Redbird Report - Meaningful September Baseball

The Cardinals (80-56) have reached the month of September with an 8 game lead over the Cubs in the NL Central Division. The two teams finished off their meetings for the regular season with the Cardinals taking 2 games of a 3 game series in Wrigley.

The Cardinals didn't play the best in August, as they watched a division lead of 12 games get down to 7 games before the two teams met to close out the month. Brendan Donovan, Miles Mikolas, and Dakota Hudson have hit a wall as all 3 just had poor months adding very little assistance to the team's quest for a divisional championship.

With September callups the Cardinals have recalled Magnerius Sierra and Genesis Cabrera. Sierra was in Single A ball awaiting the call up after being sent down when activated from an ankle injury. Cabrera was recalled from Memphis where he spent the final two weeks of August, due to poor performance.

The Cardinals will look to maintain the 8 game lead and hope to not fall into a losing streak that allows the Cubs to make things very interesting before the month ends.

Paul Goldschmidt to IL with broken hand

Paul Goldschmidt has been placed on the 10 Day IL with a broken hand. Goldschmidt suffered the injury in the series opener with the Padres in September after being hit by a fastball while at the plate. Its unlikely that Goldschmidt returns for the regular season and he could very well miss the playoffs, especially the start. Goldschmidt was having a great year after being injured in the latter part of the 2023 season with a shoulder injury. Goldy is in the final year of his contract and will be a free agent this winter.
I can't shave with my eyes closed, meaning each day I have to look at myself in the mirror and respect who I see.

I miss the old days of Operation Sports :(

Re: MLB The Show 23 Franchise Mode Discussion

The red hot Mets went in to St Louis and were able to sweep a four game series, unfortunately this came at a price as they lost Starling Marte for what looks to be the remainder of the season with a broken ankle. Jeff McNeil will move to RF while Eduardo Escobar gets the majority of playing time at second base.

From there they went to Atlanta where just like in real life, things did not go well. They split the first two games and brought the third game to the tenth inning thanks to a questionable squeeze attempt by Atlanta with two outs. We were able to score two in the tenth so I was feeling pretty confident, then an Acuna hit and an Ozuna HR later and the ball game is over. We finished the season 5-8 vs Atlanta, dropping 7 of our last 9 against the Braves. We still hold a half game lead over Atlanta for the first wildcard spot and we e reduced the Phillies division lead to 3.5

        Speaking of Atlanta…

In my 18 Season I finished 15 games ahead of them winning the Division. Atlanta won the WC game so I’m facing them in the NLDS. In typical fashion Braves beat me 3-1 in the series. My pitching was pretty good but my hitters went on vacation early. Braves went on to lose the WS 4-2 to the Mariners.

Unless the Phillies somehow blow the division it’s looking like I’ll be playing the Braves in the wildcard round, we’ll be spending the next thirty games seeing who hosts the series

Any idea what exactly generates revenue during a franchise? At the start of my season it was showing I’d make $341 million but it’s dipped down to $337 million and I had to get three sponsorships just to get it that high. I’m playing.600 ball so it shouldn’t be performance related. I have been in second place most of the season so maybe that caused attendance to be down

This division is ridiculous. I’m 25-14 with the Phillies and I’m in 2nd place with the 4th best record in baseball. Atlanta has the 2nd best record in baseball.

Started a marlins franchise. Had a great game. Down 5-1 Chisholm hit his 2nd homer of the game a two run shot to make it 5-3. Sanchez hits a homer 5-4. Bottom of the 8th 2nd and 3rd one out Sanchez hit his second of the game I win 7-5 all for that and I’m simulating the cpu games and accidentally sim mine I back out and forget I had all save slots full and I gotta restart lol. The most me thing possible. God damnit.

Good question. I’m playing with the Rays and I hope it’s not just based on attendance.

                      2023 Washington Nationals

The Nationals take on the Padres in a pivotal three game series, both teams are tied at 72-71 and looking to get into the second wild card position.

