

In the first game, D.L. Hall had a perfect game going into the sixth inning. In that sixth inning, he gave up three hits, two walks and three runs. Those three runs were all the Rangers needed while Baltimore managed just a single run on the night.

The second game saw a homerun explosion from the Orioles in the 9-2 victory.

Games three and four saw the Rangers score two runs in the 8th (game 3) and two in the 9th (game 4 walk off) to take the series victory. The wall off was Isiah Kiner-Falefa's first homerun on the season.

The Orioles remain on the road for a divisional matchup with the Boston Red Sox (29-28)

American League defeats National League 6-0 in All-Star Game

The American League continued its dominance over the National League winning the 2023 All-Star Game 6-0 at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati.

Yordan Alvarez of the Astros got things started with a solo homerun in the Top of the 1st off of Trevor Bauer. Gleybar Torres would add a two run shot in the 3rd off of Kyle Hendricks, and Sean Murphy would hit a solo shot later in the inning off of Hendricks as well.

The AL wasn't done as in the 7th Yoan Moncada would hit a two run bomb off of Josh Hader to make it 6-0 the final score.

The NL had their chances drawing 6 walks against the AL pitching staff but hit into a whopping 5 double plays in the game.

The bright spot for the NL was Luis Castillo pitching in the 2nd inning in front of the home fans and striking out the side on just 10 pitches.

Tommy Edman lone Cardinal representative at mid-summer classic

27 year old Tommy Edman was the lone representative for the Cardinals at the All-Star Game. Edman was hitting .299 with 6 homeruns and 36 RBI's and leads the majors in triples with 7.

It was extremely surprising and a shock that Paul Goldschmidt was left off the roster. Goldschmidt was in the Top 10 in batting average for the NL, 8th in hits, and 7th in doubles. I guess since he's only hit 10 homeruns, the powers at be felt that his 1st half performance wasn't worthy of a roster spot.

Cubs acquire Vladimir Guerrero Jr from Blue Jays

The Cubs and Blue Jays struck what is the biggest deal of the trade frenzy as the Cubs acquire Vladimir Guerrero Jr from the Blue Jays.

          Cubs get:

          3B Vladimir Guerrero Jr

          Blue Jays get:

          IF David Bote
RHP Wade Smith (2021 1st Round Pick - #18 Rank Prospect in baseball)

The Cubs get a superstar caliber player in Vladimir Guerrero Jr who is in the final year of his contract and will be commanding big money in the free agent market. Guerrero struggled each of the past two seasons, but has bounced back this year hitting .282 with 15 homeruns and 58 RBI's. He was an all-star this year. Will be curious to see if the Cubs retain Vlad Jr this offseason as the Cubs are on the fringe of playoff hunt this year.

The Blue Jays probably shocked everyone trading Vlad Jr, but the return they get is a good one. David Bote is 30 years old and under contract for the next two seasons. He is hitting .292 with 8 homeruns and 31 RBI's this year as he was limited in play with the Cubs as a more platoon role. With the Jays, its expected he will be the everyday 3rd baseman.

The other acquisition, Wade Smith is just 20 years old and ranked as the #18 overall prospect in baseball. He was a 1st round pick by the Cubs in 2021 and appears to be on the way to being on the premier closers in baseball. An all-star at the AAA level last year at just 19 years old, he was an all-star again this year as he has successfully save 21 games this year in 21 tries with an ERA of 0.31 and a WHIP just under 0.90. He has electric stuff and in 23 innings this year has 41 strikeouts.

Can't wait to see what else the trade deadline brings.

Re: MLB The Show 21 Franchise Discussion Thread

We're down to the final week of the 2021 season.

My Braves had an outside chance of catching the 2001 Mariners for most regular-season wins in MLB history. But we inexplicably lost three of four to the lowly Diamondbacks to end that thought. With six games to go, the most we can win is 114.

The Dodgers have won 12 straight, which has us a little bit nervous about a potential NLCS matchup. But we'll worry about that if and when we get there.

