    2023 Washington Nationals

Atlanta Braves (10-9) at Washington Nationals (14-6)

Game 1: Mike Soroka (2-1, 1.59 ERA) vs Stephen Strasburg (3-0, 0.78 ERA) The Braves would put the first run on the board in the third when Ronald Acuña Jr. drew a walk, stole a base and scored on a Dansby Swanson single. Acuña would then lead off the seventh with a solo home run. Stephen Strasburg would give two base hits before striking out Ozzie Albies, who would be the last batter he faced. Kyle Finnegan would come out of the bullpen and give up a double to Marcell Ozuna followed by a three run home run to Ronald Acuña Jr to put the Braves up 6-0. Stephen Strasburg's final line read as follows: 6.2 innings pitched, six hits, 4 runs, a walk and 10 strikeouts. Matt Olson would add another run in the ninth with a solo home run. Mike Soroka was locked in, going 8.1 shutout innings with a walk and eight strikeouts.

Game 2: Aaron Nola (1-3, 4.50) vs Mackenzie Gore (3-1, 4.24) Austin Riley, who has been struggling so far this year, hit a solo home run in the first to put the Braves up. He singled in another run in the third. Aaron Nola would cruise through the first four innings but have to leave in the top of the fifth with an injury to his hand*. Zach Eflin would be called upon to pitch in relief for Nola. He would walk Anderson Tejeda and give up a base hit to Lane Thomas before Keibert Ruiz singled in Tejeda to put the Nationals on the board. Eflin would then be able to get out of the inning with limited damage. The Braves would get their third run when Lane Thomas could not make a play in left, allowing Marcell Ozuna to score from second with two down in the seventh. That would be the end of the day for Mackenzie Gore, who went 6.2 innings, gave up 3 runs on 7 hits with a walk and 4 Ks. Victor Arano would come in and give up a run in the eighth after Travis d’Arnaud doubled and Dansby Swanson singled to score him. Ozzie Albies would then single, allowing Swanson to score from second and put the Braves up 5-1 late. The Nationals were just never able to get anything going, even when they worked the count and had runners on. Atlanta tacked on their sixth run in the ninth on a Robert Acuna Jr. sac fly. Raisel Iglesias would come on to pitch the ninth, but leave after two pitches with tightness in his neck**. Kenley Jansen would finish the game without much difficulty.

*Aaron Nola has a bruise to his hand and will be out for a few games
    **No significant injury for Iglesias

    Game 3: Spencer Strider (2-2, 4.91) vs Josiah Gray (2-1, 2.84)
Atlanta flexed their muscles early again, scoring the first run when Austin Riley singled to score Dansby Swanson from second. They added two more in the third when Michael Harris tripled to score Acuna, and Riley hit a sac fly to score Harris. The Braves tacked on a fourth run in the fourth when Marcell Ozuna hit an RBI single. Washington would finally threaten in the bottom half, but could not score. Josiah Gray would leave in the sixth with a line score of 5.0IP, 8H, 4R, 1BB, and 4K. The Nationals would finally get on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Luis Garcia singled and Yadiel Hernandez followed with a 2 run HR to knock Spencer Strider out of the game. Strider, as he was in 2022, was dominant against the Nats despite only getting 1K. But his pitch count was high and his pitches finally flattened out enough for Washington to do damage. Jameson Taillon would enter from the ‘pen and shut the Nationals rally down. Washington would again threaten in the seventh, even loading the bases with two down, but Tyler Matzek would come in and strike out Luis Garcia to kill another rally. Meanwhile, Patrick Corbin would pitch two shutout innings before giving up a 2 run home run to Matt Olson in the bottom of the eighth, which would be the dagger for this game. The Braves would go on to win 6-2 and sweep the series.

It was a tough series for the Nationals, who now moved to 14-9 on the year. The Braves came into the season rated as the best team in baseball, and are getting hot after a slow start. Washington will get an off day and stay home to play the Cardinals (13-9) for three games.

