Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

The Mets have stolen back to back games in extra innings against the A’s and Dodgers thanks to Edwin Diaz being able to strand the free runner. Max Scherzer continues to struggle, with an ERA of 9 through four starts. He has been placed on the 15 day IL with shoulder fatigue and Elieser Hernandez has been recalled from AAA. David Peterson will join the team when Scherzer’s turn in the rotation comes up again. The Mets currently sit at 8-9, three games behind Atlanta.

Okay I've narrowed down my franchise choices to Seattle, Arizona or Miami. I like young teams with an exciting prospect to call up and a somewhat realistic chance of being successful. Thoughts?

          2023 Washington Nationals

Game One: Alex Cobb (5-9,5.36) vs Stephen Strasburg (9-7, 2.03)
The Giants got a run in the first as Jon Berti, who has been a nuisance to the Nationals since 2022, led the game off with a base hit, advanced to second on a ground out and stole third. He then scored on a ground out by Luis Gonzalez. JD Davis led off the second with a double and scored on a sac fly from Patrick Mazeika. The Nationals responded with two in the third when Andrew Vaughn hit a two out double with bases loaded. Alex Cobb would leave the game in the fourth with an injury* and he was replaced by Zack Littell. Washington would get two more runs in the fifth; Brady House doubled and scored on a two out double from Yadiel Hernandez, who would then score when Andrew Vaughn singled. The Giants would rally back thanks to Eli White, who doubled and scored on a Luis Gonzalez single in the eighth and then singled to score Adrian Del Castillo in the ninth to tie the game and Trevor Rosenthal his first blown save of the year. The Giants had the luck of having Jon Berti start the tenth inning as the ghost runner on second and he would score on a Luis Gonzalez single. Heliot Ramos and JD Davis would hit back to back singles to score another run. That would be the ballgame as Anthony Bender came on and earned the close in the bottom of the tenth.
          *

Game Two: Kyle Harrison (0-1, 4.32) vs MacKenzie Gore (7-9, 4.04)
San Francisco started the game with a two out rally to go up 2-0 after a half inning of play. Tony Wolters, Luis Gonzalez, Clint Frazier and JD Davis all hit singles to put runs in the board. The Nationals would get one run back in the bottom half after Brady House double and then scored on a two out base hit from Joey Meneses. Gleyber Torres was injured making a diving stop in the third, and had to leave the game*. Anderson Tejeda would come in to replace him at third base. The Nationals tied the game in the sixth when Anderson Tejeda scored on a Lane Thomas single. Thomas was thrown out attempting to reach second to end the inning. The game would remain tied until the tenth, when Tony Wolters singled and advanced Jon Berti to third. Berti would then score when Luis Garcia bunted and the Nationals took the out at second. Brady House came through in the bottom of the tenth, hitting a single up the middle to score Victor Robles and tie the game at 3. Then with two down in the bottom of the 11th and Joey Meneses on third, Brandon Nimmo hit a double to the gap to give the Nationals a walk off win.
*Gleyber Torres suffered a strained calf and will be out for a few days.

Game Three: Carlos Rodon (3-11, 3.70) vs Josiah Gray (6-9, 3.04)
Rodon continued his domination of Washington, going seven innings of shutout ball, giving up four hits and striking out five. Josiah Gray was nearly as good, but he gave up a solo home run to JD Davis in the fourth en route to a seven inning, six hit and six strikeout outing. The Giants added a second run when Adrian Axel Castillo hit a solo home run off of Cade Cavalli in the ninth. The Nationals had a chance in the ninth, with two in and one out; it would be there best chance to score all game long but they could not get a man across and ended up being shutout.

The Nationals continue to have offensive issues, but will let look to have a better outing when the Mets come to Washington for a two game series.

Nationals stun Braves on Opening Day

Spencer Strider was brilliant through six innings, striking out eight and allowing just three hits, and Eddie Rosario hit a two-run homer for Atlanta. But it wasn't enough as the Nationals got to the Braves bullpen to pull out a 3-2 win on Opening Day.