Game One: Zach Davies (10-9, 3.68) vs Yu Darvish (9-5, 3.12)

Lane Thomas grounded into a fielder's choice in the second that would put Washington up first. Jake Cronenworth tied the game with a solo home run in the fifth, but the Nationals answered with a double from Yadiel Hernandez, who advanced to third on a throwing error and scored when Gleyber Torres hit a deep fly ball out to center for a sac fly. That was all for the offense in this one, although the Padres nearly walked it off in the ninth when Aaron Bummer loaded up the bases with two down but was able to lock up the save. Bummer was not available tonight and with Juan Soto batting in the ninth, Dave Martinez wanted a lefty on the mound.

Game Two: Lucas Giolito (11-9, 3.74) vs Nabil Crismatt (4-11, 5.79)

Luis Garcia and Yadiel Hernandez would team up once again to score a run in the first; Garcia doubling and Hernandez driving him in with a single. But the Padres would respond with three in the bottom half, the first five batters would all get base hits, with Manny Machado’s single driving in the first run and Jorge Alfaro’s single scoring the second. Sacrifice flies from Jake Cronenworth and Trent Grisham would put San Diego up 4-1 after one inning. Juan Soto, for the umpteenth time since being traded, homered off his former team in the fifth. Washington would get a run in the seventh on a sac fly from Anderson Tejeda, but Jurickson Profar homered in the bottom half. The Nationals pinch hit for Luis Garcia and Yadiel Hernandez in the eighth, as a way of giving them a little extra time off as Sam Diego went to lefty Drew Pomeranz. Roger Gallegos would fly out, but Donovan Casey would hit a base hit and Lane Thomas followed with a two run home run to make it a 6-4 game. Once again San Diego would respond with the long ball, this time it would be CJ Hinojosa, off of Sean Doolittle. Josh Hader would come in to close it out, despite his heavy usage lately, and the only positive here is that he will be unavailable tomorrow. San Diego takes game two, 7-4.

Game Three: Stephen Strasburg (12-8, 2.25) vs Joe Musgrove (8-9, 2.95)

Stephen Strasburg got off to a rough start, walking Whit Merrifield and Manny Machado to start the home half of the third. He then threw a wild pitch, allowing them to advance to second and third before Juan Soto hit a ground ball to second to score Merrifield. Trent Grisham hit a sac fly for the second out, but Machado was able to beat the throw to the plate. Joe Musgrove kept the Nationals offense at bay, and two of the first three baserunners he allowed were thrown out at second attempting to advance on pitches in the dirt. Stephen Strasburg was rough, striking out four but walking three, but he would go 4.2 innings despite throwing 103 pitches. Strasburg wanted to stay out there and give it his all, and save the bullpen, and he did just that. His determination and veteran leadership seemed to light a fuse in the Nats, who slowly but steadily wore Musgrove out, and would get on the scoreboard in the 8th with a leadoff home run by Anderson Tejeda, which chased Musgrove to the showers. Donovan Casey and CJ Abrams followed with singles before Brandon Nimmo popped out on the first pitch of the at bat, but Luis Garcia came through, tying the game with an RBI single. Colin Poche gave up the lead when Niko Hulsizer, in just his third major league game, singled down the left field line to score Jose Azocar, who was pinch-running for Juan Soto. In a move that shocked everyone, Bob Melvin would turn to the exhausted Josh Hader in the ninth, and the Nationals took advantage, getting a leadoff hit from Andrew Vaughn, who would be replaced at first by Victor Robles. Joey Meneses would pinch hit for Keibert Ruiz and would score Robles from first with a double. Hader would be pulled and Robert Suarez would enter. The Nationals would play for the lead by pinch running Lane Thomas at second, but Suarez shut them down. Kyle Finnegan pitched the ninth and retired the Padres in six pitches. Washington took the lead for the first time in the tenth, with a double from Brandon Nimmo. This would be the game winner, as Trevor Rosenthal would come in and lock down the Padres in the bottom of the tenth.

The Nationals may have just won their biggest series of the year, and the finale was one of their most surprising wins all season. They looked tired and defeated for the first seven innings but came to life when it mattered most and will leave San Diego with a record of 74-72 and sole possession of the second Wild Card spot. Miami and Philadelphia are both a half game back and San Diego is now a full game behind.

The Nationals will fly home to face the Mets (66-80) for three games followed by another huge series against the Phillies (74-73).

The Guardians, Braves and Dodgers have all clinched their respective divisions as of September 13.