2023 Standings have been posted to my spreadsheet (up to the completion of this past series) and team stats have been updated as well.

      June 13-14: YUMA (29-40) @ FLAGSTAFF (49-19)
      Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 9,577)

      June 13: Hops 16, Dust Devils 4
      June 14: Hops 6, Dust Devils 5

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The beat goes on for the best team in the IBL as they completed a two-game sweep over the struggling Yuma Dust Devils at AutoZone Park.

In the opener, the Hops knocked out 22 hits in a 16-4 bludgeoning of the Dust Devils. Ryan Pressley carried a perfect game into the seventh inning as he picked up his eighth win on the season.

This one was over quickly as Pressley brought his “A” game and the offense had a night. Donnie Roland had RBI doubles in the second on third innings as the Hops jumped out to a 5-0 lead. David Benitez would ice this one with a three-run home run in the fifth to put the Hops up 9-0.

The biggest takeaway from this game was an arm injury to superstar Art Mason in the fifth. He was injured diving back to first on a pickoff attempt. He was placed on the ten-day injured list after the game with an injured wrist and recalled shortstop Isaac Nettles from Triple-A. His replacement, newly acquired Jacob Anderson went 2 for 2 with a solo home run and three stolen bases. The Hops would steal six bases early in this game.

Suddenly red-hot Roberto Geronimo homered again, his ninth on the year, in the seventh.

Yuma’s Victor Resendez would break up the perfect game with one out in the seventh as he blasted a solo home run to right, his eighth on the season. The Dust Devils would add two more home runs off of Pressley, but he did go the distance, allowing four runs on just four hits, while striking out five.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Hops had to hold on late to secure a 6-5 victory despite hitting four home runs in the ball game. Josh Ortega’s clutch two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth put the Hops up by two and they were able to hold on to win their fourth straight game.

Juro Yamaguchi (6-3) picked up the win in the finale, but it was a struggle as he allowed two run son four hits in six innings, while striking out five and walking four.

Vic Miller picked up his league leading 23rd save, but served up a two-run home run to Jimmy James in the ninth that cut the Hops lead to 6-5.

Roberto Geronimo homered for the third straight game. The solo shot was his 10th on the season.

Flagstaff (49-19) will have Thursday off before hosting Phoenix (32-37) for three games this weekend to close out the home stand.

Around the League: Tucson shortstop Joe Marie homered twice and drove in all five of their runs in a 5-3 victory over Salt River. Glendale’s Clinton Lake hit a walk-off home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth as the Desert Dogs shutout Surprise 1-0. Glendale’s Roger Vargas and Surprise’s Dan Reyna each tossed eight shutout innings in the pitcher’s duel.

West Texas’ Lowell Alan Pressley (6-1) tossed a complete game, six-hit shutout, striking out eight, as the Bison defeated Fort Worth 4-0. Earl Phelps homered and drove in all four runs in the victory. Austin defeated San Antonio 13-12 in a slugfest at Dell Diamond. Rick Singleton went 3 for 4 with a triple, home run and two RBIs to lead the Fire Frogs to the victory. He has been tearing the cover off the ball since returning from an injury in Spring Training that kept him out the first five weeks.

Roswell’s DeSean Gardner (7-3) tossed a complete game one-hitter, striking out ten, as Roswell shutout Colorado Springs 3-0.

Austin won a wild one, 11-9 in 15 innings over San Antonio as Rick Singleton set an IBL record, hitting four home runs and driving in seven in the win, including a walk-off two run shot to end it. Singleton is now hitting .372 with 12 home runs and 38 RBIs in 36 games since returning from injury. He was given seven year, $200M contract by Austin this offseason to lure him away from Chandler. Kosuke Matsui, the ML’s leading home run hitter, also blasted two home runs in the losing effort for the Javelinas. He now has 25 home runs and 70 RBIs.

Every single player in the St George lineup drove in at least one run in a 16-8 victory over Goodyear.