Nursing a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth, A.J. Minter struck out the first two batters he faced. But after a walk to Joey Meneses and bloop single by Alex Call, Corey Dickerson ripped a two-run double to give the Nats the lead and eventually the win.

Tough way to lose on Opening Day, but man that game was fun. If anybody finds the game a bit easy, give Competitive a shot. Going back to my deleted franchise, I was 8-0 on Simulation and now 0-3 on Competitive - both on default HOF.

So since I have no self control I started a Padres Franchise.

Pads win Season opener over Rockies 2-0.

Jake Cronenworth's RBI double along with Xander Bogaerts sacrifice fly were enough as the Padres squeak by the visiting Rockies 2-0 to open the 2023 season. Yu Darvish struck out 13 in 7 innings of work and Josh Hader worked a scoreless 9th inning to get his first save of the season. German Marquez pitched well for Colorado in his 6 innings of work. Marquez struck out 5 and walked 2 while giving up 2 earned runs

              W-Y.Darvish (1-0)
              L-G.Marquez (0-1)
              S-J.Hader (1)

                2023 Washington Nationals

Luis Garcia returned to the squad prior to the series getting started, and to make room for him the Nationals made the tough decision to send Cade Cavalli to AAA. They want to keep him as a starter and feel the best way to further develop his skill set is to allow him to take the mound every fifth day.

Game One: Andrew Heaney (3-10, 4.61) vs Zach Davies (7-8, 3.68)
New York went on the attack right away: Luis Guillorme led off the game with a single and Jose Peraza followed with a home run on just the third pitch of the game. The Mets would load the bases with two outs but Davies worked out of trouble. The Nationals answered in a similar fashion, Kike Hernandez would hit a one out solo home run on just the third pitch of the game from Andrew Heaney. Brady House, whose bat has really come alive lately, hit a solo home run in the third to tie the game. House has hit five doubles in the last four games and is showing signs of really heating up. Brandon Nimmo gave the Nationals the lead in the fourth when he hit a double to drive in Anderson Tejeda, who singled earlier in the inning. Tyler Stephenson would tie the game when he hit a solo home run on Davies’ first pitch of the sixth inning. Both starters left the game after the sixth, and neither would factor in the decision. Colin Poche would pitch a flawless seventh for the Nationals, who would then take the lead in the bottom half as Lane Thomas singled and Brandon Nimmo followed up with a home run off of Hansel Robles. Aaron Bummer and Trevor Rosenthal would pitch the eighth and ninth without any issues, although Andrew Vaughn suffered a blistered finger diving for a ball at first in the ninth and will miss a few days.

Game Two: Joey Lucchesi (7-8, 4.13) vs Lucas Giolito (7-9, 3.74)
Jeff McNeil started the scoring in the fourth with a solo home run, the first hard hit ball for either team until this point. The Nationals evened the score in the fifth as Lane Thomas hit a lead off triple and scored on a double from Victor Robles. The Mets answered right back with a lead off home run from Christian Pache to start the sixth. The scoring didn’t stop there; Luis Guillorme singled but was forced out on a fielders choice from Jose Peraza. Jeff McNeil singled and Pete Alonso hooked a home run down the left field line that hit off the top of the foul pole to make it a 5-1 game. The Nationals were able to rally in the bottom of the sixth with and RBI double from Brandon Nimmo and RBI single from Lane Thomas. They would continue their rally in the seventh, as Deolis Guerra would come out of the bullpen and give up a bloop single to Victor Robles, a broken bat infield single to Brady House and a game-tying double to Luis Garcia. The Mets would quickly pull Guerra from the game and send in Hansel Robles to end the inning. Then, in the eighth the Mets would bring in Joely Rodriguez, who would give up singles to Brandon Nimmo and Lane Thomas before striking out Keibert Ruiz. But the next batter was Victor Robles, who would continue his perfect game with a single to score Nimmo and give the Nationals the late lead. Trevor Rosenthal would enter in the ninth and strikeout Stephenson and Perez before getting a fly out from Eduardo Escobar to end the game.

