Washington Nationals (80-76) vs Philadelphia Phillies (76-80)
Game One: MacKenzie Gore (10-11, 3.60) vs Ranger Suarez (5-13, 3.37)
Suarez would only go 3.1 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits, two of them solo home runs from Brandon Nimmo. Gleyber Torres and Victor Robles also drove in a run each with base hits. The Phillies got a run in the fourth from Amed Rosario, who hit a solo home run; and then another run in the sixth on a Bryce Harper double. Jean Segura hit a solo home run off of Trevor Rosenthal in the ninth, but Washington held on to win game one 4-3.
Game Two: Josiah Gray (9-14, 3.32) vs Noah Syndergaard (10-12, 3.49)
Both offenses threatened early, but neither could capitalize until the fifth, when Yadiel Hernandez hit a two out single to score CJ Abrams. The Nationals added two more in the sixth, one on a weak fly ball from Drew Mendoza and the other following a throwing error by Anthony DeSclafani. Washington would blow the game wide open with four runs in the seventh; CJ Abrams, Brady House and Luis Garcia would hit consecutive base hits for one run and Gleyber Torres would then hit a three run home run to really put the game out of reach. Washington would go on to cruise to the 7-0 victory.
With the win, the Nationals are guaranteed to finish at worst .500, a major improvement over 2022.
With the loss, the Phillies have been eliminated from the Wild Card race.Andrew Vaughn has been activated from the IL, but will need an additional few days before he is ready to go. The club has sent down Donovan Casey to make room for Vaughn. Joey Meneses has been reevaluated and the earliest he could return would be in one month, which in reality means he is done even if the Nationals go far in the playoffs.
Game Three: Zach Davies (12-10) vs Zach Wheeler
The Phillies took a 3-0 lead after JT Realmuto homered in the second, Amed Rosario drove in a run on a base hit, and Alec Bohm hit a sac fly. Lane Thomas would drive in Washington’s first run with a base hit in the sixth, but that would be the only run they could muster and Philly salvages the series in the finale.
The Nationals (82-77) will enter their final series of the year, a three game set at home against the Miami Marlins (79-80). The Marlins will enter the series 3 games behind Washington for the second Wild Card spot, and are the only team that can bump Washington out as San Diego was eliminated during Washington’s off day.
The Brewers have tied the Cardinals for the NL Central crown, and may have the better chance of clinching the division as they are facing the Pirates, whereas the Cardinals are playing the Cubs, who have been playing well as of late. The runner-up in the NL Central will still be the first Wild Card team.
In the American League, the Chicago White Sox have clinched the first Wild Card position, and the Blue Jays hold on to the second spot, one game ahead of the Rangers and Yankees. The Yankees and Rangers are closing the year against one another, making for a thrilling finish for both clubs. The Tigers and Twins are two games back, but the Twins are closing out the year in LA against the Dodgers and the Tigers are in Chicago to face the White Sox.
