RHP's Miles Mikolas and Ryan Helsley were selected to participate in the 93rd MLB All-Star Game at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
Miles Mikolas is 11-4 thus far this season with an ERA just under 2.50. Mikolas not only earned the selection, but he has been tabbed as the starting pitcher for the National League. Mikolas started off the year with a 9-0 record, but has just one win in his last 5 decisions, primarily due to lack of run support.
Ryan Helsley has converted 25 of 27 saves opportunities this year and ranks 5th in the National League in total saves. Helsley is also averaging nearly 1.5 k's per inning, and his WHIP is a shade over 0.60.
Congratulations to both as they will represent the Cardinals organization well in Seattle.
The Cardinals (45-45) will head to the All Star Break with a .500 record and trailing the Cubs by 3 games in the NL Central. The Cardinals endured an 11 game losing streak from the end of June to the first part of July before finally snapping it against the White Sox.
Thankfully no one in the NL Central is playing lights out baseball so the Cardinals are just 3 games back of the Cubs, who they will play 7 times in the next 2 weeks after the break.
Trade season is upon us as well. The Cardinals have targets in mind, but will have to assess the market to see if any of these trades are possible without completely selling off the future. The biggest needs are for someone to lock down 3rd base with Nolan Arenado out for the year and reliable pitching, something the Cardinals have been chasing this entire first half of the year. The 3rd base issue could be resolved with the acquisition of Edmundo Sosa once Branden Donovan returns from the IL in August. Currently Jordan Walker is holding that spot down, but the front office thinks he's one year too early to be relied upon as a contributor to a team that is looking to make a playoff run.
The next few weeks should be interesting, as the trade market has already heated up with a few trades taking place before the break.
