Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

I just never could find my sweet spot with 23, so I finally bit the bullet and deleted it off my PS5 yesterday. With about four months to go until 24 comes out, it didn't really make sense to keep trying. Hoping 24 works out better for me, and I'm excited for it.

That being said, four months without baseball isn't going to fly either. So ... welcome back old friend! I reinstalled MLB 21 and plan to pick up where I left off there. I'm in late May of 2023 after winning back-to-back World Series titles with the Braves. Hopefully I can knock out one final season before 24 comes out.

I'll probably post some here, as much as anything to refamiliarize myself with my team. Going to be a little weird having Freddie and Dansby back in the fold.

      2024 Pittsburgh Pirates 08/09-08/10

Overall Record:81-37 (1st NL Central 9.0 over Milwaukee

      Game Results:
      Game 1
      Pirates-4
      Tigers-0

      Game 2
      Pirates-2
      Tiges-1

Pirates win sixth in a row with two game sweep of Tigers

Oneil Cruz hit a two run homerun in game one versus Detroit. That homer made it four consecutive games that Cruz hit a homerun in. That homer also was the first runs in the game. Before that, Spencer Turnbull (Tigers) and Blake Snell (Pirates) battled it out and looked equally impressive. The difference in the game was that Snell was able to keep that going for the full nine while Turnbull got pulled in the top of the 7th.

The complete game shutout was Snell's third on the season which is the team high. He is also tied with several others for second in the NL behind Zack Wheeler of the Phillies.

Game two was another low scoring affair in which both teams again failed to score until the sixth inning. Detroit was the one to get on the board first this time after Akil Baddoo doubled and Ronny Mauricio knocked him in with a rbi single.

That score held up until the Pirates won on an unorthodox walk off in the ninth.

The ninth inning saw Detroit bring in their closer, Matt Wisler in for the save. Drew Maggi was set to be the first to face him, however, Michael Brantley was brought into pinch hit. That move paid off as Brantley reached on an infield single that bounced off a diving Nick Maton's glove. Another move was made to bring in Jack Suwinski to pinch run for Brantley but unfortunately, he was never able to use his speed. The next batter, Endy Rodriguez attempted a sac bunt but the ball bounced up into the air and in front of homeplate. The Tigers catcher, Tyler Malone was unable to catch the ball in the air but was able to throw Suwinski out at second.

At that point, it was still 1-0 in favor of Detroit but Rodriguez was now at first.

The next batter was Oneil Cruz who eventually found himself in a 3-2 count. The Pirates took a risk on the next pitch and put Rodriguez into motion. That risk worked out as Cruz grounded out to second base and Rodriguez ended up on second himself.

From there, a single by Anthony Santander scored Rodriguez and a Ke'Bryan Hayes doubled knocked Santander in and won the game for the Pirates.

The Pirates will now head back home for a seven game stand that starts with three versus the LA Angels (68-50/1st AL West)

Cardinals enter September with commanding divisional lead

The Cardinals (82-57) enter the final month of the regular season with a commanding 17 game lead over the Brewers, as the Cardinals look to clinch their second straight NL Central Divisional title. The Cardinals sit one game ahead of the Braves for the 2nd best record in the NL, and trail the Padres by 7 games for the best record.

The Cardinals played well in August including a stretch where they went 8-2 in 10 games against the two best teams in baseball (Rangers and Padres), and the Dodgers who are likely to secure a wild card spot. The Cardinals did sputter losing 2 of 3 to the Pirates to conclude the month.

With rosters expanded the Cardinals have, for now, added Oswald Peraza to the MLB roster, though its expected that he'll be sent back down to Memphis once Lars Nootbaar returns from the IL in about a week. Zack Thompson was also added to the MLB roster to give the Cardinals a third left handed pitcher out the bullpen.

The Cardinals begin September with a 3 game series against the Angels, who are currently 1.5 games out of the AL wild card race.

        September Schedule:

        3 vs LAA
        3 vs MIL
        3 @ CHW
        3 @ ATL
        3 vs DET
        3 vs CIN
        2 @ MIN
        3 @ MIL

Cardinals beat Brewers to clinch their 2nd straight NL Central title

The Cardinals shutout the Brewers 4-0 Saturday night in St.Louis to clinch their 2nd straight NL Central title, and their 17th divisional title overall.