The Nationals played great ball in a quick two game sweep of the Mets. They are now 52-58 and just three games out of a wild card spot. Washington will now travel to Miami for four games.

                  June 29 - July 2: COLORADO SPRINGS (38-48) @ FLAGSTAFF (58-26)
                  Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 9,577)

                  June 29: Hops 4, Snow Sox 3
                  June 30: Snow Sox 5, Hops 1
                  July 1: Snow Sox 9, Hops 8
                  July 2: Snow Sox 3, Hops 2

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Colorado Springs Snow Sox have had a rough start to the 2023 season, but they came into Flagstaff and took three of four to open the month of July. The series featured three one run games and the three consecutive losses is one away from the Hops longest losing streak of 2023.

The beat goes on for the Hops as they opened up a nine-game home stand with a walk-off win over the Colorado Springs Snow Sox by a score of 4-3. John Benitez lead off the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run to center, his 11th on the year, as Flagstaff continues it’s magical run through the 2023 season.

Robbie Westbrook continued his torrid pace as of late, with a three run home run in the first to put the Hops up 3-0. That looked almost insurmountable with Shoe-Lace O’Tying on the mound. He was on top of his game early on, striking out six straight at one point.

But the Snow Sox would get to him in the third in a steady rain. Todd Austin hit a three-run home run to right to tie the game at 3-3. The game would then go into a lengthy rain delay that lasted almost 90 minutes and spelled the end of each starter.

The bullpens would keep this one tied until Benitez untied it and won it in the bottom of the ninth.

Angelo Chacin (3-1) picked up the win, tossing the final 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit. Shoe-Lace O’Tying gave up the three runs on three hits in 3.1 innings of work. He struck out seven and walked two. Sam Wirth pitched three innings and did not give up a run.

Jeff Cabrera, one of the best closers in the league with an ERA of 0.89 coming into today’s game and a perfect 16 for 16 in save opportunities, took the loss.

On Friday evening, the Snow Sox ended a four game losing streak as they pulled away late for a 5-1 victory to even the four game weekend series. Humberto Aguilar pitched seven plus strong innings, allowing just one run on two hits to earn the victory.

Flagstaff would take the lead 1-0 in the second inning on a Josh Ortega solo home run, his 22nd on the season. That would be the only hit that the Hops would get until the eighth inning.

Colorado Springs would tie the game in the fourth as Todd Austin hit a long solo home run to right off of Ryan Pressley. They would take the lead in the seventh after a two-out Juan Primo double chased starter Ryan Pressley. Jamie Case then singled home Primo with a line drive to left off of Aldo Osuna to put the Snow Sox ahead 2-1.

In the eighth, the Snow Sox would load the bases off of Pedro Macias and Damian Robertson cleared them with a huge two-out, three-run double to put this one away at 5-1.

Flagstaff would finally get something going in the bottom of the eighth as they loaded the bases with none out, but two infield pop outs and a ground out from Josh Ortega ended any threat.

Jeff Cabrera would work the ninth to pick up his 17th save. He was called in to get the final two outs after the Hops had runners on the corners.

Ryan Pressley (9-5) took the loss, but was excellent. He pitched 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out nine and walking just one.

On Saturday afternoon, the Snow Sox rallied late to pull out a wild 9-8 win over the Hops. Todd Austin and Damien Robertson each homered twice for Colorado Springs as they hit five home runs in the win.

The Snow Sox took a 2-0 lead in the second. Damien Robertson hit a solo home run deep to left and Shields scored on a Dudeck ground out. But the Hops would get both runs right back on a Choi RBI single and Art Mason sacrifice fly.