          Team Notes:
-George Springer returned in the last week of June after missing over a month and a half.
-Kevin Gausman should return after the all-star break.
-Danny Jansen was dealt to the White Sox in the deal that brought Garrett Crochet to Toronto.
-In a surprise move, Yusei Kikuchi was claimed off waivers by the Cincinnati Reds. Kikuchi struggled during his time in Toronto, and it was shocking to see the Reds take on the rest of his salary.
-Vladdy Jr. had his best month yet, and is now in the MVP conversation. He hit 9 HR's and picked up 30 RBI during the month.
-Bo Bichette has completely lost his HR stroke, but bounced back in June, raising his batting average from .245 to .265. He's been a doubles machine, so hopefully that holds up.
-Matt Chapman's otherwordly .326 batting average in April didn't hold up, but he's still putting up a respectable line, and hit another 5 homers in June.
-Alek Manoah & Jose Berrios both saw their ERA's jump by about a half run, but both have also cut their BB/9 numbers down drastically.
-Yosver Zulueta made his debut this month, and has put up a respectable first run through the majors. He was expected to get bounced back down to AAA when Hyun Jin Ryu returns (July 1st), but Nate Pearson's rough run could see the team keep Zulueta up instead.
          Around the league:
-The Dodgers continue to dominate the NL. They sit 0.5 games back of the Jays for tops in the Majors.
-The Yankees put up a solid effort this month (including sweeping the Jays), and have put themselves back in the wild card conversation.
-The Mariners have been riding a combination of hot bats and excellent pitching, and currently lead the AL West by 5.5 games. The Angels sit second, and Astros are 3rd.
-Also from the AL West, the Rangers are doing their best to stay in the race. While their 39-42 record isn't great, they also have the best run differential in the division at +50.
-The NL East is setting itself up as an absolute bloodbath, with the difference between the division leading Mets, and 4th place Marlins being only 2.0 games.
-The Cards kept their solid pace up in the Central, and lead Milwaukee by 5.5.
-The Padres and Giants are victims in the West, with both teams sitting well above .500, but also 11 and 16.5 games back of the Dodgers respectively.

Re: MLB The Show 22 Franchise Discussion Thread

              2023 Washington Nationals

The Nationals welcomed the Cardinals (13-9) to Washington for a three game series. St. Louis retains most of their 2022 squad, with the exception of longtime Cardinals Yadier Molina, Albert Pujols (kind of longtime Cardinal?) and Adam Wainwright. They made up for it in a big way by signing Clayton Kershaw to a one year deal. They also signed Cam Gallagher and Omar Narvaez to replace Molina. The Cards should definitely be the favorites to win the NL Central and have a team built to go deep into the postseason.

Game 1: Miles Mikolas (3-1, 3.38) vs Zach Davies (1-2, 5.27) The Cardinals would take the lead in the fourth on a Paul Goldschmidt single, but the Nationals would answer in the fifth when Yadiel Hernandez hit an RBI single of his own. Those would be the only scoring plays until the 10th, when Brendan Donovan doubled to score O’Neill. Yadiel Hernandez would come through once again hitting a first pitch single to score C.J. Abrams, who was brought in to pinch run. The Cardinals would get two runs off of Victor Arano in the 12th when Nolan Gorman and Tyler O’Neill both doubled. The Nationals were inches away from tying it in the bottom half when Lane Thomas flew out to the wall in center, but it was not to be.

Game 2: Jordan Montgomery (1-1, 5.06) vs Cade Cavalli (2-1, 5.06) Both pitchers entered this matchup with identical ERAs, and they matched each other pretty well for the first few innings. The Cardinals would score first on a Nolan Arenado home run; but Cavalli would right the ship and continue for two more innings. He left after five because of a high pitch count, and the Nationals would have to turn to the inconsistent arm of Patrick Corbin. He would strike out his first batter before giving up a single to Dylan Carlson and a home run to Tyler O’Neill. The Nationals were able to rally in the bottom of the sixth when Ildemaro Vargas, Luis Garcia and Brandon Drury would single, putting the Nationals on the board. Garcia would be thrown out at the plate when Joey Meneses singled, but Gleyber Torres came through with a towering three run home run to put Washington on top. That would be all for Jordan Montgomery, as St. Louis would call on Jose Quintana out of the bullpen. Quintana would prevent the Nationals from scoring any insurance runs, but Kyle Finnegan went 1.2 solid innings and Trevor Rosenthal would kill a Cardinals rally by getting Paul Goldschmidt to bounce into a double play and then striking out Nolan Arenado on three pitches.

