Cardinals force Game 7

The Cardinals and Astros will play a Game 7 in the 2024 World Series. The Cardinals forced the deciding game after beating Houston 2-0 in Game 6. The Astros have played 3 games in St.Louis in the World Series and have yet to score a run.

The Cardinals got started in the 2nd inning when Willson Contreras hit a RBI double to left center driving home Jordan Walker. The only other run came in the 8th, when Harrison Bader singled home Leonardo Rivas who doubled to start off the inning.

Jack Flaherty was brilliant yet again. He went 7 innings allowing zero runs on 3 hits and struck out 9. Genesis Cabrera pitched a perfect 8th and Ryan Helsley closed out the 9th, although he allowed the tying run to the plate after Yordan Alvarez doubled with 2 outs. But Jose Altuve hit a lazy fly ball to left that Tyler O'Neill caught to end the game.

The Cardinals will give the ball to Jordan Montgomery while the Astros will start Luis Garcia.

Astros win their 3rd World Series Championship defeat Cardinals in Game 7

The Astros are the 2024 World Series Champions. They beat the Cardinals 2-0 in Game 7 at Busch Stadium to clinch their 3rd World Series title and 2nd in the past 3 seasons.

The game was scoreless thru the first 3- innings with neither team really threatening to do anything. In the Top of the 4th, the Astros put up two runs after Brendan Donovan botched a sure fire double play with no outs and men on first and second. Instead of two outs and a man on 3rd, the bases were then loaded. Miles Mikolas would replace Jordan Montgomery and strike out Jose Altuve, but Jeremy Pena would single just over Nolan Arenado's head and push two runs across to make it 2-0. After that, nothing else happened.

The Cardinals bullpen kept the Astros at bay, but the bats couldn't come up with the big hit. In the bottom of the 9th the Cardinals had two on with nobody out, but failed to drive in a single run. Nolan Arendo flew out to right field, Tyler O'Neill lined out to Altuve and Jordan Walker struck out to end the game.

This stings as the Cardinals were up 2-0 in the series, but lost 4 of 5 games to lose the chance to claim their 12th World Series championship in franchise history.

On to the offseason in hopes of getting back here in 2025.

Thank you both. I appreciate you both following along.

It definitely sucks, especially getting to Game 7. But I also think we got there without Paul DeJong, Tommy Edman, and Dylan Carlson. We didn't have Goldschmidt until the World Series, where he just stunk. He was 2 for 28 for the series. He is a free agent so we have a decision to make as Jordan Walker serverd admirably in his absence as did Alec Burleson.

A lot to ponder this offseason as we had young guys step up (Leonardo Rivas at SS)

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Hops took two of three from Santa Fe to finish the home stand at .500.

In the opener, the Hops would walk it off with the most unlikely candidate providing the heroics as Isaac Nettles hit a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to help the Hops to an improbable 4-3 victory.

The Hops would take a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Josh Ortega and an RBI single from Oscar Aleman.

The Silver Bullets would chip away at that lead with an RBI double from Jamaal Crosby in the fourth.

Shoe-Lace O’Tying was cruising in this one, but ran into trouble in the seventh. Dezi Azerod hit a solo home run to open the innings and tie the game at 2-2. Emerson King would then come through with a huge two-out RBI double to give Santa Fe the lead.

It looked like the Silver Bullets would hold on, but a two-out pinch hit single from Roberto Geronimo kept the inning alive. That setup Isaac Nettles to be the hero and he did it. He lined a 2-2 fastball over the wall in left to walk it off. It was just his second home run on the season, but it gave Flagstaff the win.

Shoe-Lace O’Tying pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on ten hits. He struck out ten and walked one. Pedro Macias got four outs and Oliver Benedict pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his third win.

Pat Mehnutzak pitched six solid innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out four. Closer Lincoln Graham (0-6) blew his sixth save and suffered his sixth loss on the season.