Not a lot of excitement in the playoff chase for the final week.

            National League
The Braves and Dodgers are locked in to the top two seeds, with the Braves having home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Brewers are close to clinching the Central.

The Padres and Mets are tied for the top wild-card spot. The Reds have faint hope at 3.5 games back. But the Padres do have a three-game series with the red-hot Dodgers and the Mets end the season with three against the Braves, so there is hope.

            American League
The Yankees and Astros have won their divisions and are battling for home-field advantage now. The White Sox hold a 1.5 game lead over the Twins in the Central, but both teams have clinched a playoff spot.

The last wild-card spot is down to the Red Sox and Indians with Boston holding a 2-game lead.

Cardinals acquire Matthew Boyd from Tigers for Brandon Nimmo and prospects

The Cardinals and Tigers have struck a deal that will send LHP Matthew Boyd from Detroit to St.Louis.

              Cardinals get:

              LHP Matthew Boyd

              Tigers get:

              OF Brandon Nimmo
              RHP Lewis Fisher
              RHP Seth Elledge

The Cardinals were seeking some stability in their pitching staff and preferably a left hander. Matthew Boyd was a target along with James Paxton of the Mariners, but Boyd was the cheaper of the two in terms of return investment.

Boyd is having a good season for a struggling Tigers team as he is 9-5 this year with a 3.13 ERA and was an all-star this year. Boyd who is in the final year of his contract will join the Cards rotation and will replace Charlie Morton who has struggled since the first full month of the season.

The Tigers are getting a solid return for Boyd. First is Brandon Nimmo, who the Cardinals signed back in May and has been swinging a good bat and a solid addition to a lineup that has been inconsistent. Nimmo is hitting .261 with 6 homeruns and 29 RBI's this year for the Cardinals. The Tigers reached out earlier this month inquiring about Nimmo, but the two sides couldn't agree on a deal.

Along with Nimmo, the Tigers are getting a pair of young pitchers.

Lewis Fisher is an 18 year RHP whom the Cardinals drafted last year in the 3rd round of the draft. He's been in Single A this year, but has tremendous upside with good stuff. He has the potential to be a front end starter in a rotation.

Seth Elledge is 25 years old and was demoted to Memphis about 3 weeks ago as he was struggling at the major league level. Elledge has good stuff to be a bridge to the closer or even possibly a closer in the near future. Elledge was 1-2 with a 4.35 ERA with St.Louis, but was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 13 innings in Memphis where he's recorded 19 strikeouts against just one walk and 2 hits.

The Cardinals may not be done as the deadline approaches as they have other holes/concerns on this roster they may seek to address.

Cardinals designate Charlie Morton for assignment

The Cardinals have designated RHP Charlie Morton for assignment.

The 39 year old started off pitching extremely well, but over the last 5 starts Morton has struggled. His ERA has ballooned from mid 3's to nearly 5.

There really is no trade market for Morton so the question will be if he's claimed in waivers and whether those waivers will be release or outright assignment.

CB, you're a couple of years ahead of me, did Morton not fall off after the first year for you? He's already down to a 72 in my franchise. I kind of want to re-sign him when I get to the offseason, but with the way his attributes are dropping I'll probably let him walk.

No he was pretty good in '22 as pitched for the Braves and had a decent stat line. I honestly don't know what his starting rating was in '21 vs '22 but I do know that I signed him as a 70 overall and he was pitching well, but has struggled of late. That's not to say he couldn't bounce back, but at the moment I'm not confident in him given his last few starts.

In year on I am pitching well with him. K per 9 is over 8. I am playing on All-Star level, using the pitching meter mechanism. I have to look at his ratings. I have 10 starts using him at the moment.

With one start to go, I think he's 15-5 with a 2.44 ERA for me. That's good, but he had a sub 2 ERA and was in the CY Young discussion for most of the first half. He's definitely been hit harder since the break. I think his rating was around 80 at the start of the season, it's down to 72 now.

