Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

I've done a poor job recently of updating my franchise, but hopefully that is going to change with the new season upon us.

But for now, here is the 2025 season wrap up.

Cardinals season ends in NLCS to the Dodgers

The Cardinals 2025 season has come to an end as they lost to the Dodgers in the NLCS in 5 games. The Cardinals were once again part of the Wildcard Series as they fell apart in the final two weeks of the season thus allowing the Dodgers to get home field advantage in the National League and the Braves to be the 2nd best divisional winner.

The Cardinals faced the Giants in the Wild Card Series and made quick work winning the first two games to advance to the NLDS to face the Braves, the team the Cardinals beat in the NLCS last year. After falling behind 2-0 in the series, the Cardinals would rally and win 3 straight to advance to their second straight NLCS, this time facing the Dodgers, the team the Cardinals beat in the NLDS last year.

But unfortunately another trip to the World Series wasn't the result of this year's NLCS, but instead a lackluster, disappointing end to what was a roller coaster season. The Dodgers would go on and sweep the Rays in the World Series to win their 2nd World Series Championship in 3 years.

The Cardinals did take some hardware home as Tommy Edman and Dylan Carlson won gold gloves. Julio Urias won both the NL Cy Young and NL MVP award.

The offseason will be a busy one for the Cardinals who have a lot of contract options and free agents this year. They also will have some key decisions to make on certain players as they fill out their organizational roster for the 2026 season.

But for now, its time for a look back on a season that started poorly, got turned around and saw the Cardinals become one of the best teams in baseball, to a disappointing end in the NLCS.

On to 2026 where the quest for #12 will continue.

I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Cardinals strikeout during exclusive resigning period

The Cardinals knew going into the offseason that they had a lot of decisions and roster building/shakeup to deal with, but they didn't expect this. The Cardinals went thru the exclusive free agent signing period without getting one person to re-sign versus hitting free agency. They also had Tyler Glasnow and Jack Flaherty both decline their player options and hit the open market.

Now that is leading to nervousness amongst the front office and the fanbase alike as to just how the 2026 roster will look come Spring Training. The list of Cardinal free agents are:]

        Max Fried
        Jack Flaherty (declined player option)
        Tyler Glasnow (declined player option)
        Alex Reyes
        Ryan Helsley
        Genesis Cabrera
        Chris Stratton (no offer made)
        Paul Goldschmidt (no offer made)
        Tyler O'Neill
        Tommy Edman
        Paul DeJong (no offer made)

That is a hefty list of players that the Cardinals knew some would want to test the market or would be non-tendered, but the expectation was that Flaherty, Helsley, Reyes, Cabrera, Edman and O'Neill would re-sign as all were given lucrative offers. But alas, they all have decided to test free agency and thus could really send the Cardinals offseason plans into the wastebasket with a new plan formulated.

And the free agent market if fairly deep this year led by Vladimir Gurrero Jr, Zac Gallen, Dylan Cease, Bryan Reynolds, Bo Bichette, and a host of others that doesn't include the Cardinals free agents.

Going to be an interesting offseason. Hopefully the Cardinals are able to find the pieces to put together another NL Central crown and another deep run in October.

Cardinals re-sign Ryan Helsley and Alex Reyes

The Cardinals fanbase and organization can breathe a little easier as they have re-signed RHP Alex Reyes (3 year/$22.5MM) and RHP Ryan Helsley (5 year/$70MM) to contracts to keep the bullpen strong in the back end.

Helsley and Reyes will join Giovanny Gallegos as the only returning regular arms in the bullpen thus far, but we have a lot of offseason left to go. But this is a big signing for the team.

Now if they can get Jack Flaherty to re-sign to help bolster the rotation that is likely going to lose Max Fried and Tyler Glasnow, that would be a big sigh of relief.

Genesis Caberera takes Twins offer over Cardinals

And just like that the Cardinals lost a big arm in the bullpen as LHP Genesis Cabrera signed with the Twins for 3 years @ $24M instead of the Cardinals offer of 2 years at $18M. I guess the extra year was big for the young lefty. The Cardinals offered him a longer contract during the exclusive negotiation period, but he wasn't interested and instead was looking for a shorter contract to hit free agency again in a few years.