On Tuesday evening the Hops won a pitcher’s duel 3-2. Ryan Pressley outdueled Ron Sposato to help the Hops to their first series win in almost two months.

Robbie Westbrook was the story offensively for the Hops. He hit solo home run sin the first and third innings to spot the Hops to a 2-0 lead. He now has 31 on the season.

In the fourth, the Silver Bullets would tie it up as Jamaal Crosby blasted a two-run home run off of Ryan Pressley to tie the game at 2-2. But the Hops would get that run, and the lead, back in their next at bat as a David Benitez sacrifice fly put the Hops back out in front 3-2.

The Hops would turn it over to their bullpen in the seventh. Aldo Osuna, Pedro Macias and Vic Miller each tossed a scoreless inning with Miller picking up his league leading 38th save. Ryan Pressley (13-7) picked up the win. He was pretty good, allowing two runs on four hits in six innings of work with five strikeouts and two walks.

Ron Sposato (14-7) took the loss, throwing six innings and allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts.

In Wednesday afternoon’s finale, the Silver Bullets hit five home runs as they powered their way to an 11-6 victory to avoid the sweep. Corey Barton homered twice for Santa Fe to help lead the way.

Santa Fe would score runs in the first six innings and in eight of nine innings. Emerson King and Corey Barton hit back-to-back shots in the first to get the Silver Bullets started. Josh Ortega answered in the bottom half with a two-run shot of his own to tie the game. It was his league leading 36th on the season.

A Donovan Pressley two-out RBI double in the second would put Santa Fe ahead to stay. Pressley would add an RBI single in the fourth and RBI single in the sixth. Emerson kings went 2 for 5 with a double, home run and three RBIs, plus he made a couple of spectacular plays in the field, limiting Flagstaff’s scoring chances.

David Benitez hit his 13th home run on the season in the ninth for the Hops.

Juro Yamaguchi (9-8) took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits in five innings of work. Sam Varela was torched for three runs on four hits, while recording only two outs in the sixth. Angelo Chacin finished the game out and pitched well until he gave up back-to-back home runs in the ninth.

The Hops (74-54) will have tomorrow off and then hit the road for a trip to Texas to take on West Texas (63-66) and Amarillo (53-75) to end the month of August.

Around the League: Chandler’s Cory Law came through again late for the Chiefs as he hit a bases clearing double in the bottom of the eighth on Monday evening as the Chiefs rallied to defeat Amarillo 4-1. Garrett Matthews hit a sixth inning grand slam to power Mesa to a 5-2 win over Yuma.

Rio Rancho hit five home runs and knocked out 17 hits in a 13-2 clobbering of San Antonio in a series with big Wild Card implications. Bill Olsen hit two of those home runs and drove in four for the Owlz who now sit just one game out of an ML Wild Card position.

Fort Worth’s Gabriel Carmona suffered a shoulder tear in the first inning of his start against El Paso and may possibly miss the rest of the regular season. The Kings currently sit one game out of an ML Wild Card position, but will be without their ace down the stretch. Carmona was (9-9, 3.97 ERA) in 147.1 innings.

Las Vegas’ Stanley Taguchi (14-6) tossed eight shutout innings, scattering eight hits and striking out five in the Nuggets 6-1 victory over West Texas.

Gilbert’s Josh Heupel hit two home runs and drove in six as the Barnstormers defeated Salt River 12-4. Heupel is now hitting .320 with 41 home runs and 94 RBIs and is the frontrunner for Desert League MVP. Mesa’s Richard Logan (12-9) tossed a complete game shutout, allowing eight hits and striking out 11, as the Solar Sox defeated Yuma 1-0.

Pablo Felix hit a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 13th as Fort Worth defeated El Paso 4-3 to win their sixth straight game. Danny Watson went 3 for 3 with a home run and drove in seven as Roswell defeated Albuquerque 9-3.

Josh Heupel would homer again on Tuesday evening, driving in three, as Gilbert once again roughed up Salt River 11-4. Odell Hansen homered twice and drove in four as Austin got past San Diego 9-7. The Fire Frogs still hold a narrow lead over Fort Worth in the ML East.