The Cardinals made a trade after the game, sending SS Paul DeJong to in-division rival Milwaukee for SP Adrian Houser

Game 3: Stephen Strasburg (3-1, 1.82) vs Jordan Hicks (2-2, 1.83) St. Louis would jump out to a 2-0 lead on a two run home run by Nolan Arenado. He would homer again in the fourth, as would Lars Nootbaar to put the Cardinals up 4-0. Strasburg would leave after 5.1 innings and 84 pitches. Patrick Corbin would relieve him and go two shutout innings before giving up a solo home run to Brendan Donovan. Paul Goldschmidt would walk in the next at-bat and Nolan Arenado would follow that up with his third home run of the game. He would give up another base hit before being pulled for Collin Poche, who gave up a base hit to score the Cardinals 8th run of the game. Washington would finally score in the eighth when Keibert Ruiz doubled and hustled home on a Luis Garcia single. A good throw would have gotten Ruiz, but he was determined not to let the Nationals get shutout and his hustle will hopefully motivate the team in the next game, as this one would end 8-1. Jordan Hicks was lights out, going 6 innings and giving up no runs on three hits, four walks and five strikeouts.

The Cardinals showed why they are one of the beet teams in the league, as their pitching, defense and offense were all on full display in this series.

The Nationals (15-11) now have to fly to Seattle without an off day for three games before flying to Miami directly after that series. The schedule this year has been brutal with several long trips without any time off for travel.

After the game, Patrick Corbin was sent back to AAA and Sean Doolittle was recalled to keep two lefties in the pen. It’s hard to imagine Corbin ever being an MLB-quality pitcher again and Washington will most likely be paying him MLB-level money to pitch in the minors.

The schedule maker at SDS needs to be DFA’d lol he’s got something against the Nationals.

3 games in Washington against Philadelphia
                  4 games in LA

                  3 games in Seattle
                  3 games in Miami

I have limited logistical skills and I could have planned it better than that!

I just peeked ahead to May and the Nationals play 10 days in a row on the East Coast and then fly the San Francisco for three games, then to Arizona for three games before having a single off day. Then after the off day they are back in Washington.

When you get fully vested in your franchise & the moves you have made makes it harder to go away from the current version thar you're playing! That's why it would be really nice & appreciated if carry-over franchise would be implemented.

Those 10 days in a row are tough because you must manually rest your player's. If not you could a pop-up screen injury during batting practice.

It's definitely going to be a grind, and I might be very careful with my key players because of all the injuries I had last season.

Your Nats franchise has me wanting to start my own rebuild but with the new game so close but not really wanting to wait I'm not sure where to start. Reds, Pirates. Idk who has the most fun prospects. Pretty sure I wanna start with trade deadline rosters. Maybe trade Reynolds and reunite McCutcheon? Idk.
You could start on '22 and get used to rebuilding a team. It starts out exciting but by June/July it's a real grind as you continue to lose game after game. However, I'm loving the game more than ever now in year two and seeing real progress with this team.

                                2023 Washington Nationals

The Nationals (15-11) flew cross-country to Seattle to take on the Mariners (14-12) in a three game series. The Mariners retained most of their 95 win team from a year ago, and also added Johnny Cueto, Adam Duvall and Aledmys Diaz in the offseason. Mitch Haniger left Seattle for the Yankees, but he is the only major piece missing in what is a very young and talented team that will likely compete for the AL West crown this year.