The NL Central is extremely down this year with the Cardinals being the only team currently over .500 and with the win put the 2nd place Brewers 20 games back with 18 games left in the regular season. The Cardinals are still battling the Braves for the 2nd best record in NL, and hold a 1.5 game lead. They now are behind the Padres by 8 games for the best record.

The Cardinals are trying to avoid being the division winner that plays in the Wild Card series for the 2nd straight season.

Pirates lose first series of August

The Pirates and Angels met for their first and only series of the 2024 season. The Pirates knew the one thing they couldnt do is let Mike Trout beat them. That rings especially true this year after Shohei Ohtani signed with the Twins in the offseason.

Game one was a back and fourth affair that was eventually won by the Angles, 8-7. Trout was responsible for four of those eight and all came via his three homeruns on the day (37 for the year). Neither team's starting pitching was up to par as the Angels Jose Suarez allowed 11 hits and 6 runs in just four innings. Jack Flaherty wasnt much better for the Pirates as he allowed 9 hits and 5 runs in just five innings. Domingo German replaced Flaherty in the sixth and gave up a two run homerun to Ramon Laureano who the Angels acquired via a trade with Oakland in July. Trout then hit his third homer in the seventh and that was what brought them up to eight runs. The Pirates catcher, Endy Rodriguez hit his eighth in the 8th inning to bring the Pirates to within one, however, they couldnt tie it up again as Daniel Bard saved his 41st game of the season.

Games two and three saw both offenses come back to reality and have trouble scoring as the teams took turns winning 3-1.

The Pirates will now finish off their homestand with four versus Miami (59-62/4th NL East) who the Pirates swept and outscored 16-3 in June.

Cardinals take series from Braves, increase lead for #2 seed in Postseason

The Cardinals took 2 games of a 3 game series from the Braves in Atlanta over the weekend and now hold a 1.5 game lead for the 2nd best record in the National League. The Cardinals still trail the Padres by 6 games with about 11/12 to play for all clubs involved.

Tyler Glasnow and Julio Urias picked up victories in this series, while Dakota Hudson faltered for the 2nd straight start down the stretch. Offensively Lars Nootbaar was a force going 7 for 12 with 8 RBIs in the series. Harrison Bader returned to the lineup Sunday after a finger injury and hit his 9th homerun of the season.

The Cardinals will now head home for their final 6 games at Busch Stadium in the 2025 regular season. They welcome the Tigers to town for a 3 game series starting Monday and then the Reds for a 3 game weekend series. After that, the Cardinals will head to Minnesota for a brief two game series with the Twins before heading to Milwaukee for the final regular season series with the Brewers.

Julo Urias continues Cy Young campaign with 21st win

Julio Urias continues his campaign for National League Cy Young award after notching his 21st win against the Braves on Sunday. Urias has career bests in wins (21) IP (224.2), and strikeouts (240) thus far in 2025. He'll likely make one more start before the postseason.

Rangers and Padres clinch playoff berths

The Rangers have clinched their 3rd straight playoff berth by winning the AL West for the 2nd time in 3 seasons. The Rangers also won it in 2023. The Rangers are on the cusp of clinching the best record in the American League.

The Padres have also clinched a playoff berth. They will at worst be a wildcard team, but they are close to clinching both the NL West and best record in the National League.

Dodgers, Braves, and Twins clinch berths to play in October

The Dodgers, Braves, and Twins have all secured their opportunities to play postseason baseball this October.

The Dodgers have clinched a wildcard spot and are expected to secure the number one wildcard seed. They lead the Marlins and Diamondbacks by 7 games with just 8/9 left on the schedule.

The Braves have clinched yet another NL East title. They are battling the Cardinals for the number 2 seed in the National League, avoiding the Wild Card Series. They currently trail St.Louis by 1/2 game.

The Twins have clinched a spot to be at least a wildcard team. They currently lead the White Sox by 3.5 games in the AL Central.

Other postseason notes, the Padres clinched the NL West and the Rangers have clinched the number one seed in the American League.