                        August 8-9: SCOTTSDALE (61-54) @ FLAGSTAFF (68-47)
                        Stadium: AutoZone Park (Capacity: 9,577)

                        August 8: Scorpions 2, Hops 1
                        August 9: Hops 2, Scorpions 1

Flagstaff, AZ (AP) - The Flagstaff Hops managed to split a short two-game series with the DL Central leading Scottsdale Scorpions to close out their home stand. Both games were tight low scoring affairs that featured great pitching.

In the opener, Mark Griffin homered off of Oliver Benedict in the top of the eighth to send Scottsdale on to a 2-1 victory over Flagstaff.

The Scorpions would grab a 1-0 lead in the third on a Mark Griffin solo home run, his 13th on the year.

The Hops would tie it up in the fourth as Josh Ortega hit his 31st home run on the season, a solo shot.

There would be a ninety minute rain delay in the fifth that spelled the end of both starters. The Scorpions would go ahead in the eighth on Tanner Bell’s solo home run, his eighth.

Pedro Macias would work his way out of bases loaded jam in the top of the ninth to keep the Hops in it. But they could not find another run. Art Mason and Oscar Aleman were each thrown out attempting to steal late in the game.

Oliver Benedict (2-2) took the loss out of the bullpen for Flagstaff. Chris Bennett (5-2) picked up the win for Scottsdale, pitching a scoreless seventh, and Charles Sato picked up his 34th save.

On Wednesday afternoon, Ramon Garcia tossed six shutout innings, allowing just one hit, to earn his first win since his trade to the Hops, in a 2-1 victory for the Hops over the Scorpions.

The Hops would score both of their runs in the fourth inning. Robert Geronimo laced an RBI double to put the Hops up 1-0, and Art Mason lined a single to left, scoring Geronimo to give the Hops a 2-0 lead.

Martin Perez would hit a solo home run in the seventh off of Aldo Osuna for the Scorpions lone run. Oliver Benedict worked a scoreless eighth, despite giving up three hits. Emmitt Hampton threw out Tanner Bell at the plate to end the inning and keep the Hops in front. Vic Miller increased his ML leading save total to 35 with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Flagstaff (68-47) will now hit the road to face last place Goodyear and slumping Santa Fe.

Around the League: Chandler rookie Reynaldo Pulido came through with a huge three-run home run in the tenth as the first-place Chiefs defeated San Diego 9-7 at Petco Park. Red-hot St George was cooled off on Monday evening as they were shutout 13-0 in Colorado Springs. The Snow Sox Ryan Pearson (1-0), making his Snow Sox debut, tossed a complete game three-hitter, walking four and striking out five to help lead Colorado Springs to the easy win.

El Paso remained red-hot as Mark Donnellon won his league leading 15th game in an 8-4 victory over Amarillo. Donnellon pitched seven innings, allowing three runs for the first-place Blue Rocks.

On Tuesday evening Henry Ruiz hit a solo home run in the 14th inning to send Chandler on to a 5-4 victory over San Diego. The Chiefs are now (14-1) in their last 15 and lead the DL East by 3 1/2 games over Gilbert.

Goodyear pounded out 11 extra base hits, including six home runs, in a 10-5 victory over Surprise. Darren McCarty lead the way for the Jack Rabbits, going 3 for 5 with two home runs and three RBIs.

Albuquerque scored four times in the top of the ninth, only to surrender five in the bottom half as Prescott rallied and walked it off in a 7-6 victory. Paul Knapp hit a bases clearing three-run triple to end it and send the Hot Shots onto victory in the battle of last place clubs.

Rollie Flingers tossed eight strong innings, allowing just one hit and striking out eight, but got a no decision in Rio Rancho’s 2-1 victory in ten innings over Salt Lake. The win pushed the Owlz into a tie with Salt lake with both teams at (58-58) and just 2 1/2 games back of West Texas for the second Wild Card position.

I use 30 team control, although to be honest I've been really slacking the past few months and haven't updated my spreadsheet or even checked rosters after the trade deadline. There were no major trades this season, I'm anticipating a busy offseason though.

I just make sure no crazy trades happen. I did change the bullpens around as I believe Armor and Sword recommended, in order for the CPU to use all bullpen arms accurately, but that was just at the beginning of the season and I've since forgotten about it. As far as free agency, coaching changes, call ups and send-downs, that's all decided by the computer.