Game 1: Mackenzie Gore (3-2, 4.20) vs George Kirby (2-1, 2.40) Seattle got to Gore early, as Adam Duvall hit a two run home run in the second. Washington would respond when Brandon Drury hit a solo shot in the fourth. Washington struggled in the first three innings as the shadows were definitely benefitting the pitchers. The Nationals almost continued the rally in the fourth but Julio Rodriguez made an unbelievable diving catch to end the inning. Mackenzie Gore would be pulled after 4.2 innings as he was already at nearly 90 pitches. He gave up 2 runs on 7 hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Victor Arano would go 2.1 innings, giving up no hits and getting two Ks. Kyle Finnegan pitched the eighth and retired all three batters he faced. For the Mariners, George Kirby went 6IP, giving up a run on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Paul Sewald, Erik Swanson, and Penn Murfee would all go an inning of hitless baseball to give the M’s a 2-1 victory. Washington had few chances to score, and the few opportunities they did have were disrupted by great defensive plays.

Game 2: Josiah Gray (2-2, 3.56) vs Logan Gilbert (2-2, 4.71) The Nationals scored in the top of the first when Yadiel Hernandez homered to right, but the Mariners answered in the bottom half of the inning when Eugenio Suarez singled to score JP Crawford. The Nationals threatened in the third, but Brandon Drury grounded out with the bases loaded to end the inning. Both pitchers seemed to be locked in until the sixth, when Yadiel Hernandez walked and advanced to third on a Brandon Drury single. Joey Meneses would drive in both runners with a double, ending the day for Logan Gilbert. Casey Sadler would come out of the bullpen and give up back to back home runs in his first two batters. Gleyber Torres would hit a two run home run and Anderson Tejeda followed that up with what looked to be a long fly out to right that just kept carrying and barely made it over the wall. Josiah Gray would be pulled after 6 innings, as he was nearing 100 pitches. He pitched a fantastic game, giving up just one run on eight hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. It was definitely a bounce back game for him, as his last two starts haven’t been as sharp. The Nationals continued to score when Joey Meneses hit his first home run of the year off Justus Sheffield in the top of the seventh. Kyle Finnegan would pitch a 1-2-3 seventh and Collin Poche would give up one run in the eighth, but the Nationals would get it back when Luis Garcia doubled and then scored on a Yadiel Hernandez single in the ninth. Aaron Bummer would come in to pitch the ninth, as he was in need of some work, and promptly gave up a solo home run to Adam Duvall. The Mariners then strung together a pair of hits, a walk, and a single by Dylan Moore to make it an 8-5 game. Bummer would then strikeout Kyle Lewis and get Tom Murphy to line out to third to end the ballgame. It was a great win for the Nationals, and the ninth inning rally by the Mariners needn’t be too much cause for concern, as Bummer needed work and was facing a righty-dominant lineup.

Game 3: Zach Davies (1-2, 4.40) vs Robbie Ray (1-3, 3.94) Davies and Ray both started out strong, with a Victor Robles double being the only hit until the top of the third when Lane Thomas hit a solo home run to give the Nats a 1-0 lead. The Nationals should probably have gotten more runs on the board, but an Ildemaro Vargas pop-out to the catcher and Brandon Drury groundout put an end to the attack. The Mariners bounced right back when Adam Duvall homered for the third time in the series to even up the score. That would be all of the scoring until the bottom of the seventh, when Julio Rodriguez hit a solo home run to put the M’s on top. Both starting pitchers were fantastic, Robbie Ray would go 6 innings, give up a run on four hits, with no walks and no strikeouts while Zach Davies would go 6 innings, two runs on three hits, no walks and seven strikeouts. Seattle broke the game open in the bottom of the eighth, scoring five runs off of Kyle Finnegan. Finnegan was one of the best relievers for the Nationals last year but hasn’t been able to duplicate that performance so far in 2023. Washington would lose this one 7-1.

The Nationals (16-13) close the month of April in Seattle, and will start May in Miami facing the Marlins (13-15).

I have updated my spreadsheet to the end of April and added a league leaders tab with just a limited selection of stats (think league leader stats that come across the bottom of the screen in-game).
