So in the middle of May, my Astros have a 2.5 game lead over the Angels in the division. We’re starting to roll but there is still one major weakness for us… Lance McCullers Jr. His ERA is now above 7.00 and he is getting shelled basically every time he steps on the mound to start a game.
So I decided to do something that has been talked about with him for a long time but front office has never made the decision… I’m putting him in the bullpen. And since Hunter Brown is currently throwing a 2.03 ERA in AAA, it was time to bring him up. So Hunter Brown will enter the rotation. McCullers will go to the bullpen, and Blake Taylor was sent down to AAA.
Hunter Brown’s first game on the bump for us this season came against the Cubs. And our offense did something I have NEVER seen before. We hit three grand slams in one inning. Jeremy Peña, Martin Maldonado and Yordan Alvarez all came up to bat in the second inning with the bases loaded and they all emptied them with a knock over the fence. All of them with no outs as well. The Cubs had to go through five pitchers just to get out of the inning.
By the end of the second inning we were up 16-0. That is some pretty nice run support for your first major league start of the season. Brown ended up throwing 5 1/3 innings with 7 Ks and no runs allowed. We won the game 21-3.