Josh Ortega launched a solo home run in the third to put the Hops up 3-2. An Oscar Aleman sacrifice fly in the fifth put the Hops up by two.

A Todd Austin RBI single in the sixth cut the Hops lead to 4-3.

Arturo Mardones hit a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh and the Hops increased their lead to 6-3 and it looked like they may be in control of this one. But the normally reliable bullpen imploded.

Todd Austin homered off of Angelo Chacin to cut the lead to 6-4. Juan Caceras tripled to chase Chacin from the game. Aldo Osuna came on and gave up a game tying two-run home run to Damien Robertson, his second of the game. After a Shields double, Jamie Case blasted a two-run home run to put the Snow Sox up 8-6.

Skyler Lyons would answer in the bottom of the eighth with a two-out, two-run home run to tie the game at 8-8.

That setup Todd Austin to win it with a solo home run off of Oliver Benedict in the top of the ninth. Benedict (1-1) took the loss, but the bullpen was not good in general. Angelo Chacin, Aldo Osuna and Oliver Benedict allowed six runs on seven hits in just 2.1 innings of work in relief of starter Juro Yamaguchi.

Jeff Cabrera picked up his 18th save and remains a perfect 18 for 18 in save opportunities in 2023.

Notes: Colorado Springs Juan Primo left the game in the fifth inning with a hand injury that he suffered sliding into second. It was x-rayed and the results showed a fracture, which will send him to the Injured List. The injury is expected to be a 4-8 week timeframe.

In the finale, the Snow Sox got an eighth inning home run from Pat Shields to take the lead and then held on for a 3-2 victory to win the series. It was Shields first home run of the season and came at a great time for the Snow Sox.

The Snow Sox (38-48) would take a 2-0 lead early on as they scored twice in the second inning on a Jamie Case two-run home run.

The Hops would tie it up in the sixth with two runs of their own. Roberto Geronimo doubled home Robbie Westbrook, and David Benitez singled home Geronimo to tie the game at 2-2.

Sam Herzog (6-7) pitched well, but was maybe left in for one batter too long as he served up the home run to Pat Shields with two outs in the eighth. Herzog allowed the three runs on just five hits, striking out seven in the loss.

The Hops (58-26) will now host Prescott in a short two game series starting tomorrow night at AutoZone Park.

Trade: El Paso has acquired 37-year-old catcher Steve Marquez (85 OVR, A POT) from St. George in exchange for three players: 22-year old starting pitcher Greg White (68 OVR, C POT), 25 -year-old reliever Gabe Mendez (61 OVR, C POT), and 18-year-old right fielder Sidney Russell (48 OVR, C OVR).

Fort Worth has acquired 29-year-old second baseman Robby Flores (87 OVR, A POT) from Roswell in exchange for 22-year old starting pitcher McCade Brown (67 OVR, C POT) and 21-year-old second baseman Eduardo Lerma (62 OVR, A POT).

Around the League: Rio Rancho’s Rollie Flingers tossed eight shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out nine, but got a no decision, as the Owlz walked it off against first place Santa Fe 1-0 thanks to a David Dominguez RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Scottsdale has called up their top prospect and the #8 prospect in the IBL in starting pitcher Howard Hood to replace injured starter Edgar Escobedo.

Laughton Storey doubled home a run in the top of the tenth, as Salt Lake sent Prescott to their fourth straight loss, and moved the Chukars into second place in the DL West.

Former Hop Leandro Lugo suffered a broken shin in Albuquerque’s 6-5 loss to Fort Worth and will likely be out 4-8 weeks.

Long Beach rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the eighth inning to defeat Yuma 6-5, walking it off on a Jack Gonzalez two-run double in the bottom of the ninth. Desert League strikeout leader Matt Campbell (9-4) struck out nine, allowing one earned run in a 4-3 victory for the San Diego Seals over Las Vegas as they pulled into a second place tie in the DL West. Rodney Millar homered (19) and drove in three to help Tucson to a 9-0 win over Scottsdale.