Big loss for the Cardinals who now will need to find lefties for the bullpen with Cabrera (Twins) and AJ Minter (Braves) signing elsewhere, although the Cardinals never tendered a contract to Minter.

ML WILD CARD: RIO RANCHO (87-76) @ SANTA FE (91-71)
            Stadium: Coca-Cola Park (Capacity: 10,713)

            October 4: Owlz 10, Silver Bullets 5

Santa Fe, NM (AP) - The Rio Rancho Owlz pounded out 14 hits in a 10-5 victory over Santa Fe in the Mountain League Wild Card game to advance to the ML Division Series where they will face off against El Paso. Darrick Larkin went 2 for 4 with a home run and drove in one in the upset win for Rio Rancho.

Larkin got things going in the third for Rio Rancho with a solo home run to left off of Pat Mehnutzak. But the Silver Bullets would respond immediately as Dezi Azerod blasted a two-run shot to left in the bottom half to give Santa Fe a 2-1 lead. But that would be all for the Santa Fe highlights in this one in front of a sellout crowd at Coca-Cola Park.

The Owlz would tie it up on a Dominguez RBI double in the top of the fourth. Eric Pressley then lined a two-run single to put Rio Rancho up for good at 4-2. Merton Bannerman would hit a solo home run in the fifth off of 18-game winner Ron Sposato to extend Rio Rancho’s lead.

Elviz Velasquez would hit a two-run home run in the seventh as the Owlz stretched their lead to 7-3. A Ryan Williams solo home run in the bottom half cut the lead to 7-4. But the Owlz would add three more in the eighth to salt this one away and move on.

For Santa Fe, it is another disappointing end after another successful season. Last year, the Silver Bullets won the ML Central, but lost to Colorado Springs in the MLDS.

Rio Rancho will now advance to take on El Paso. The Owlz won the season series (10-9). That series will begin on Friday afternoon in El Paso.

Santa Fe announced before the game that the team will rebrand this offseason after complaints about the team’s current name, the Silver Bullets. Details should become available soon and the team hopes to unveil a new name and branding in the coming months ahead of the 2024 season.

Darrick Larkin’s third inning home run got things going for the Owlz in their 10-5 win.

I updated in months because I am not playing as nearly as much as I used to. But the game plays pretty good and still competitive to me with the settings I use. With that being said, my Braves are 15-15, second place (1.5GB) to the 1st place Marlins (16-13).

We are about to play our second series against them in Miami 3-game set. Realism story line 2B Luis Arraez .398/.446/.466 in 103 AB. It is funny he is very easy to get in a trade. potential is at 77. I have Albies at 2B .317/.369/.525 6HR,17RBI with pop.

We will also be facing Marlin's ace RHP Alcantara (3-0,2.11ERA,42.2IP). Oh he'll dueling against Strider (3-1,2.63ERA,37.2,53K).

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

Cardinals re-sign Jack Flaherty and Tommy Edman

The Cardinals can breathe a lot easier now as they re-signed Jack Flaherty to an 8 year/$250M contract that will undoubtedly keep Flaherty in St.Louis for the remainder of his career. Flaherty helped bolster a dynamic one-two punch at the top of a rotation last year that was stacked. Flaherty was 14-9 with a 3.23 ERA and he was 11 punchouts away from 200 strikeouts on the season. Flaherty will again be relied upon as the "right handed ace" behind Julio Urias.

Tommy Edman returns after winning a gold glove last year and after being an all-star. Edman didn't have his best average at the plate hitting just .243 but he did crank out a career high 17 homeruns with 56 RBIs all while stealing 38 bases. Not bad for a lead off hitter. Edman will likely take the everyday shortstop job but could potentially end up at 2nd base or even left field as the Cardinals are unlikely to bring back Tyler O'Neill.

Cardinals bolster their bullpen with left handers

The Cardinals have worked on replacing left handers Genesis Cabrera and AJ Minter who found new homes this winter. And they have done that by signing 4 lefties thus far:

                Andrew Chafin
                Daniel Norris
                Matt Strahm
                Tyler Matzek

All 4 signed one year deals and now are for a lot of money, so the risk is minimal for 4 arms that were at worst serviceable in the majors last season. All will likely get a good look this Spring along with Zack Thompson as cracking the Opening Day 26 man roster.