                  2024 Washington Nationals

Game One: Lucas Giolito (7-8, 5.04) vs Jesus Luzardo (9-5, 3.49)
Miami hit five solo home runs (three off of Lucas Giolito) to take a 5-2 game into the ninth, but with two outs and facing an undefeated Blake Treinen, the Nationals launched a comeback that culminated in a go-ahead two out base hit by Brandon Drury. They would get three consecutive hits off of Treinen before he was taken out for Tanner Scott, who walked in the tying run; leading to Drury’s go-ahead hit. Carl Edwards Jr would give up a solo home run to Joey Bart in the bottom of the ninth but Washington would hold on to take a wild win.

Game Two: Justin Dunn (0-0, 3.38) vs Sixto Sanchez (5-8, 4.11)
The Nationals were able to jump out to a 3-0 lead thanks to some wildness from Sixto Sanchez, but Justin Dunn would lose his command in the fourth, allowing Miami to tie up the game. Dunn, making his first start for Washington, would end up going 3.2 innings, giving up three runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts before turning the ball over to Joan Adon. The Nationals would get two run home runs in the fifth and sixth innings from Brandon Nimmo, allowing them to pull away and take the 7-3 victory. Joan Adon would earn the win despite just going 1.1 innings, allowing no runs, no hits, no walks and no strikeouts.

Game Three: Felipe Escalona (6-5, 4.65) vs Sandy Alcantara (12-5, 2.04)
Washington was able to score four runs off of Alcantara, including a two run home run from Keibert Ruiz. Felipe Escalona did not allow a run until the seventh inning, and he would finish with 6.2 IP, four hits, and five strikeouts. The Marlins would get four consecutive base hits in the ninth off of Hunter Harvey, setting up a save situation for Carl Edwards Jr, who would get the last two batters out to give Washington another series sweep. Brandon Drury was injured in the middle of the game, and it looks like he may be done for the year with a fractured arm. He has been placed on the 60 day IL. Nolan Jones, who was acquired from the Guardians at the trade deadline and was not meant to be in the majors this season, has been called up to replace Drury.

The Nationals (59-58) have gone above the .500 mark for the first time in a long time, but are still in 5th place in the NL East. They will now have a six game homestand against the Phillies (61-55) and Rockies (58-59).

In other news, I was SO close to buying MLBTS 23, as it's on sale for $10 for the Switch...but I just can't give this franchise up. I've spent too much time and am so involved with it that I don't think I could start a new one even with all the new gameplay changes that 2023 brings (scheduling, shift bans, etc...)

                      November 3: Chiefs 3, Blue Rocks 2 (10)

Chandler, AZ (AP) - The Chandler Chiefs captured their first World Series title with a thrilling come from behind, extra inning game seven walk off victory over the El Paso Blue Rocks.

The Chandler Chiefs opened up the 2023 IBL World Series with a 6-2 victory over El Paso at Desert Financial Field. Zach Dossett went 2 for 4 with a two-run home run in the eighth to power the Chiefs to the win.

Steve Escobar (3-0) tossed 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out six. The Chiefs bullpen got the final eight outs, only allowing two base runners.

Rookie Ervin Cordero hit his third home run of the postseason in the second to get the Chiefs on the scoreboard. Jaevan Cooper added a two-run shot in the third off of Bryan Higgins to put Chandler up 3-0. Cooper would drive in another run in the sixth as he drew a bases loaded walk to put the Chiefs up 4-0.

El Paso would get two back in the seventh on back-to-back RBI doubles from Casey Moore and Eli Castaneda, but that was all that the Blue Rocks could manage offensively.

On Friday night, the Chandler Chiefs exploded for 13 runs on 19 hits in a 13-8 victory to grab a 2-0 series lead. Carl Lentzkow led the way, going 3 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs for the Chiefs.

Chandler would grab a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a Lentzkow three-run home run. But the Blue Rocks immediately responded in the second as Brandon Gayle tied it up with a three-run triple..

Chandler would then take over, scoring five in the third and three in the fourth to go up 11-3. In the third, Jaevan Cooper homered, the solo shot was his second of the series and put Chandler up 4-3. Cory Law would single home Ervin Cordero and Henry Ruiz would double home Lentzkow and Law. North then doubled home Ruiz to put the Chiefs up 8-3.

