2023 Washington Nationals
Game One: Josiah Gray (6-8, 3.09) vs David Peterson (4-6, 2.99)
There wasn’t much offense in this game until the Mets mounted a two out rally in the fifth to score two runs on base hits from Luis Guillorme and Christian Pache. That would be the entire offense for this game; Washington would finish the game with no runs on two hits, and the Mets would have a total of 6 hits with only two runners crossing the plate. Both teams were able to preserve the bullpens: David Peterson went 8 innings, striking out 6 and walking one and Tommy Kahnle would get the save. Josiah Gray went eight innings, striking out five and walking one.
Game Two: Zach Davies (7-7, 3.56) vs Max Scherzer (5-10, 4.02)
The Mets again got a 2-0 lead on Washington, this time they led off the third with a walk by Roberto Perez and then back to back doubles from Mark Canha and Jeff McNeil.Tyler Stephenson and Eduardo Escobar went back to back in the sixth to put the Mets up 4-0. Washington’s offense continued to struggle, Max Scherzer shut them out on four hits through seven innings before turning it over to the bullpen. The Nationals also went to their bullpen in the seventh, bringing in Cade Cavalli to keep his arm loose. He gave up a two run home run to Pete Alonso, followed by a double from Tyler Stephenson and an RBI single by Eduardo Escobar. The Nationals are shutout for the second game in a row, but at least Andrew Vaughn was able to get two hits and show the club what he is capable of.
Game Three: Lucas Giolito (6-9, 3.58) vs Andrew Heaney (3-9, 4.56)
The Nationals finally get a run in the series; Brady House hit an automatic double that would have scored Victor Robles from first if it did not bounce over the wall, but Kike Hernandez followed with a sac fly. Andrew Vaughn nearly drove in House with a sharp line drive but Luis Guillorme made a fantastic diving stop to end the inning. The Mets would tie the game on a Francisco Lindor sac fly in the fourth, and they would take the lead in the fifth when Luis Guillorme hit a bases loaded sac fly. The Nationals rallied in a big way in the sixth; Brady House led off with a double and scored on a line drive from Kike Hernandez. Andrew Vaughn followed with a single off of newly entered reliever Jordan Yamamoto. He would then strike out Joey Meneses and Gleyber Torres, but Anderson Tejeda would single to score Hernandez and Brandon Nimmo would double to score Vaughn and Tejeda to put the Nationals up 6-2. Lucas Giolito would start the sixth inning but gave up a base hit to Pete Alonso followed by a two run home run from Francisco Lindor. Giolito would exit with five innings pitched, giving up four runs on eighth hits, no walks and seven strikeouts. Victor Arano, Colin Poche and Aaron Bummer all went one shutout inning a piece and Trevor Rosenthal remained perfect on save situations while striking out two in the ninth.
The Nationals are able to take the last game in the series and now sit at 49-56 on the year. They will have a day off before welcoming in the lowly Giants for a three game series at home.
