Re: The whiff...
Because I’ve played The Show and baseball video games for probably 30 years and I’ve never once struck out 18, 16, and 15 times in a game. Ever. So obviously something is different.

Re: The whiff...
I hit on Hall of Fame, with the Tigers, in Broadcast cam. I did bump up the timing slider to 7. I am striking out anywhere from 8-12 times a game, which isn't unrealistic with the Tigers at all. Directional hitting btw.
You REALLY have to be disciplined in this game, as opposed to years past. Not gonna square up, or even make contact with many pitches out of the zone. Also can't be afraid to let borderline strikes go......Comment

Re: The whiff...
I struck out 18 times in my Franchise opener and 10 times in game two. I hit on HOF/Directional/ Buttons. With pitch speed between 7-8 I believe. I can tell you that about 4-5 of those Ks in each game have been on check swing attempts. I had become so reliant upon being able to check my swing in years before. I can tell it is going to be an adjustment for me.

Re: The whiff...
I just hopped into my first game on default HOF. Struck out 10x but wasn't mad about it.
The timing window is a bit smaller this year and check swings are harder to make, both of which are good things in my view.
I usually think The Show takes 2 weeks to get used to the new changes, so I'm guessing the timing stuff will click in with added reps.
I hope they don't overreact to folks taking some early lumps, personally, myself included.Comment

Re: The whiff...
Just looking on Reddit right now, after scrolling through 100's of posts, I've seen only 3 or 4 posts about hitting being too difficult and none of them are gaining any traction. Then the comments are mainly "It's too early to be complaining about this" and "You'll adjust to it eventually" types of responses. Other than that, the vast majority of players have no issues w/ the slight difficulty in hitting this year.
I mean, I'm still struggling myself and I've had the game since Thursday. But I'm getting better because 1. I've lowered the difficulty from HoF to All-Star until I start adjusting to the changes, 2. I've switched to a new camera for the time being which has probably helped the most, and 3. I'm not afraid to make full use of custom practice if I need to.
Which brings me to my next point... and this isn't directed towards anybody here but just a general observation over the years...
I really don't understand why it's so hard for a lot of people to bump the difficulty down a notch or try a different camera view or change a few options around, etc. if they struggle w/ something right out of the gate. Especially in regards to difficulty.
The vast majority of people always want to jump right into a new iteration on HoF or Legend and then when they struggle to start out b/c of any slight changes made by the devs to gameplay -- whether good changes or bad -- they immediately cry foul about something being wrong with the game itself that needs to be fixed.
It's like they have it ingrained in their head that playing on anything lower than HoF or Legend is a n00bs game and will only make them a lesser player. The same way people have tried for years to make it seem like your not a "real" gamer if you use Directional over Zone when in reality, Zone can actually be easier than Directional in some ways.Last edited by bigd51; 04-20-2021, 09:36 PM.Comment

I think people are overreacting in regards to the hitting troubles, TBH. Like you said, it just takes some adjusting to the changes before you start to get the hang of it.

As for changing cameras, I refuse to change cameras, because I enjoy playing the game like I'm watching it on TV. I hit, pitch, and field from broadcast view. Never use anything else. SO, for me, changing cameras is out of the question. But, I agree, if some people struggle, there is no harm in switching things up.
Same with difficulty level. I play as the Tigers, so I want a challenge. So, I'm reluctant to lower the difficulty too much. In "20" I hit and pitched on LEGEND difficulty. However, I would normally start on All Star, and work my way up. This year, I decided to start at Hall of Fame, and work up to Legend.
8 games into my franchise, I have now moved the pitching difficulty up to Legend, but am still hitting on Hall of Fame.
But, there is no harm, nothing to be ashamed of in lowering the difficulty level while getting acclimated to the game.
One thing you CANNOT do in this year's game, is be a "free swinger" You are going to strike out a ton with that approach. You really need to work the count, and look for your pitch. Don't be afraid to lay off of borderline strikes, and pitches you cannot do much with.Comment

Re: The whiff...
My timing has adjusted and I'm getting back to similar results I had at the end of 20. Gonna keep it on dynamic this year I think with the slider at 1

Re: The whiff...
This is from someone on a Facebook group regarding the strikeouts. Say whatever you like regarding it but I’d bet money that the timing and check swings gets adjusted in an update. I have no doubt about it whatsoever.
It’s exactly as I said in the original post, if the Diamond Dynasty crowd cries about it there will be changes. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to see it addressed in the first patch.
Changelog will be something to the effect of, “adjusted the ratio of swings/check swings,” and, “slightly increased the timing window when hitting.”
Like I’ve said, I’ve played thousands of games of The Show for well over 10 years. And I’ve played practically every other baseball game before that. It does not take me playing a ton of games to figure out what’s changed.
As far as dropping down to All-Star, sure that’s an option but I run into the thing I hate the most about doing that. And that is constantly having to adjust the game to meet my skill level. I’ll go back to playing MLB 20 before I’ll make a difficulty change in 21. Maybe I’m stubborn but until this year I could play on Hall of Fame and get very realistic numbers. This year (both pitching and hitting) strikeouts are way up, which I would agree they’re up in real life as well. However, the degree to which they’re up in MLB 21 is disproportionate to what it should be.

The Diamond Dynasty crowd doesn't seem to be crying about it at all right now. If it were such a huge issue, then you would see every forum littered w/ those complaints.
Hardly any people are complaining about striking out too much or check swings being more difficult. Why? Because check-swinging was way too lenient and hardly ever resulted in a strike being called, so it was a big ask from the community last year for SDS to make check swinging harder. They did and the vast majority of people are happy w/ it.

A lot of people realized from the jump that hitting was a tad more difficult, but the vast majority of people have adjusted or are starting to adjust to it... either by changing around a few options or simply giving it time to adjust to the new mechanics.
You admit you have no intention of changing any of the plethora of options that are there and you even admitted that you are swinging at too many pitches outside of the strike zone, yet you still feel the onus is on SDS the tune the game?Comment

The whiff...
Just scrolled through the first 10 or 11 pages on the official MLB The Show forums and only 1 post complaining about check swings being more difficult. So like I said, those types of posts are very few and far between.

And that's a YOU problem. The options are there for you to adjust the game if you are having problems hitting... as everyone else has no problem doing so. Just because it doesn't play exactly as it always has on the same difficulty w/ the same settings for you, it does not mean the game itself needs to be adjusted. You can't expect any real, meaningful change to the game if you always expect it to play the exact same way out of the box every year.

It’s all good. I’ll be sure to come back and say I told you so when they make the update.