Cardinals sign Christian Vazquez to a one year deal

The Cardinals have signed veteran backstop Christian Vazquez to a one year deal worth just over $4M. Vazquez will serve as the back up to Ivan Herrera most likely this spring, replacing Ali Sanchez who may or may not return to that role. Even if Sanchez returns, the Cardinals need more veteran deep behind the plate, as Herrera and Sanchez both suffered injuries late last year that put Zach Britton and Daulton Rushing into the mix, and neither was ready for the job.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

As an XSX guy, I've never played The Show all that much until this year, thank you game pass. Last baseball game I really enjoyed was MLB 2k.

That being said, I'm using Dynamic Difficulty and have played every game so far in my Cardinals franchise and I'm having an absolute BLAST.

I wanted to give an update after 123 games.

We are currently 73-50, 13 games in front of the Brewers.

We made 2 trades at the deadline: Acquired SP Trevor Rogers from the Marlins for SP Dakota Hudson and prospect 3B Brent Marino. We also Acquired RP Alex Lange from the Tigers for SP Steven Matz.

Rogers was 3-13 but is young and has a huge upside, we slotted him in the 5th spot of the rotation.

Lange had an ERA of 5.15 and we hoped a change of scenery would help him as a setup guy to CL Ryan Helsley, especially after Giovanny Gallegos tore his labrum and is out for the season.

                  Current Rotation:
                  Miles Mikolas (8-7) 153.2 innings, 143 k's, 2.23 ERA
                  Jordan Montgomery (11-7) 142.1 innings, 116 k's, 3.73 ERA
                  Jack Flaherty (10-4) 143 innings, 131 k's, 3.46 ERA
                  Adam Wainwright (9-6) 147.2 innings, 115 k's, 3.17 ERA
                  Trevor Rogers (4-12) 117.2 innings, 109 k's, 5.20 ERA

                  LRP Zack Thompson 2.02 ERA
                  LRP Jake Woodford 3.66 ERA
                  MRP Chris Stratton 2.27 ERA
MRP Bradley Gale (promoted from AAA) 0.00 ERA (1 inning so far - released Drew Verhagen)
                  MRP Jordan Hicks 3.81 ERA
                  SU Alex Lange 4.71 ERA
                  SU Genesis Cabrera 2.05 ERA
CL Ryan Helsley 2.96 ERA 34 SV

                  Lineup:
                  2B Tommy Edman .282/26D/1T/4HR/46RBI
                  RF Lars Nootbaar .303/22D/3T/11HR/36RBI
                  1B Paul Goldschmidt .307/37D/17HR/60RBI
                  3B Nolan Arenado .274/26D/15HR/53RBI
                  LF Tyler O'Neill .299/18D/9T/27HR/64RBI
                  C Wilson Contreras .280/23D/17HR/60RBI
                  CF Dylan Carlson .297/24D/4T/9HR/49RBI
                  DH Brendan Donovan .321/24D/3HR/34RBI
                  SS Paul Dejong .205/12D/9HR/30RBI

                  Bench:
                  C Andrew Knizner .210/3D/9RBI
INF Errol Robinson (call up from AA due to Gorman injury) .154
                  OF Oscar Mercado .282/9D/2HR/16RBI
                  OF Juan Yepez .260/14D/1T/12HR/36RBI
                  INF Nolan Gorman (injured) .235/12D/1T/4HR/30RBI

We resigned everyone for next season EXECEPT for the players below who will likely see FA:

                  SP Jordan Montgomery
                  SP Adam Wainwright
                  SS Paul Dejong
                  RP Chris Stratton
                  OF Oscar Mercado
                  RP Jo Jo Romero
                  RP Andre Pallante
                  C Andrew Knizner
(a few more who are lower minor league players)

                  Prospects in the top 50:
                  #11 OF Jordan Walker
                  #20 SP Evan Brown
                  #44 INF Masyn Wynn
                  #48 SP Tink Hence

                  Draft:
SS Fernando Amoros 79 POT (pick #21)
                  SP Julian Cabrera 88 POT
                  2B Bill Duvall 67 POT
                  3B Eric Wolff 82 POT
                  SP Eljah Micklus 74 POT

We have the 3rd best record in the NL so our goal is to try to get into the 1st or 2nd spot so we can avoid the WC round but the Dodgers are tearing it up and the Mets have also been really good.