Mike Rock and Miguel Gonzalez each hit two-run home runs in a seven run first inning as Colorado Springs defeated Phoenix 8-4. The Snow Sox are (12-5) in their last 17 games as they make a late push for the postseason.

Mannnn I was really hoping you would pull it off CB! It seems like the Astros are just as pesky in the game as they are in real life (I'm not over the scandal...sorry). Hope you can make another run next season!

With the sweep, the Tigers increased their lead in the A.L. Central to 27 games over the Twins. The Tiger's magic number to clinch the division is 9. The Tigers have clinched a post season berth.

The Blue Jays lead the A.L. East by 8.5 games over the Yankees. The Astros lead the A.L. West by just a game over the Angels, and 4 games over the Rangers. The Twins and Yankees are currently in the top 2 Wild card positions. The Rays and Angels are tied for the final Wild Card spot, with the Rangers just 3 games back.

In the National League, the Braves lead the East by 8.5 games over the Mets. The Brewers lead the Central by 3 games over the Pirates. The Dodgers lead the West by 10.5 games over the Padres. The Pirates, Mets, and Cardinals hold the Wild Card spots, with the Padres just 2 games back, and the Giants 5.5 games back.

Love following your threads. Man that's got to be disappointing. I know your love for the Cardinals runs as deep as mine for the Rangers. I've been playing since 2006 on MOM and have yet to even go to a World Series, much less win one. God luck in the offseason

Cardinals re-sign Paul Goldschmidt to one year deal

The Cardinals have re-signed 1B Paul Goldschmidt to a one year deal worth $12M.

The 37 year old slashed .286/.347/.454 last year with 16 homeruns and 77 RBIs. Goldschmidt missed about 6 weeks including the wildcard series, divisional series, and NLCS last year due to a broken hand. He returned in the World Series where he was just 2 for 29.

There was speculation that maybe the Cardinals would move on given his performance in the World Series and the fact that Jordan Walker and Alec Burleson stepped up admirably in his absence, but the organization considered the entire season and with a single year deal for $12M, not too much invested in case his World Series performance is the norm going forward.

To close out the month of April, the Cardinals finish up a 10 game west-coast trip with a three game series against the Dodgers.

The Cardinals are 15-11 on the year, 1 GB of the Brewers in the division.

The team is hitting its stride, having won 5 straight on this road trip, highlighted by a four game sweep against the Giants.

The offense has been a strength, and has started to click up and down the lineup.

Rookie sensation Jordan Walker is tied for a team-high 8 HR, while batting .279 with 14 RBI, playing primarily RF.

The lineup is paced by Brendan Donovan (.353 BA, .831 OPS) and Dylan Carlson (.306 BA, .833 OPS) hitting 1-2 in front of Goldschmidt and Arenado, who are doing plenty of damage on their own.

Injuries to Adam Wainwright and Jack Flaherty have put stress on the starting rotation. Flaherty just returned from a finger injury that kept him out for three starts back in early April, while Wainwright has yet to make his debut this season from a hamstring injury suffered in Spring Training.

One bright spot has been Dakota Hudson, who was called up when Flaherty went down. In three starts, Hudson is 3-0 posting a 1.04 ERA and has earned an opportunity to remain in the rotation while SP Jake Woodford was optioned to Triple-A when Flaherty returned for the finale in SF.

Game 1 in Los Angeles features Miles Mikolas (3-1, 4.66 ERA) against Dustin May (1-2, 6.75 ERA)

Is anyone else having an issue with everyday players needing every 3-5 games off? DH'ing them adds more energy back, but I have guys needing way too many days off

2023 Washington Nationals

Washington Nationals (79-73) vs New York Mets (69-83)

Game One: Josiah Gray (9-13, 3.25) vs Joey Lucchesi (8-10, 3.76)
Josiah Gray gave up a two run home run to Fransisco Lindor in the first, and struggled with his command for the first three innings. He then struck out five in a row, and a total of eight, before leaving the game after just four and a third innings due to a high pitch count. The Nationals would make it a 2-1 game when Wilmer Perez singled to score Anderson Tejeda. The Mets would add an insurance run when Tyler Stephenson singled, and the Mets’ bullpen would prevent any rallies from Washington and take a 3-1 victory. The Nationals had chances in the late innings, but could not get a hit when it mattered most.