Henderson’s Levi Frost (9-2) tossed a complete game one-hitter, striking out eight, in the Silver Knights 5-0 victory over Amarillo. Geronimo Mendoza’s single with one-out in the top of the ninth broke up the no hit bid. Frost walked one batter.

Salt River rallied from a 7-0 deficit to stun Gilbert 8-7 thanks to Benny McCauley walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth.

Played every game on quick counts. 24-20 with the Angels, on a 5 game losing streak with a few on bad breaks and luck.

                          Standouts

                          Renfroe .302 16HR 38RBIs
                          Trout- .319 9 HR 27 RBIs
                          Stassi- .290 8HR

                          Ohtani- 1.10 era 78ks. Hitting .250 9 HRs

Struggled to hit consistently with double plays killing me. Pitching has been solid but always have an inning that sinks me.

I’m in top 10 in all offensive categories but era is 17th.

Still waiting on Rendon, Trout and Ohtani to go on a hot streak and carry us.

I ran the Angels last year Stassi was my unsung hero. He ended up like .245 but with 28 bombs.

                              New York Mets Franchise

Looks like we made it... Well you know the song. We have made it through 2 weeks of the season so we are full steam ahead. Here are some details about the first two weeks then I will do weekly updates which should come quite often as I work from home and can play a month of games in a week if I truly am motivated

Game Play- Legend w sliders for competitive balance
Control- Did NOT use 30 team control. Just saving after each game and if a terrible trade is made I can roll the trade back, Also using S&B trade slider leave it on 2 until month of trade deadline.
Rosters- Used the latest but minor changes. Gave Mets Sasaki in place of Senga, Mindrick to A's in place of Fujinami and Murakami to Padres in place of Tatis Jr

TEAM OUTLOOK- 95 to 105 Wins World Series or Bust
FUTURE OUTLOOK- Have my work cut out for me after season 1. I have budgets on and I am already 43 million in the red to start the season need to let some people walk and season end

                              Roster On Open Day Was
SP- Verlander, Scherzer, Sasaki, Quintana, Carrasco
RP- Curtiss, Hunter, Smith, Ottavino, Santana, Robertson, Raley, Diaz
                              C- Navarez, Nido
IF- Alonso, McNeil, Escobar, Guillorme, Lindor, Vogelbach
OF- Pham, Locastro, Canha, Nimmo, Marte

Quick recaps for the two weeks to the post does not last forever.

                              4 at Miami

1- Verlander and Alcantara dueled it out big time. Verlander went 7 strong allowing only 1 hit. Issue was that 1 hit was a solos HR by Jazz Chisholm and Alcantara shut us down. FINAL- MARLINS 2, METS 0

2- Mets strike often and early. Nido his a 3 run HR and the Mets batter Marlins pitching scoring 9 runs on 14 hits and get a strong start from Scherzer. FINAL- METS 9, MARLINS 2

3- Marlins score 2 early off Sasaki for a 2-0 lead. Mets could not figure out Bratxon Garrett who went 6 strong, Marlins bullpen holds. FINAL- MARLINS 2, METS 1

4- Both teams score lots of runs early and after 4 innings the game is tied 5-5. Francisco Lindor would save the day hitting his second home run in the top of the 7th and the Mets would get the series split. FINAL- METS 6, MARLINS 5

                              3 at Milwaukee

1- Carlos Carrasco throws 7 innings of shutout baseball. Tomas Nido hits his second HR of the season and the Mets blank the Brewers FINAL- METS 3, BREWERS 0

2- Brewers battered Verlander around early and took a 4-1 lead. The Mets bats would rally however off the Brewers pen scoring 4 runs in the 8th and 9th for the comeback win. FINAL- METS 8, BREWERS 5

3- Pete Alonso hit his first home run of the season but that was all the Mets did as Corbin Burnes was fantastic keeping the Mets off balance. Brewers pen rebounded as well and the Brewers took game 3. FINAL- BREWERS 3, METS 1