In the fourth, Mike Anderson hit a two-run home run and Carl Lentzkow singled home Cordero to make it 11-3.

The Blue Rocks would get back to within three at 11-8, but the Chiefs bullpen would close the door to help Chandler to the victory.

Brandon Gayle went 3 for 5 with two doubles, a triple and three RBIs in the loss for the Blue Rocks. Tommie Bennett went 4 for 5 with two RBIs.

As the series moved to El Paso, the Blue Rocks pulled out a 6-4 victory to get back in the series. Bruno de la Cruz (4-0) picked up the win for El Paso, tossing seven innings, allowing three runs and striking out six.

Chandler went up 1-0 in the second on a Reynaldo Pulido solo home run.

The Blue Rocks would respond with three in the third. Brandon Gayle singled home Eli Castaneda to tie the ball game. Josh Hawk and Moore drew a bases loaded walks to put the Blue Rocks up 3-1.

They would increase that lead to 4-1 in the fourth on a Josh Hawk RBI single.

Cory Law would get the Chiefs back to within one in the top of the sixth, blasting a two-run home run off of Bruno de la Cruz. It was his fourth home run of the playoffs.

But El Paso had an answer in the bottom half, Brandon Gayle doubled home Pressley and Josh Hawk singled him home to put El Paso back up by three.

Chandler would load the bases with no outs in the ninth, but Henry Ruiz grounded into a 1-2-3 double play and Stanton Brickman flew out to the warning track to end the ball game with Sam Lopez tight-roping his way to a fourth postseason save.

Brandon Gayle went 3 for 5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, with Josh Hawk driving in three runs in the key victory.

On Monday night the Chiefs moved to within a game of their first championship as they dominated El Paso 7-0. Forrest Hughes (2-0) tossed six shutout innings and Cory Law did the damage offensively for the visitors as they cruised to a game four victory.

The Chiefs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second on a Cory Law three-run home run, his fifth of the post season. They would increase that lead to four runs in the fourth on a Carl Lentzkow solo home run, and would add three insurance runs in the top of the ninth. A Zach Dossett RBI single and Ervin Cordero two-run double put Chandler up 7-0.

The Chiefs bullpen tossed three shutout innings, allowing no hits and only allowing one base runner.

On Tuesday evening and facing elimination, the El Paso Blue Rocks exploded for 18 hits in an 11-1 romp over Chiefs to send the series back to Chandler. Brandon Gayle, making his case for series MVP, went 3 for 5 with a double, home run, four RBIs and three runs scored as the Blue Rocks won on a rainy evening in El Paso.

El Paso jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Shuheii Takahashi and Josh Hawk RBI singles.

An Ervin Cordero solo home run in the top of the second got the Chiefs on the board.

But El Paso would put this one away with three in the bottom of the second and two in the third. In the second, Brandon Gayle hit a three-run home run off of Chandler starter Vina. Then in the third, Eli Castaneda hit a two-run home run to put the Blue Rocks up 7-1. That chase Vina from the game.

The Blue Rocks would add three more runs in the sixth on a Gayle RBI single, Takahashi RBI double and Josh Hawk RBI triple.

Alfonso Murillo (2-1) tossed eight innings, allowing one run on three hits, while striking out seven and walking one. Diego Vina (0-2) lasted just 2 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs on ten hits.

Game Six was a thriller as the El Paso Blue Rocks outslugged the Chiefs 9-8 to force a deciding game seven. El Paso scored four times in the top of the first, then rallied with three in the top of the seventh to pull out the win.

The Blue Rocks would bat around in the opening inning, scoring four times. Josh Hawk tripled home Brandon Gayle to put the Blue Rocks up 1-0. Tommie Bennett would single home Hawk. Bud Perez then added a two-run single to make it 4-0.

Stanton Brickman singled home Jaevan Cooper in the bottom half to get the Chiefs in the board. They would cut it to 4-3 in the second on back-to-back solo home runs from Scotty North and Zach Dossett.

El Paso would extend the lead back to three runs in the third on a Bud Perez RBI single and Homer Pressley walking in a run with the bases loaded.