Brady House strained a lat muscle making a nice play at short and is day to day.

Jackson Rutledge has come off the IL and will take the long man spot from Gerardo Carrillo. Carrillo has been sent back to AAA.

Game Two: Zach Davies (12-9, 3.60) vs Tylor Megill (16-8, 3.20)
The Mets seemed to have stolen the Nationals playbook, as they scored four runs in the first, all on base hits. This has been how the Nationals have played all season long, and one can’t help but wonder if the tables are starting to turn at the most inopportune time for them. First baseman Drew Mendoza missed two balls that were scored as base hits but probably should have been fielded, and these miscues led to at least two of the Mets first five runs. Zach Davies would be pulled after three innings and Jackson Rutledge was called on in relief, but he gave up a solo home run to Jose Peraza, the second batter he faced. Fransisco Lindor would triple and score Tyler Stephenson to make it 8-0. The Nationals finally drove a run across in the fifth on base hit from Brandon Nimmo, Luis Garcia and Gleyber Torres; but Garcia injured his finger sliding into third. It appears to have just been jammed, so he will not miss any time (In reality, I had to save the game and come back to it later, and I think there was a glitch as he was uninjured upon completing the game). The Nationals ended up losing the game 12-3, and Drew Mendoza would go 3-4 and get his first career RBI, but also miss four balls at first, none of which were recorded as errors.

Game Three: Lucas Giolito (12-10, 3.73) vs Max Scherzer (6-15, 5.01)
The Nationals once again jumped all over Scherzer, driving in four runs in three and a third innings. The major blow was a three run home run from Luis Garcia, who would end up going 4-5 on the day. Gleyber Torres hit a two run home run later on in the game and CJ Abrams added an RBI of his own, as the Nationals cruised to a 6-1 victory. Lucas Giolito pitched a complete game on 90 pitches, striking out six and walking two.

Game Four: Stephen Strasburg (12-8, 2.24) vs David Peterson (8-8, 2.69)
Rougned Odor hit his second home run of the season, both off the Nationals, to put the Mets up 2-0. Odor was one of the September call ups for New York, and has shown he still has something to prove at the major league level. Casey Golden would drive in a run to make it 3-0, but Brady House would hit a two run double to close the gap. The Nationals had a great opportunity to take the lead in the sixth, with men on second and third and no outs, but two weak pop flys and a strikeout eliminated the threat. New York scored again in the bottom of the sixth when Casey Golden once again singled to drive in a run. Washington again got a run back in the seventh when Gleyber Torres grounded out to score Victor Robles, but the Mets held on to win the game and the series.

The Nationals fall to 80-76 on the year, but are still 1.5 games ahead of Miami for the second wild card spot. The Padres are now 3 games back, having won three in a row. The Nationals next opponent, the Phillies, have lost three in a row and are now 4 games back, as are the resurgent Cubs.

In other news, the Toronto Blue Jays have gotten and have entered the AL Wild Card race. The two AL Wild Card teams as of September 24 are the White Sox and Blue Jays, but the Tigers and Yankees are each one game back, the Rangers are 1.5 games back, and the Twins are three games behind Toronto for a playoff spot.

In the National League, the Cardinals and Brewers continue to battle for the NL Central, with St. Louis now leading Milwaukee by just one game. The Cardinals will finish the year at home with three games against the Mets and three games against the Cubs; while the Brewers will also be at home for three games against the Cubs followed by a trip to Pittsburgh for three against the Pirates.