I'm weird in that I'll sign or trade for guys if I like their motions/stances. I like Morton's, so I'd like to bring him back. But Newk is a 77, Touki is a 72 and Ynoa is a 71 for the guys battling for the 4/5 spots in the rotation next season.

Cardinals place Nolan Gorman on 10 Day IL

The Cardinals have placed 3B Nolan Gorman on the 10 Day IL due to a sprained MCL. He's expected to miss roughly 3 weeks with the injury.

Gorman was brought up from Double A Springfield as the Cards scrambled during Nolan Arenado's absence to find an everyday, or combination of players, to man the hot corner until Arenado returned. They tried Edmundo Sosa, Nick Dunn (traded to BAL for Kirby Yates), Yairo Munoz, and then Nolan Gorman. Despite only being at the Double A level, Gorman made an impact with his bat in St.Louis though his defense left a bit to be desired.

Gorman was hitting .258 with 4 homeruns and 19 RBI's when he was placed on the IL.

With Nolan Arenado being activated from the IL, no move was needed as the Cardinals just kept Edmundo Sosa on the active roster instead of optioning him down to Memphis as previously planned.

Ever since the game came out this year and sounds of the show was taken out, carry over franchise was taken out, funding your franchise through the use of stubs was removed, it hasn't been a very good year for me as a baseball gamer.

I have trying starting franchise after franchise after franchise, but no luck. i had ONE that i liked but that was during the whole cloud save problem. Where you couldn't have accessed your franchise without a system save.

I finally gave it one last try before just saying wait until 22 comes out.

So, I did my usual fantasy draft how i always do it. Went in and looked at my budget and went "well this isnt going to work!" Then decided to go on a flurry of trades after my first game of the season.

I took the team payroll from (-$104M) To a positive $151.26M)

Here is how i did it, i traded all players awasyc that were making in excess of $0M per year on their contracts.

                            Here are those trades:

Acquired Sonny Gray from the Giants for SP Zach Greinke

Acquired Patrick Corbin from the Brewers for SP Justin Verlander

Acquired CF Byron Buxton from the Cubs for CF Mike Trout

Acquired SP Michael Fulmer from the Dodgers for SP Sonny Gray

Acquired SP Zach Eflin from the Padres for SP Kevin Gausman

Acquired SP Eduardo Rodriguez from the Diamondbacks for SP Patrick Corbin

Acquired RF Max Kepler from the Philles for RF Charlie Blackmon

Acquired LF Eddie Rosario from the Marlins for LF Michael Brantley

Acquired LF Yoenis Cespedes from the Philles for LF Justin Upton

Acquired SS Bryson Stott from the Reds for SS Jean Segura

Acquired 3B Carter Kieboom from the White Sox for 3B Justin Turner

Acquired C Mitch Garver from the Pirates for C Buster Posey

Acquired 1B Ryan McMahon from the Brewers for 1B Joey Votto

Acquired SP Taijuan Wlaker from the Braves for SP David Price

So yes, MANY of you are going to be taking this post and shoving down SDS throat as in way too many unrealistic trades but i did what i did and i got what i got.

this was on all default trade and budget settings as well.

I have to say that with this group of players plus the ones that i didn't have to trade away. i love this team.

So I am desperately praying to the gods of all of baseball that SDS reinstates the carry over franchise and that i will not have to start over once 22 drops!!!

Down to the final weekend. We're scuffling a bit. Phillies took the first two from us, but we managed to take the final game to avoid the sweep. But we've still lost six of our last 10.

We called Kyle Wright up to start Friday against the Mets. It will be his first MLB action of the season. Soroka and Fried will get their normal starts to close out the season, but we'll probably limit them to five innings each.

Braves, Dodgers and Brewers have clinched their divisions. Padres and Mets are the wild cards. Only thing to be determined is who hosts the wild-card game.

Yankees and Astros have clinched division titles in the AL. The White Sox have a three-game lead over the Twins in the Central, and they've passed the Astros for the second seed. Red Sox hold a one-game lead over the Indians for the final wild-card spot.

Is there a way to bring Acuña into the lineup?