But Chandler chipped away. In the fourth, Scotty North hit a two-run home run, his second of the game, to cut the lead to 6-5. Then in the fifth back-to-back RBI doubles from Cory Law and Carl Lentzkow gave Chandler a 7-6 lead.

An RBI double from Shuheii Takahashi toed the game at 7-7 in the seventh. Josh Hawk then lined a double off the wall in right, scoring Takahashi, to put the Blue Rocks up 8-7. Moore would single home Hawk to give the Blue Rocks a two tun cushion.

In the bottom half the Chiefs loaded the bases with none out, but only managed to score one on an RBI groundout from Zach Dossett. Brandon Gayle may have saved the game and series as he made a diving catch on a soft liner from Jaevan Cooper to end the inning. If that had fallen, the Chiefs would have retaken the lead late.

Sam Lopez would come on in the ninth and after giving up a one out double to Cory Law, got Henry Ruiz to fly out to center and struck out Scotty North to end the game and send the series to a deciding game seven.

Game Seven was a classic. Chandler rallied for two run sin the bottom of the eighth, then won it in the tenth 3-2 to capture their first World Series title over the El Paso Blue Rocks.

El Paso grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth as Shuheii Takahashi tripled to open the inning and scored a an RBI ground out from Josh Hawk. The Blue Rocks would extend that lead to 2-0 in the seventh as Bud Perez hit a sacrifice fly to score Tommie Bennett and it looked like the Blue Rocks were in position to capture the title.

But in the eighth, Zach Dossett lined a one-out single to left off of the diving glove of Shuheii Takahashi and Jaevan Cooper doubled off the wall in left to setup runners on second and third. The Blue Rocks brought in Lee Romero and he struck out Stanton Brickman. He worked the count to 1-2 on Mike Anderson before he blasted one back up the middle to score both Dossett and Cooper to tie the ball game at 2-2.

Then in the tenth, after closer Jim Miller sent down the Blue Rocks in order, Zach Dossett hit a one-out line drive off the wall in left for a double. Jaevan Cooper lined out to short for the second out. Stanton Brickman then lined an 0-2 pitch back up the middle into center to score Dossett and Chandler won their first IBL World Series title.

Ervin Cordero won the World Series MVP for Chandler. Cory Law was named the Desert League Playoff MVP with Eli Castaneda winning it in the Mountain League. Cordero went 11 for 27 (.407) with two doubles, two home runs and four RBIs in the series.

Chandler finished (96-66), good for the second best record in the IBL. They defeated Mesa in the Wild Card game 4-2, then took care of Gilbert, the team with the best record in the IBL, three games to one, and swept Henderson to reach the World Series.

Cardinals and Braves tied for 2nd best record entering final weekend

The Cardinals and Braves are tied for the 2nd best record (93-66) in the National League heading into the final weekend series of the season.

The Braves will be at home against the Marlins who are trying to secure a wildcard spot. They are currently the 2nd wild card team just ahead of the Diamondbacks and Phillies.

The Cardinals will be in Milwaukee for a 3 game series with the Brewers. The Cardinals will turn to Dakota Hudson, Julio Urias, and Jack Flaherty to take the ball and try to avoid the wildcard series.

In other news the Padres clinched the best record in the NL, the Twins clinched the AL Central, and the White Sox clinched a wild card spot.

Here is a look at the final positional rankings for each team before the start of the offseason. Chandler and San Diego made big jumps from the start of the 2023 season, while Amarillo and St George had big drop offs.

Cardinals earn 2nd best record and will be in the NLDS

A year after winning the division but having to play in the 3 game Wildcard Series, the Cardinals this year have finished with the 2nd best record in the National League and will begin postseason play in the NLDS against the winner of the Braves/Diamondbacks series.

The Cardinals finished the season with a sweep over the Brewers in Milwaukee while the Braves dropped 2 of three to the Marlins in their final series of the year.

The Cardinals will now be able to put together their rotation for the NLDS and allow a few banged up players (Carlson/Ankle, Gallegos/back) to heal before starting play. The Cardiinals did use Julio Urias on Saturday, so its unlikely that he will get the ball for Game 1 of the NLDS. Its likely that Jack Flaherty will start Game 1 and the rest of the rotation will be determined after that.