We are pretty set for 2024 and I've held off on resigning Montgomery and Waino as I'd like to get a #1 SP in the offseason, Mikolas has been stellar but he's not getting any younger and I fear regression is coming. We can always look at Libertore and Brown in Spring Training. Libertore did pitch fairly well when we had him up at the ML level and Brown has been great in AAA.

Top prospect Jordan Walker will likely spend 2024 in AAA as our outfield is set with O'Neill, Carlson and Nootbaar.

DL WILD CARD: MESA (90-72) @ CHANDLER (96-66)
Stadium: Desert Financial Park (Capacity: 11,783)

                    October 5: Chiefs 4, Solar Sox 2

Chandler, AZ (AP) - The Chandler Chiefs hit two, two-run home runs in the second innings, then made that stand up, as they defeated the Mesa Solar Sox 4-2 in the Desert League Wild Card game on Thursday evening as Desert Financial Field in downtown Chandler. Stanton Brickman hit one of those home runs and went 2 for 4 as the Chiefs will advance to the DLDS where they will face the Gilbert Barnstormers.

Chandler got all of their offense in the bottom of the second inning with two-run home runs from Zach Dossett and Stanton Brickman.

Steve Escobar would pitch well enough to make those runs hold up. Escobar went six innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. He stranded the bases loaded in the sixth, striking out Alberto Pulido to leave the game with a two run lead. The Chandler bullpen held up with Jim Miller working a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up the save.

Welker Washington homered for Mesa in the loss that ends a great season that saw the Solar Sox win 90 games.

Vernon Arnez took the loss for Mesa, pitching only two innings and allowing all four runs on seven hits. Starting pitcher Luke Palmer came on in relief and pitched five shutout innings to keep Mesa in the ballgame.

The matchups for the divisional series are all set now with Chandler facing Gilbert and Scottsdale facing Henderson. Over in the Mountain League, it will be Rio Rancho facing El Paso with Flagstaff meeting up with Austin.

Chandler’s Stanton Brickman’s great season continued with a home run in the Wild Card game.

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

Finished up the trade deadline yesterday and added a much needed boost of talent to the A's farm system. I ended up handling trades for everyone (using a Random Number Generator to determine who got which players from sellers) because the CPU trading seems even worse this year. Fun fact, in my franchise Amed Rosario also went to the Dodgers.

My A's ended up trading RP Zach Jackson, SS Aledmys Diaz, DH Brent Rooker, SP Paul Blackburn, SP Daulton Jeffries, SP James Kaprielian, RP Sam Moll, SP Drew Rucinski, and RP Drew Steckenrider.

In return, I ended up with prospects 3B Deyvison De Los Santos, 3B Justyn-Henry Malloy, SP Anderson Espinoza, SS Casey Martin, RF Jhailyn Ortiz, RP McKinley Moore, SP Jaden Hill, 2B Eguy Rosario, RF Torso Ornelas, 1B Alexander Pena, and SP Max Rajcic. I also picked up major league level relievers Adrian Morejon and Peter Lambert. Espinoza is the big prospect (67 ovr with A potential, albeit at 25 years old), but I'm also pretty excited about Malloy (already 68 ovr at 22) and De Los Santos (66 ovr at 19).

Also, just for funsies, I made minor league deals for knuckleballer Matt Waldron and RP Reggie Crawford (who is a lefty with 1B as a secondary position, though he just has 4 PA on the year; irl he's DHed a few times in A ball this year and is 4 for 16 with a HR).

Lineup hasn't changed much, but it's a serious youth movement in the rotation now.