                              3 vs Miami

1- Neither starting pitcher was really good but the Mets would get a big clutch 2 run home run from Pete Alonso in the 8th inning and Diaz would come on and shut the door and game 1 to the Mets. FINAL METS 5, MARLINS 4

2- Mets torched Luzardo scoring 7 runs in the first 3 innings and chasing him from the game. Pete Alonso would hit a HR for a third game in a row. The Marlins would try and fight back and did make it close but the Mets held on. FINAL METS 8, MARLINS 5

3- Alonso made it 4 straight games with a HR, Carrasco rode his streak of scoreless innings to start the season to 15 and the Mets blank the Marlins and complete the sweep. FINAL- METS 6, MARLINS 0

Edguardo Escobar went down with an injury and will miss two weeks. I thought long and hard before deciding to bring up Baty. Knew if I brought him up he was staying up. So Baty gets the call and likely once Escobar gets off the DL we will look to move or waive him.

                              3 vs San Diego

1- The Baty debut was successful as he went 2 for 3 including a 3 run homer and the Mets came out on fire and blasted the Padres to remain hot. FINAL METS 9, PADRES 3

2- Mets would score 4 early off Yu Darvish on RBI doubles by Nimmo and Lindor. Scherzer was not great had some control issues but was good enough to push the Mets win streak to 5 games. FINAL METS 5, PADRES 2

3- Mets winning streak would come to an end as Blake Snell would limit them to 2 runs on 3 hits. Big RBI Double in the 7th from Murakami and the Padres would stop the Mets winning ways. FINAL- PADRES 3, METS 2

                              3 at Oakland

1-Mets were down 1 going into the 9th but after Zach Jackson walked the bases loaded with two outs Starling Marte hit a huge bases clearing double and the Mets escaped with the win. FINAL METS 6, A'S 4

2- Tomas Nido who thinks he is Babe Ruth hit two home runs now has 4 on the season. Carrasco scoreless streak ended when he gave up a run in the 7th but he was still super strong and the Mets take game 2. FINAL- METS 8, A'S 2

3- Final game was a wild one. Mets down 4-3 in the 9th get a 2 out RBI single from Brett Baty to tie the game at 4 and send it to extra. The Mets then take the lead in the top of the 11th on Tomas Nido 5th home run of the year. However in the bottom of the 11th with 2 out and nobody on. Diaz walks a batter, Gives up a single. and then Ramon Laureano his a 3 run walk off home run and the A's win. FINAL- A'S 7, METS 5

Next up the Mets (11-5) have 3 in LA against the Dodgers (12-4), and then 4 in San Francisco (6-9)

                                Hey all,
Love the franchise updates and it has motivated me to do my first franchise post. I’m a lifelong Mariners fan and so excited to use them this year (things are looking up!). I ended the month of April at 14-12 and 3rd place in the AL west behind the angels and rangers surprisingly. Julio had a monster April, slashing .345 with 7 HR and a league leading 25 RBI’s! The very first game of May I was playing a user controlled game, Julio continues to rake with a HR and 3 batted in. In the 8th he gets on with a line drive single. I proceed to steal 2nd, and he is injured on the steal attempt. Dr.’s say it’s his knee. After the game I check the injury report and he is now down for the year with a torn ACL. This is a massive blow for my team and I briefly thought about restarting my season. I decide to soldier on and over the next two weeks the string of bad injury luck continues. Kolten Wong has a fractured shin and is out for 2-3 months. The very next week Ty France goes down for 2-3 months with a broken forearm after being hit by a pitch. Luis Castillo has a back injury and will miss 1-2 weeks. I have never had injury luck this bad. The wheels have fallen off the wagon and I am now sitting mid-May at 18-19 and still in 3rd place in the division. At this point I am considering selling some of my veterans to try to shed payroll and stock up on prospects.