                        2024 Washington Nationals

San Diego Padres (15-14) vs Washington Nationals (14-14)

Game One: German Marquez vs Josiah Gray
Marquez left after throwing just four pitches, it seems as though there was some tightness in his back, and it does not appear to be a serious injury. Alex Young would enter and end up going four innings, giving up a solo home run to Mitch Haniger in the fourth and a three run home run to Andrew Vaughn in the fifth, ending his day. Haniger would hit another solo home run in the sixth, off of Nabil Crismatt, to make it a 5-0 game. This is Haniger’s second 2-homer game in a row, and he now leads the NL with 14. The Padres would rally in the seventh with a two run home run from Juan soto. They would get one run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly off of Aaron Bummer from Jose Azocar, and make it a one run game in the ninth when Trent Grisham hit a sacrifice fly. The Padres nearly tied the game but Luis Campusano was thrown out at home to end the game, giving the Nationals the nerve wracking victory. Both Bummer and Rosenthal were shaky out of the ‘pen, not for the first time this year.

Game Two: Joe Musgrove vs Cade Cavalli

San Diego took the lead in the second on a sac fly from Jurickson Profar, and scored a second run in the fifth on a two out base hit from Bryan Rocchio. Joe Musgrove was perfect through five, but hit Keibert Ruiz to start the sixth. That seemed to be his undoing, as he would throw a pitch to the backstop to Gleyber Torres, allowing Ruiz to go to second. Torres would strikeout, but CJ Abrams would drive in Ruiz with a base hit, and then steal second. He would come around to score on a Luis Garcia single, tying the game at 2. The Padres would retake the lead in the eighth when Jake Cronenworth hit a seeing eye single off of Carl Edwards Jr. San Diego would go on to win 3-2, allowing just the two runs in two base hits.

Game Three: Yu Darvish vs Stephen Strasburg
Strasburg was all over the place early, and it cost him as he hung a pitch and Bryan Rocchio took him deep for a three run home run in the second. Jurickson Profar would hit a solo home run in the fourth and Juan Soto would add another in the sixth, ending the day for Strasburg. His line went as follows: 5.1 innings, 6 hits, five runs, a walk, four strikeouts. Joan Adon would pitch the final 3.2 innings, giving up two runs on five hits, no walks and a strikeout. Yu Darvish was dominant, going seven shutout innings, giving up just two hits, three walks and nine strikeouts in a dominant win for San Diego.

The Nationals (15-16) should have an easier time as they now will go to Denver for four games against the Rockies (11-20).

                        Escalona Arrives!
Major news from the front office: They have decided to call up No. 2 overall prospect Felipe Escalona, who will get the start in Game 1 in Colorado. The 21 year old from Mexico was drafted in the first round in 2022, and spent 2023 at AA before starting the 2024 season at AAA.The Nationals knew he would eventually make his MLB debut this year, but they did not expect to call him up quite so early. The starting rotation and bullpen have both struggled, and even though the Nationals are having a decent start to the season, they are still in last place in the NL East. While Coors Field may not be the best place for a pitching debut, it was Escalona’s scheduled day to start at AAA and the front office wanted to keep him on schedule as much as possible.

Starting my 4th season and I’ve played road games at 13 of the 15 American League parks.

Only two I have not played at are Yankee Stadium and in Oakland.

Braves take the 3-games series from the Marlins, 2-1.

All 3 games were great and well played and managed. Game one was the only decided by the bullpen of each team, which I loss in extra innings 5-4. Game two SP Strider (Braves) outdueled SP Alcantara, by 7IP,9K,4H, R & ER. We won 3-1. Game three, Braves SP Wright (8.0IP,3H,0R,0ER,1BB & 9K) outlasted Marlins SP Rogers (6.1IP,4H,2R,2ER,1BB & 4K).

We gained a game. We are now 17-16, 0.5GB of the 1st place Marlins (17-15).
Up next back at home at Truist Park, 3-game series vs. O's and 2 game set against our Interleague rival Red Sox.

Have a question for everyone. In order to get through multiple seasons, I've been playing 1 game, swimming 5, and playing another.

This is the first time I've made into the playoffs. When you play playoffs, do you still sim a portion of it, like the reg. Season. Or do you play all game?

I was thinking of playing 1, simming 1. I figure if it headed to a game 7, I can play it, plus if it as a 5-7 game series, I'd be able to play a min of 1 game at home and 1 away.

What do you guys think? How do you play your playoffs?
